The City of Berkeley invites you to apply for the position of Equipment Superintendent in the Public Works Department—a critical leadership role at the center of the City’s fleet strategy and sustainability goals. Working in close partnership with the Public Works Operations Manager, you will help shape the future of Berkeley’s diverse and highly visible municipal fleet.

The Equipment Maintenance Division includes 14 full-time technicians and two supervisors, and the Equipment Superintendent is directly accountable for ensuring safe, efficient, and fiscally responsible fleet operations. This role offers the opportunity to lead and innovate while managing two repair facilities and overseeing a fleet of more than 570 vehicles and equipment assets, including light-duty vehicles, on- and off-road heavy equipment, refuse trucks, generators, and emergency vehicles.

A key focus of this position is advancing the City’s fleet electrification and clean transportation initiatives, including navigating California’s Advanced Clean Fleets regulations and collaborating with Engineering to plan and build the required charging infrastructure. You will work closely with user departments—primarily Police, Fire, Parks, Public Works, and the Zero Waste Division—to ensure the right equipment is procured, maintained, and deployed, while providing clear and actionable reporting on fleet condition, utilization, and lifecycle costs.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
A typical way of gaining the knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position is:

EDUCATION
Equivalent to graduation from high school. Additional coursework in vehicle and equipment maintenance, public or business administration, or related areas is preferred.

EXPERIENCE
Seven years of increasingly responsible equipment maintenance experience at the journey level or above which includes a minimum of three years supervision at a level equivalent to or above the Mechanic Supervisor class.

Additional coursework in vehicle and equipment maintenance, public or business administration, or related areas may be substituted for the non-supervisory experience, on a year-for-year basis.

POSITION

To plan, organize and manage all activities and programs for a specified division of library operations or services, to include the supervision, coordination, promotion and evaluation of division program.  The purpose of this recruitment is to fill a current vacancy in our Teen Programs within the Woodland Public Library, as well as establish an eligibility list for future vacancies.

Library Program Manager I: This is the entry level class in the professional library series. Assignments are generally limited in scope and within the design and procedural framework established by the Library Services Director. However, as experience is acquired, the employee performs with increasing independence.

Library Program Manager II: This is the journey level class in the professional library series. Positions in this class are flexibly staffed and are normally filled by advancement from the lower class of Librarian Program Manager I, or when filled from the outside, require prior professional library work experience.  Appointment to the higher class requires that the employee be performing substantially the full range of duties for the class and meet the qualification standards for the class. Work in this class is distinguished from that of a Library Program Manager I by greater complexity of the assignments received and by greater independence with which an incumbent is expected to operate.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

• Develops and interprets division policies.
• Coordinates program planning and service delivery for the division.
• Develops and conducts programs which reflect the guiding principles of the Library and public librarianship.
• Develops and monitors collection development plan for division collection. Supervises the
  collection development activities of other staff. Responsible for appearance and order of division collection.
• Supervises cataloging, classification, and processing of all library materials using ALA and LC principles and practices.
• Provides relevant training to professional staff, library technical assistants, pages, and volunteers.
• Supervises and participates in the evaluation and hiring of all division staff.
• Participates in near-term and long-range planning for the division, including budget forecasting.
• Coordinates staff review of programs, services and policies for evaluation and improvement.
• Researches and identifies future grant opportunities that align with the Library’s needs and goals, implements all stages of grant process from conception and writing to implementation, reporting, and evaluation.
• Coordinates program planning with school Librarians to ensure complementary services to students.
• Provides leadership in working relationships and communication, ensuring high productivity and quality public service; with other community agencies and city departments.
• Prepares materials to publicize the services and resources of the division.
  Evaluates the various programs to ensure success with the Community, and adjust the programs as needed.
• Prepares regular reports for the Library Services Director.
• Maintains awareness of trends in library services and of issues affecting services to a specific population. Attends meetings and participates in professional library organizations.
• Regular, predictable, consistent and timely attendance is an essential function of the position.
• Performs duties in other library divisions and participates in special library projects as needed.
• Supervises the entire library, including personnel and facilities, in the absence of the Library Services Director.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education

DESCRIPTION

The City of Thousand Oaks has an excellent opportunity for a Landscape Maintenance Worker I/II in the Public Works department.

Primary Responsibilities:

• Perform skilled work in the pruning, care, and maintenance of trees and grounds maintenance, including chemical application duties

The Department:

The Santa Clara City Library is a department of the City and has positioned itself as a dynamic community hub, providing access to information, literacy resources, educational programming, and promotes civic engagement in Santa Clara. This is the entry-level class within the literacy series responsible for helping raise community awareness of the library’s adult and family literacy services. The Rail Maintenance unit represents more than 8 maintenance sections with skilled craft personnel responsible for the service, maintenance and repair of fleet comprised of more than 250 light rail vehicles, cable cars, and historic street cars including support facilities. 

9180 - Manager VI: Senior Operations Manager of Maintenance: The positions are responsible for leading overall vehicle and equipment maintenance, collaborating with fleet engineering for rubber-tire and/or rail cars, developing vehicle fleet plans to support revenue service requirements and monitoring activities related to vehicle procurement. These positions direct activities to ensure compliance with local, state and federal guidelines, safety and regulatory policies including leading investigation of activities directly related to field safety and overall vehicle maintenance.

The 9180 Senior Operations Managers of Maintenance are responsible for implementing programs and processes to enhance all aspects heavy and light-duty transit vehicles, and/or light rail and historic service. These positions provide leadership and guidance to a team of skilled craft personnel and supervisors, deliver highly complex management and policy support, and may be required to perform duties in the absence of the Deputy Director of Fleet Maintenance. The positions are subject to 24-hour callback during emergency situations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities for Bus and Rail Maintenance:

• Provides direction, planning and management of the daily activities of Transit’s Bus/Rail Maintenance section and coordinates the work of professional and technical personnel;
• Oversees heavy-duty transit vehicle maintenance/ light rail vehicle maintenance by monitoring daily fleet availability and vehicle maintenance reports for trends and coordinates with supervisory staff to ensure maintenance programs are developed and implemented to ensure vehicle availability;
• Ensures adherence to heavy-duty transit, light rail, historic, and/or cable car vehicle safety programs and re-evaluates existing programs;
• Assists in developing and implementing strategies for safe, accessible and reliable transit service;
• Analyzes operations to improve productivity within various work sections;
• Coordinates workforce planning through staffing analysis and required adjustments to work schedules and staffing levels to ensure maximum efficiency for fulfillment of vehicle service requirements and demands;
• May be involved with the design and review of engineering plans and specifications for SFMTA vehicle procurement plans and construction projects;
• Oversees the training function including the development of new training programs for rail staff;
• Develops, implements and evaluates policies and procedures to ensure unit activities align with division objectives;
• Assists in the development, preparation and modification of short and long-range strategic plans in support of the SFMTA’s goals;
• Interprets and applies the provisions of the labor agreements in accordance with SFMTA guidelines and serves as a member of the management team in meetings and negotiations with labor unions;
• Develops, monitors and manages the operating budget for area of responsibility and assists in the development, analysis and administration of department’s capital budget;
• Develops detailed technical reports for various internal stakeholders and external regulatory agencies; 

The 9180 – Manager VI may perform other duties as assigned/required. 

Minimum Qualifications:

1. Education: Possession of a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university; AND
2. Experience: Eight (8) years of experience at a mass transit agency in the operation, maintenance, and repair of transit buses, and/or light rail transit vehicles, and/or related systems, and/or heavy-duty vehicle maintenance.  This experience must include at least four (4) years in a second-level supervisory and/or management-level position with responsibility for supervising staff. AND
3. License: Possession of a valid driver’s license.

Substitution: Additional qualifying experience in the functional areas listed above at any level (i.e., non-supervisory, any supervisory level, management level) may be substituted for the required degree on a year-for year basis. One year (2,000 hours) will be considered equivalent to thirty semester units or forty-five (45) quarter units.

Notes:

ABOUT THE POSITION

The Library Information Technology Technician is distinguished from the Information Technology Analyst series in that the latter supports the following: computer systems for various departments’ citywide, data center operations, complex networking equipment, telephony and WAN technologies.  This class is further distinguished from the Library Systems Coordinator class in the latter is responsible for overall coordination of activities related to the library’s information system.

This role is ideal for candidates who enjoy helping others, solving technical challenges, and contributing to a welcoming and information-rich community space.

Typical tasks include, but are not limited to:

• Install, configure, upgrade and repair hardware, software, and networked equipment including modems, printers, scanners, kiosks, etc.
• Diagnose, trouble shoot and resolve complex problems with personal computers, printers, servers, software, and related equipment.
• Respond to and resolve questions and problems from users; provide technical support, user assistance and training.
• Image and roll out new workstations.
• Respond to emergency requests for equipment repair. 
• Assist in the design and development of new systems; assist with integrating new programming code into existing programs to meet user needs.
• Evaluate and revise software and procedures to promote efficiency.
• Compile date and prepare summary reports.
• Answer routine in-person and telephone directional and informational questions.
• Maintain an inventory of all work activities, as appropriate.
• Install, maintain, and troubleshoot shared public use computers.
• Perform other library duties, as assigned.

THE POSITION

The City is currently seeking General Maintenance Workers. This temporary position works with the City’s maintenance staff to perform: unskilled labor in the parks and landscape medians, street and sidewalk maintenance, street sign maintenance, and fleet building maintenance. Duties include, but are not limited to: raking, emptying trash cans and litter removal, irrigation repair, weeding, edging, street sign maintenance and graffiti removal. Work is closely supervised; work methods are explained in specific terms and work is subject to frequent review. 

Incumbents must possess the physical and mental capacity to work under the conditions described in this document and to perform the duties required by their assigned position.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES

• Knowledge of methods, materials, and equipment used in landscaping, street and sidewalk maintenance, and building maintenance, as well as safety practices and precautions to be used in work.
• Skill in operating hand and power tool equipment such as rakes, pick and shovel, etc.
• Ability to work outdoors in all weather and to follow oral and written instructions. Intermittently, sit while studying or listening to training; bend, squat, climb, kneel and twist when performing maintenance, repair, or installation tasks; perform simple and power grasping, pushing, pulling, and fine manipulation; and lift or carry heavy weights up to 90 lbs.; work in conditions of various outdoor exposure.
• Capable of working independently.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

• Driving a city truck is required for the position and the applicant must have an acceptable driving record, subject to California DMV pull records.
• Ability to work Saturday and/or Sunday shifts.  Hours are 7AM-4:30PM and may fluctuate due to operational needs.
