• Full-time regular position
• Must be willing to work varied hours including operational holidays, Saturdays, early morning hours (from 4:30 a.m.), and/or evenings (until 8:30 p.m.)
• Salary ranges from $23.42 - $29.93 hourly with Excellent Benefits (see below)

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Education/Training: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade

Experience: One year of experience in the operation of a transit vehicle.

License or Certificate: 

• Possession of an appropriate, valid commercial driver’s license with passenger endorsement.
• Possession of a valid Medical Examination Certification.
• Possession of, or ability to obtain within the initial training period, a Verification of Transit Training certificate.

POSITION HIGHLIGHTS 

• Diverse and Impactful Project Involvement: Review diverse residential and commercial plans, influencing safe, code-compliant development.  

• Public & Professional Interaction: Collaborate with industry professionals and assist the public with code and permit guidance. 

• Key Role in Permit Process: Perform plan checks, revisions, evaluate permit fees and coordinate with the design team to move the projects forward towards permit issuance. 

We have an excellent opportunity in the Building Division for the position of Plan Check Assistant!

We are seeking a customer service-oriented individual with the competence and experience to address challenges with confidence and professionalism. The Plan Check Assistant performs a range of duties in reviewing and checking building construction plans (residential, commercial, and industrial) for compliance with all applicable State and City codes. 

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES 

• Read and interpret architectural and structural engineering plans to ensure conformance with the California codes, structural design codes, and local municipal codes.  

• Respond to inquiries from, and provide information to architects, engineers, contractors, building designers, homeowners, and the general public regarding project status, plan checking, and other code-related issues  

• Provide assistance at the public service counter (over-the-counter plan checking, code and permit fee questions)  

• Perform routine engineering analysis and calculations  

• Approve over-the-counter plan revisions to issued permits

Under direction of the Chief Building/Fire Code Official, performs complex residential and commercial inspections of buildings and structures in various stages of construction, alteration and repair for compliance with applicable building, accessibility, energy and zoning codes and ordinances; responds to inquiries from the public, applicants, contractors and other City staff and departments; performs related duties as required.

Under general supervision of the Chief Building/Fire Code Official or designee, performs complex and detailed inspections of structures for conformance to codes, ordinances, approved plans, calculations and specifications; reads and interprets construction drawings and specifications for compliance with codes, ordinances, energy and disabled access requirements; conducts investigations of suspected violations of the Municipal and Building codes, including code enforcement; may assist in training other Building Inspectors and providing direction to other technical and/or clerical staff, including temporary; employees. The City of Berkeley invites you to apply for the position of Supervising Transportation Engineer in the Transportation Division of the Public Works Department! In this role, you will serve as the City's technical expert in the traffic engineering field. You'll oversee administrative, technical, planning, and design work while ensuring contract compliance with specifications and engineering standards.

Current projects and opportunities in the Transportation Division include the MLK Jr Way Vision Zero Quick Build, Southside Complete Streets Project, and other projects associated with the City's safety, accessibility, and sustainability goals.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

A typical way of gaining the knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position is equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university with major coursework in civil or traffic engineering and five years of increasingly responsible professional traffic engineering experience, three years of which were at a level equivalent to the Associate Transportation Engineer class.

Other requirements include:

• Possession of a valid California Registration as a professional Traffic Engineer or professional Civil Engineer. California Registration as a professional Traffic Engineer is preferred.
• Must be able to travel to various locations within and outside the City of Berkeley to meet the program needs and to fulfill the job responsibilities. When driving on City business, maintenance of a valid California driver's license and satisfactory driving record is required.
