Distinguishing Characteristics:

The Firefighter is a journey level class within the Fire Department responsible for performing a variety of duties and responsibilities in support of the department’s fire prevention and suppression responsibility.  This classification is distinguished from the next higher classification of Engineer in that the Engineer is responsible for operating and maintaining a variety of fire equipment and apparatus. 

The Engineer is the journey level class responsible for the operation and general maintenance of firefighting apparatus, equipment, vehicles and tools. This classification is distinguished from the next lower classification of Firefighter by the driving of fire apparatus and vehicles and the operation of apparatus, equipment, and tools at an emergency scene; serve as Fire Captain as assigned.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (include but are not limited to the following)

• Perform a variety of fire prevention and fire suppression duties and responsibilities at a fire scene such as responding to alarms, hooking lines to hydrants, laying lines of hose, conducting initial attacks on fires, directing streams of water, carrying and setting up ladders, ventilating buildings, performing search and rescue, administering first aid, sweeping, and cleaning after fires, as well as performing salvage and overhaul.
• Perform medical emergency duties such as performing CPR, giving oxygen, hooking up monitors, and stripping IVs.
• Maintain firefighting equipment which may include washing, polishing and servicing fire apparatus and equipment; test, wash and hang hose.
• Participate in drills and training exercises with engine company employees; attend special training sessions on firefighting and prevention techniques.
• Study and learn City layout and water systems.
• Participate in engine company fire prevention inspections of local businesses and companies. 
• May participate in fire investigations as to the cause and origin.
• Demonstrate a general understanding of applicable policies, procedures and work methods associated with assigned duties.
• Respond to questions and concerns from the general public; provide information as is appropriate and resolve complaints.
• Participate in public education programs in the areas of fire suppression and fire prevention.
• Work Monday-Friday, times to be to determined; be available for calls when off duty at time and a half.
• Extinguish fires and take proper precautions to prevent rekindle thereof.
• Respond, as designated, with their units to all alarms and emergency calls, and perform duties as required.
• Keep the apparatus, equipment, tools and station premises neat, clean and in good order.
• Perform related work as their superior officer may require.
• For expedience in response to alarms they shall acquaint themselves with the streets, topography, physical conditions and other matters affecting response in the Fire Department.
• They shall, under supervision of their superior officers, be responsible for the condition and operation of apparatus to which they are assigned and are held accountable for its readiness for service.
• They shall be continually familiar with practices and procedures relative to water supply, hydrants, fire streams, pump capacities and other operations which will enable them to perform their duties efficiently.
• They shall work as a company unit under the command of their company officer while at fires or other emergencies unless ordered otherwise.
• They shall follow the chain of command in all communications regarding Department business.
• All inquiries from the press shall be referred to the incident commander
• Perform other related duties as required.

Working Conditions:

Position requires sitting, standing, walking on level and slippery surfaces, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, grasping and making repetitive hand movement in the performance of daily duties. The position also requires both near and far vision when inspecting work and operating assigned equipment. The need to lift, carry and push tools, equipment and supplies weighing 25 pounds or more is also required.  Additionally, the incumbent in this outdoor position works in all weather conditions including wet, hot, and cold. The incumbent may work around or in contact with hazardous materials, blood products and other potentially toxic substances.  Incumbent may be subject to physical threats, verbal abuse, or other stressful situations.  During fire suppression activities, incumbent wears self-contained breathing apparatus and enters smoke filled buildings.

License/Certificate:

• Possession of a valid Class ‘C’ California driver's license and no more than 2-points on driving record.

Qualifications:

Education and/or Experience:

Any combination of education and experience that has provided the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary for a Firefighter. A typical way of obtaining the required qualifications is to possess the equivalent of a high school diploma. Equivalent of one years of municipal fire suppression experience (preferred).

License/Certificate:

• Possession of a valid Class ‘C’ California driver's license and no more than 2-points on driving record
• California State Certificate Firefighter I
• California State EMT Certificate and National Registry EMT Card (desired)
• American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certification

ENGINEER

Education and/or Experience:

Any combination of education and experience that has provided the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary for a Firefighter. A typical way of obtaining the required qualifications is to possess the equivalent of a high school diploma. Equivalent of three years of municipal fire suppression experience.

License/Certificate:

• California State Certificate Firefighter I.
• Possession of a valid California Class B driver’s license or Firefighters Class B driver’s license and a satisfactory driving record.
• California State EMT Certificate and National Registry EMT Card.
• American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certification.
• Possession of Associate of Arts/Science degree (desirable).

The City of San Bruno is currently seeking

BUS/VAN DRIVER (Part-Time)

Salary:  $17.45 - $21.22 (per hour)

The Position

The City of San Bruno Community Services Department is seeking a on-call part-time Bus/Van Driver to drive the city's 20-passenger bus/van. As needed, the driver will transport program participants between the San Bruno Senior Center and War Memorial Recreation Center, take participants on day trips, and run errands.

This position will be on-call and will work a variety of shifts to fill-in for regularly scheduled drivers. This position may work up to 30 hours per week, for 2 weeks each month. Schedule will vary depending on the needs of the Department. Prior to appointment, and once appointed into the position, the employee will be included in the random DOT Drug Testing Program and the DMV pull notice program.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must possess a valid California Class B Commercial Driver's License (with a passenger endorsement) and have a good driving record (recent DMV printout required). Applicants should have the ability to read, write, and carry out oral and written directions, maintain cooperative work relationships and assist people with disabilities. Possession of First Aid/CPR Certification is desirable.

PRODUCTION ASSISTANT | CABLE TELEVISION

Paid Internship for someone who wants to do Television Production. Sure, go to the big stations and you will get to sweep, file and answer phones. Work at San Bruno Cable TV Channel 1 and you will operate cameras, set up lights, troubleshoot, edit, program and more! Pay starts at $16/hour.

We are looking for enthusiastic people who ask questions. A flexible schedule is necessary, as we have evening meetings, and we tape programs during the day. Must be available Tuesday evenings for City meetings. The Production Aide may be required to work multiple evenings per month. Availability for productions during the daytime is helpful. Office and prep hours may be scheduled as mutually agreeable. Expect to work up to 15 hours a week. A reliable vehicle to get to locations is a must. 1 year prior experience in video production setting necessary. The Production Aide works directly with government clients and will be expected to take care with his or her appearance. A familiarity with the workings of local government and an interest in government would be very helpful.

The Senior Services division of the City’s Parks, Beaches & Recreation Department currently has a part-time openings for a bus/van driver. This vital position reports to the Supervisor of Senior Services and, while other local trips may be required, is responsible for transporting seniors to and from the Community Center. This position is also responsible for gathering client data as it relates to Aging and Adult Services and assisting the Recreation Coordinator — Senior Services with client needs. This part-time, non-benefitted position works between 25 - 30 hours per week, with a flexible Monday through Friday work schedule. 

Essential Function Requirements

•  Ability to establish rapport with older adults; ability to physically assist with the loading/and unloading of clients in need from vehicle.
• Class B Commercial license with a passenger endorsement or Class C Commerical license with a passenger endorsement; and drive either a bus or a van.
• Must pass medical physical as required for holding a commercial driver’s license.
• Subject to random drug/alcohol testing as required by the Department of Transportation (DOT). Must comply with all DOT rules and regulations.
• Must have the ability to communicate effectively in writing, in person and on the telephone.

Individual will be:

• A defensive driver in anticipating multiple situations that could arise in one’s surroundings.
• Able to deal with confidential situations confidential.
• Able to work successful and professionally in crisis mode during client emergency at the Community Center or at a client’s home. 

Individual will be able to:

• Encounter visits with clients that have communicable diseases.
• Effectively deal with clients with various health issues such as: hearing/sight/memory loss or dementia, drug/alcohol abuse, mental disorders.
• Encounter individuals who are economically challenge.
• On occasion be exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, toxic, or caustic chemicals.

Selection Process

The most highly qualified applicants will be invited to undergo an oral panel interview, dates and times to be announced. The selected candidate must successfully pass the final phase of the hiring process that includes a reference check, fingerprinting, an acceptable driving record, a medical examination and a pre-employment drug test. In compliance with Federal requirement, the selected candidate must provide documentation validating the right to work in the United States. ADA accommodations will be provided to requesting applicants upon at least 48 hours advance notice. 

Please note, after Conditional Offer, candidate will be required to pass a City of Pacifica pre-employment background check, which will include live scan clearance, reference checks and DOT commercial drivers medical exam.
