The City of Berkeley invites you to apply for the position of Equipment Superintendent in the Public Works Department—a critical leadership role at the center of the City’s fleet strategy and sustainability goals. Working in close partnership with the Public Works Operations Manager, you will help shape the future of Berkeley’s diverse and highly visible municipal fleet.

The Equipment Maintenance Division includes 14 full-time technicians and two supervisors, and the Equipment Superintendent is directly accountable for ensuring safe, efficient, and fiscally responsible fleet operations. This role offers the opportunity to lead and innovate while managing two repair facilities and overseeing a fleet of more than 570 vehicles and equipment assets, including light-duty vehicles, on- and off-road heavy equipment, refuse trucks, generators, and emergency vehicles.

A key focus of this position is advancing the City’s fleet electrification and clean transportation initiatives, including navigating California’s Advanced Clean Fleets regulations and collaborating with Engineering to plan and build the required charging infrastructure. You will work closely with user departments—primarily Police, Fire, Parks, Public Works, and the Zero Waste Division—to ensure the right equipment is procured, maintained, and deployed, while providing clear and actionable reporting on fleet condition, utilization, and lifecycle costs.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
A typical way of gaining the knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position is:

EDUCATION
Equivalent to graduation from high school. Additional coursework in vehicle and equipment maintenance, public or business administration, or related areas is preferred.

EXPERIENCE
Seven years of increasingly responsible equipment maintenance experience at the journey level or above which includes a minimum of three years supervision at a level equivalent to or above the Mechanic Supervisor class.

Additional coursework in vehicle and equipment maintenance, public or business administration, or related areas may be substituted for the non-supervisory experience, on a year-for-year basis.

LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Must possess a valid California driver's license and have a satisfactory driving record.

The Department: 

The City of Santa Clara is looking to fill multiple As-Needed- Temporary Employee positions to support the Annual Cleanup Campaign. Successful incumbents will be assigned to work as ground crews shoving, sweeping, and lifting up to 50lbs of debris left by Santa Clara residents.

The Position: 

In this temporary employment opportunity, you will gain valuable experience working with the public and demonstrate teamwork amongst your peers as you become part of a dedicated crew.

A mandatory paid orientation is tentatively scheduled for April, 2026, where employees will receive training, safety boots, and the necessary equipment to perform the job. This position will work from 6:45am-4:15pm, 40-45 hours a week, Monday-Friday between April 27, 2026 - May 22, 2026. 

As an as-needed employee, this is an "at-will" position and there is no guarantee of hours. Hours are limited to 999 in a fiscal year or 960 hours in a fiscal year for retired CalPERS annuitants.

The City of Newark is seeking a knowledgeable Equipment Mechanic I/II with hands-on automotive experience to join our Public Works Maintenance Division. This position is responsible for maintaining and repairing City vehicles and equipment; ability to repair gasoline, diesel powered, or alternative fuel powered automotives; organization and log of tasks done and perform a variety of technical tasks relative to assigned areas of responsibility.

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:

• Equipment Mechanic I
  • Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent, and six (6) months of general automotive or equipment maintenance and repair experience.

DEFINITION

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This is the entry-level class for Water System Operator and Street Maintenance & Sewer Collection System Operator positions in both the Water and Street, Sewer & Downtown Divisions.  Employees hired in either of these positions may reasonably expect promotion to the Water System Operator or Street Maintenance & Sewer Collection System Operator classes upon completion of one year's satisfactory service, completion of probation, and for the Streets, Storm Drains and Sewer Divisions, obtaining a class B driver’s license, passing a CWEA Grade 1 test, and for the Water Division, passing a DHS Grade D-1 test.

Street, Sewer & Downtown Division

Essential Duties:

Works with the following crews: Sign and Paint Crew; Paving Crew; Pothole Crew; Service Repair Crew; Pump Station Maintenance and Repair Crew; Sweeper Pile Crew; Sewer Rodder Crew and Hydro Jet Crew. Assists in laying pipe and sewer lines; sweeps and cleans roadsides, gutters, curbs, culverts, catch basins and other drainage structures; removes debris and undergrowth; assists in setting forms and mixing and pouring concrete; assists in raking, smoothing and tamping repaired patches; assists in the maintenance of mechanical equipment; assists in the layout of traffic patterns on streets and in the operation of painting equipment; cleans mechanical equipment and basic tools used on the job. Assists in maneuvering and driving hydro-jet truck and other equipment associated with this operation. Assists in preventative maintenance and unblocking of sewers using mechanical and hydro-jetting.

Other Duties: Serves as flag person when working in traffic and works in confined spaces.

Water Division

Essential Duties:

Assists in laying pipe and water lines; assists in making taps and connections to mains; assists in the maintenance of mechanical equipment; cleans mechanical equipment and maintains basic tools used on the job.

Other Duties: Serve as flag person when working in traffic; read water meters and assist water service worker; work in confined spaces.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (The following are minimal qualifications necessary for entry into the classification.)     

Knowledge of: 

Uses and purposes of designated hand tools employed in basic laboring work, safety precautions and practices, basic math and sufficient English to follow instructions and learn to write work reports.

Ability to:

Learn safety practices necessary in working on public thoroughfares; learn geography of the city; read and interpret plans and city block book maps; take notes and instructions and complete them accordingly; learn to perform semi-skilled and skilled duties in the assigned division.

Possession of a valid Class C driver's license issued by the DMV, and the ability to obtain a Class B driver's license upon the end of a one-year probationary period.

PHYSICAL, MENTAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

Street, Sewer & Downtown Division

Ability to perform heavy manual labor including lifting and carrying heavy objects for short distances weighing up to ninety (90) pounds, including manhole covers; perform the pulling, pushing, twisting and bending needed for rodding sewer; work outdoors in adverse weather; perform pick and shovel work in digging, widening and backfilling; assist in the cleaning of sewers which includes working in raw sewage.

Ability to stand and walk for considerable periods of time; twist the upper body; perform moderate amounts of crouching, stooping, and squatting. Ability to climb ladders and to climb into confined spaces; to work weekends and evenings as necessary, and to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Sufficient vision, hearing and stamina to perform the above job duties, and use of proper safety and hearing equipment when using noisy and dangerous equipment.

Water Division

The City of Thousand Oaks has an excellent opportunity for a Landscape Maintenance Worker I/II in the Public Works department.

Primary Responsibilities:

DEFINITION

ABOUT THE FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM

The Department of Community Development is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Management Fellow. The City of Redwood City, Community Development Department is seeking a value-driven team player to join the Department. Through mentorship and under general supervision, the Fellow will assist in coordinating and managing specific projects to completion in the areas of budgeting, planning, community engagement, procurement, and legislative policy, especially related to the Planning and Building Divisions in Community Development.

Some of the various projects and responsibilities may include:

• Performing policy research and analysis, identifying relevant legislation, and developing recommendation positions as related to Planning and Building policy
