Join the City of San Bruno Community Services Department, Parks Division as a Parks Maintenance Technician I/II (Tree Maintenance Technician I/II)

 

The Community Services Department is committed to providing quality programs, services, and spaces to benefit the health and well-being of the community. Within Community Services, the Parks Maintenance Division is responsible for the maintenance of all City’s outdoor recreation sites, including 20 parks covering 68 acres, 6 baseball fields, 128 acres of open space, all City owned facilities, over 7 miles of medians, and one dog park.   

 

Under the supervision of the Parks Field Supervisor, the Parks Maintenance Technician
performs semi-skilled, skilled and administrative work within Parks Division in areas such as general carpentry, electrical or plumbing repair, irrigation system installation, tree trimming, tree removal, root removal, the planting and care of new trees, and the care and maintenance of all related equipment. 

 

CORE DUTIES 

Examples of duties may include, but are not limited to: 

• Plans, carries out and evaluates preventive maintenance schedules for all designated mechanical equipment, either personally, or through outside vendors.  

• Inspects, diagnoses, and performs major and minor repair work on motors, hydraulic equipment, compressors, controls, valves and related equipment.  

• Operates a variety of diagnostic instruments and a variety of hand, electric, and air- driven tools. Tests, troubleshoots, services and repairs mechanical equipment.  

• Inspects, adjusts and replaces necessary units and related parts in the performance of repair and maintenance work.  

• Fabricates and modifies parts and equipment as necessary. 

• Evaluates status of mechanical equipment, and performs or schedules needed repairs. Provides emergency field assistance to disabled equipment as needed and appropriate.  

• Assists in the preparation of bid specifications for equipment.  

• Maintains records, prepares reports and other specialized maintenance records of equipment. 

• Operates aerial lift truck, brush chippers, stump grinders and chainsaws and related hydraulic pruning equipment.  

• Identifies tree pests, disease and structural weakness, removes diseased, dead or excess limbs, branches or trees.  

• As required, trims trees from the ground and with the use of aerial lift devices, picks up trimmings or wood and loads into truck, debris box or brush chipper for disposal.  

• Climbs and trims trees using ropes and saddle or other equipment.  

• Sets up rigging, slings and lines for lowering cut limbs and branches. Plants, stakes and installs new trees. 

• Performs lamp replacement on sports field lighting fixtures. 

• Performs other duties as assigned.  

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 

Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be: Parks Maintenance Technician I Graduation from high school or GED equivalent with possession of technical training in a specialized field of maintenance. Two (2) years of increasingly responsible repair and maintenance experience. Parks Maintenance Technician II Graduation from high school or GED equivalent with possession of technical training in a specialized field of maintenance. Four (4) years of increasingly responsible repair and maintenance experience. 

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS  

Possession of a valid Class "B" Commercial Driver's License, or ability to successfully obtain prior to completion of probationary period; and Specialized certifications for functional work areas required:  

When assigned as a Tree Maintenance Technician I/II:  

Utility Line Clearance Certification, or ability to successfully obtain prior to completion of probationary period.  

Tree Worker Certification from the International Society of Arboriculture, or ability to successfully obtain prior to completion of probationary period (Tree Technician II only).  

 

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED  

Motorized vehicles such as pick-up, utility van, aerial and/or dump trucks; traffic control devices; mobile or portable radio; telephone; personal computer; hand tools; power tools; ropes, pulleys, winches; safety apparatus.  

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Requires the maintenance of physical conditioning necessary to operate motorized equipment and vehicles. The employee may be required to free climb in tall trees or to perform work in underground trenches. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.  

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may work either indoors or in outside weather conditions. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and vibration. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock. The employee may be required to work night, early morning, or weekend hours, depending on workload factors, in addition to normally scheduled work hours.  

 

Employee is subject to call back after hours, weekend assignment and to respond to emergency situations on a 24-hour basis, seven days per week in addition to normally scheduled work hours.  

 

The noise level in the work environment can range from moderately quiet to loud.

About the Position:  The Land Stewardship & Trails Department is Midpen’s largest department and the Seasonal Open Space Technicians play an important role assisting during the construction season. The Seasonal Open Space Technicians assist with building and maintaining roads and trails on Midpen lands, and operate mechanical equipment such as chainsaws, power pruners and mowers. Seasonal Open Space Technicians also use hand and power tools to do semi-skilled carpentry, construction tasks, and remove invasive non-native plants. Additional duties include cleanup, routine maintenance in buildings and restrooms, and other tasks as required. Coveralls & personal protective equipment (PPE) are provided. Seasonal employees are provided with uniform items, chainsaws appropriate work boots may need to be purchased by the employee if this items is not already owned. Start dates will be in April 2026 and the selected individuals will continue working through October 2026.

Requirements:  Basic requirements include high school diploma or G.E.D.; possession of a valid California driver’s license; skills to perform basic construction and maintenance assignments; ability to perform manual labor requiring bending, stooping, kneeling, and lifting; and the ability to work in, or around, poison oak. Highly desirable traits include prior work experience in a park, forest, or public recreation area involving work with equipment and tools used in park maintenance.  Candidates selected for the position will be required to successfully pass and obtain a certification in Basic First Aid/CPR, AED for Lay Responders.   

 

Schedules: This is a full-time (preferred), Monday through Friday position, with occasional weekend and holiday work required. Seasonal assignments will not exceed 950 hours or 6 months, whichever comes first, and do not include benefits. Seasonal Open Space Technicians are expected to work a minimum of 5 consecutive months.

Working Conditions:  Employees work in the field in rugged and remote areas and are exposed to loud noise levels, cold and hot temperatures, inclement weather conditions, road hazards, vibration, confining workspace, chemicals, mechanical or electrical hazards, hazardous physical substances and fumes, and poison oak.

THE POSITION 

The City of South San Francisco seeks customer service-oriented individuals to join the Community Resource Team at the new Library | Parks and Recreation Center. This position is shared between the Library Department and Parks and Recreation Department and works under the direction of the Community Resource Analyst. The Community Resource Clerk will typically be stationed at the lobby desks on the first and second floors of the new Library | Parks and Recreation Center at 901 Civic Campus Way in South San Francisco, however, may temporarily be assigned to other sites, or to represent the departments at special events. The Santa Clara City Library is a department of the City and has positioned itself as a dynamic community hub, providing access to information, literacy resources, educational programming, and promotes civic engagement in Santa Clara. The Library Department is organized into several divisions: Administration, Adult Services, Branch Services, Customer Services, Facilities, Read Santa Clara, Technical and Technology Services and Youth Services. Santa Clara City Library is in the process of finalizing and implementing its new Strategic Plan that will support the direction of future library services. 

 

Position

Read Santa Clara, the adult and family literacy program of the Santa Clara City Library, has offered English as a Second Language (ESL) services since 2023, as part of a state grant project. The ESL Program Assistant provides 1:1 and small group tutoring for limited English-speaking adults to strengthen their basic English speaking and listening skills and help achieve their goals. This position works with and reports to the ESL Program Specialist and Literacy Program Supervisor. This position is responsible for supporting literacy volunteers, assessing adult learners’ literacy needs, and documenting program data for grant reporting.  The ideal candidate has a passion for serving adults with limited English language skills from historically underserved communities.

 

This is a grant funded position for 15 hours a week till June 30, 2026. The position’s continuation beyond this date is subject to the availability of grant funds.

 

As an as-needed employee, this is an "at-will" position and there is no guarantee of hours. Hours are limited to 999 in a fiscal year or 960 hours in a fiscal year for retired CalPERS annuitants.

• Assist with collecting and maintaining accurate data in a timely manner for grant reporting

ABOUT THE POSITION

 

The Redwood City Public Library is looking for a community-centered, values-driven person who will deliver active and engaged customer service, with a focus on supporting self-service and delivering a top-notch experience for each visitor of the library. The ideal candidate will work well with others to achieve goals in a fast-paced, innovative team environment. The candidate will be friendly, outgoing, enthusiastic, creative, technologically savvy and able to consistently provide superb service to a diverse community of library users. This selected candidate will work year-round 5-15 hours per week including nights and weekends, at any of our library facilities – Redwood City Downtown Library, Redwood Shores Branch Library and Schaberg Branch Library. 

 

Typical duties may include, but are not limited to the following: 

• Greet customers when entering and leaving the library;
• Provide customer service at all service points;
• Assist customers with self checkouts and other self service needs;
• Perform library services using new technologies;
• Issue library cards to new customers;
• Collect fines and fees; answer routine in-person and telephone information questions;
• Explain library policies and resolve problems and complaints;
• Assist customers with computers and other devices;
• Follow opening and closing procedures;
• Assist in preparation and maintenance of displays of library materials;
• Collect statistics;
• Assist with preparing library materials for circulation;
• Perform routine clerical assignments and perform related duties as assigned

The mission of the Maintenance Operations Department is to enhance the community by providing high quality maintenance services through the maintenance of safe and effective transportation systems and public infrastructure that support a desirable quality of life for residents, businesses, and visitors, and to support the City organization with efficient and effective services for City buildings and fleet vehicles.

The Ideal Candidate - Light Equipment

The ideal candidate should possess a combination of technical skills, certifications, experience, and professional attributes suited to complete a full range of journey level mechanic work by performing preventative maintenance repair and overhaul of gasoline, diesel, alternative fuel, hybrid and electric automobiles, light and medium duty trucks, and related equipment that includes but is not limited to emergency generators, small construction equipment, bituminous machine, trailers, arrow board trailers, message board trailers, gas, diesel, and electric driven carts, landscape trucks, paint sprayer trucks, pressure washer trailers.
