The City of Foster City is recruiting for the position of Public Works Maintenance Worker / Maintenance Worker I / Maintenance Worker II. This is a flexibly staffed position and may be filled at any level within the series. This position requires demonstrated competency and increasing independence, knowledge and ability in performing routine and special assignments in a variety of maintenance program areas in the Public Works Department. In order to provide a broad base of knowledge and provide employee development, positions are expected to rotate through all of the maintenance divisions -- Streets/Lagoons, Water, and Wastewater Divisions.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Operates hand and power tools, light and heavy construction equipment and specialized wastewater equipment. Handles and applies chemicals. Maintains, operates, inspects, repairs and installs lagoon system facilities, including piping, storm drains, catch basins, sub-drains, meters, pumping stations, pumps, controls, measuring devices, cathodic protection systems, communications systems and related appurtenances. Installs, removes and replaces asphalt and concrete. Installs traffic counting equipment, traffic and parking control signs, traffic markings and red curbs. Operates small powerboats and street paving and painting equipment.

Maintenance Worker:
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities. A typical way would be:
Education: Completion of a job or technical training program in maintenance or construction; completion of high school or the equivalent.
Experience: One year of full time experience in general maintenance or construction.
Maintenance Worker I:
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities. A typical way would be:
Education: Completion of a job or technical training program in maintenance or construction; completion of high school or the equivalent.
Experience: One year of full-time related experience equivalent to a Maintenance Worker at the City of Foster City.
Maintenance Worker II:
Education: Completion of a job or technical training program in maintenance or construction; completion of high school or the equivalent.
Experience: At least two years of experience as a Maintenance Worker I with the City of Foster City Public Works department, or two years of equivalent experience with a comparable employer.
LICENSES, CERTIFICATES AND REGISTRATION:
Maintenance Worker / Maintenance Worker I:
Possession of a valid California Class "C" Driver’s License; maintain license and a good driving record. Must obtain, meet requirements, and maintain a valid California Class "B" Driver's License with appropriate endorsements within six months of appointment.
Maintenance Worker II:
Possession of a valid California Class "C" and California Class "B" Driver's License with appropriate endorsements; meet requirements, maintain license and a good driving record.
Special Licenses or certificates in at least one of the following program specialty areas is highly desirable:
Water - Grade 1 or 2 Water Distribution Certificate (State of California); Back Flow Prevention Device Testing License
Wastewater - Grade 1 or 2 Wastewater Collections Certificate (CWPCA)
Streets/Lagoons - Qualified Applicator Certificate, Level III Traffic Control Advisors Certificate

SELECTION PROCEDURE:
A limited number of the most qualified candidates will be invited to continue in the selection process. The recruitment process may consist of any of the following components: application review, written exam, physical/performance test and oral board interview. The Employment List will consist of candidates that successfully complete the recruitment process. A departmental interview will be scheduled to fill the current vacancy following the establishment of the Employment List. This list will be in effect for at least one year. After a conditional job offer, applicants must complete a pre-employment medical examination and fingerprinting. These positions are subject to pre-employment and random drug testing programs.
