Job Summary:         Under the direction of the Office of the Superintendent, perform a variety of specialized duties to support San Mateo County Office of Education’s strategic vision concerning sustainability.

Essential Job Functions:              

• Collect, analyze, and utilize data to strengthen sustainability efforts across schools in San Mateo County and San Mateo County Office of Education
• Support efforts to develop, implement, and provide training on county-wide protocols and templates with district partners to promote sustainable operations, facilities, and programs
• Provide technical support to districts and schools in developing and implementing sustainability plans; Assist in preparing and conducting training sessions and materials
• Work with cross-divisional teams to identify and implement best practices for sustainability at San Mateo County Office of Education
• Communicate and collaborate with school sites and community partners to ensure efficient and effective use of support services
• Monitor and evaluate efforts to promote sustainability across schools in San Mateo County and at San Mateo County Office of Education
• Identify and share best practices in San Mateo County for creating sustainable campuses
• Remain current on applicable laws, codes, regulations, policies, and procedures related to assigned activities

Qualifications:  Any combination of education and experience providing the job knowledge, skills, and ability for successful job performance will be considered for positions in this classification.  Typical qualifications would be equivalent to:

EDUCATION:   Bachelor's degree in Environmental Studies, Social Science, Education, or a related field

EXPERIENCE:   Two (2) years of experience involving sustainability, solid waste management, and/or resource conservation.  Experience working in an educational setting preferred.

LICENSE:         Possession of/or ability to attain a valid California Driver’s License

Specialized Skills and Knowledge:     

• Knowledge of general principles and theories of environmental sustainability and overall knowledge of sustainability topics and issues, in particular zero waste and resource conservation
• Ability to perform a variety of specialized duties involving technical support to school districts and sites in achieving green facilities and operations goals, such as, but not limited to, zero waste and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reductions

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This is the full journey level class in the Laboratory Technician series and is distinguished from the I level by the ability to perform the full range of duties assigned with only occasional instruction or assistance as unusual or unique situations arise.  Positions in this class are flexibly staffed and are normally filled by advancement from the I level.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

• Receives general supervision from the Water Quality Laboratory Supervisor.
• May provide technical supervision over less experienced laboratory staff as assigned.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES - Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Perform a variety of physical, chemical, biological, and bacteriological analyses of wastewater treatment plant samples as well as samples of sludge, drinking water, industrial waste, and other water/wastewater products.
• Set up, calibrate, and operate a variety of laboratory equipment and instruments; perform minor maintenance of laboratory equipment and instruments.
• Recognize problems that may occur in an analytical procedure and troubleshoot known procedures or confer with others to identify possible problems affecting results; recommend changes to procedures, as appropriate.
• Collect various samples for analysis from specific locations according to a predetermined schedule; may collect special samples as conditions warrant; prepare and preserve samples for transport, storage, and laboratory testing.
• Prepare standard chemical solutions, reagents and bacteriological media; keep laboratory facilities clean and in an orderly condition; order supplies and make recommendations regarding equipment purchases.
• Enter laboratory data into a computer system for further analysis and reporting purposes; maintain laboratory records and prepare required reports.
• Wash, clean, and sterilize glassware and other equipment; sterilize bacteriological supplies.
• Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other City employees, and the public using principles of good customer service.
• Perform related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:

• Principles and practices of chemistry, bacteriology and the chemical sciences, including methods and techniques of laboratory testing and analysis.
• Modern laboratory procedures and equipment, including computer uses and applications as applied to laboratory operation and analysis.
• Arithmetic, including proportions, percentages, and decimals.
• Pertinent local, State and Federal laws, ordinances/rules, and department procedures.

Ability to:

• Perform a variety of chemical, biochemical, and bacteriological tests.

• Intermittently, sit while studying or preparing reports or stand at laboratory bench while performing laboratory tests; bend, squat, climb, kneel and twist when performing various field site sampling duties; stand while performing laboratory tests; perform simple and power grasping, pushing, pulling, and fine manipulation; use telephone, computer or communicate through written means; and lift or carry weight of 15 pounds or less.
• Operate laboratory equipment and computer programs related to laboratory data analysis.
• Learn to evaluate outcomes of laboratory results in order to detect errors.

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

Experience:

Two years of increasingly responsible experience performing laboratory analysis duties similar to that of a Laboratory Technician I with the City of Roseville.

Training:

An Associate’s degree or 60 semester units of college level course work including 18 units in a major field of study and 21 units in general education  from an accredited college or university, preferably with major course work in chemistry, bacteriology, biology, or a related field. Two years of related work experience can substitute for an Associate’s Degree.

License or Certificate:

• Possession of a valid California driver’s license by date of appointment.
• Possession of, or ability to obtain within 18 months, a California Water Environment Association Grade 1 Laboratory Analyst certificate.

Job Summary:  Under the direction of the Deputy Superintendent, Business Services or designee, plan, organize, control, and direct the Maintenance, Operations, and Transportation Services of the County Office including the planning, development, design, installation, operation, analysis, maintenance, and repair of facilities; direct County Office transportation operations, routing, scheduling, and activities to assure safe and timely transportation of special education and other designated students to and from school, home and various community locations, and coordinate communications, contractor services and personnel to meet student transportation needs.  Supervise and evaluate the performance of assigned personnel.

• Plan, organize, control, and direct the Maintenance, Operations, and Transportation Services of the County Office
• Manage custodial/maintenance workers at assigned sites; manage reprographics services, pony mail, courier and delivery services, conference facilities, and County Office vehicles
• Plan, organize, and direct County Office transportation operations, scheduling, routing, and activities to assure safe and timely transportation of special education and other designated students to and from school, home and various community locations; monitor, evaluate, and adjust transportation activities in response to student, County Office, and school district needs
• Direct and participate in the development and adjustment of routes and schedules to enhance timeliness and efficiency of transportation activities; oversee the review, verification, and adjustment of schedules in response to school district calendars, address changes, student transfers, school schedule changes, new students, and service requests; assure safety of pick-up and drop-off locations

Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit (SMART) is a new commuter rail system located in Marin and Sonoma Counties. We are seeking two full-time Code Compliance Officers to perform specialized inspections and enforcement of ordinances, regulations and laws governing the transit system. This position is non-sworn and unarmed.

Code Compliance Officers hold limited enforcement authority and are responsible for enforcing ordinances and laws approved by the SMART Board of Directors. Considerable judgment is required in meeting emergency situations, enforcing regulations and in coordination with other personnel and agencies. Ordinances are enforced by the issue of citations and arrests are occasionally necessary. This position is required to prepare incident/arrest reports and other forms either written or using a computer. Code Compliance Officers will be required to testify in court when subpoenaed and may work varied shifts.

In performing their duties, Code Compliance Officers will be called upon to assist and provide information to patrons and the public and ensure the safety of passengers on platforms and in parking lots. This position is classified as a Public Officer under the law with powers of arrest. A primary responsibility is to enforce the fare ordinance by performing unannounced random inspection of fares onboard trains and in paid fare zones. We have ONE immediate Distribution System Operator internship available with the District in the area of Water Distribution. Assignments are for a 40 hour week. Optional work schedules or reduced hours (i.e. part-time) may be considered on a case-by-case basis.  Duration of assignment is for up to six (6) months. Position will operate out of MMWD’s Corte Madera location (Water Distribution).

The Position

Distribution System Operator Intern: (1 position) Under the direct supervision of a certified water distribution operator, learn how to operate and maintain mechanical, electrical and control equipment. Perform inspections of mechanical and electrical equipment.  Assist operators in handling consumer calls.  Assist field personnel with confined space entries.  Learn the basics of a potable water distribution system.  Safety Boots required. Work hours are M-F 6:30 am to 3:00 pm.  This position is for up to a six (6) month duration at the Corte Madera location.
