THE POSITION

Under supervision of the Public Works Manager, the Maintenance Worker I performs entry level unskilled, semi-skilled, or skilled labor in construction, maintenance, and related service activities applied to the areas of general landscaping, grounds maintenance and street maintenance.

 TYPICAL TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Grounds Maintenance:  Operate mowers and other equipment and tools for purposes of cutting grass, trimming trees and shrubs, and planting and transplanting flowers, bulbs, shrubs, and trees.
• Storm Prevention Maintenance:  Assist in cleaning ditches, culverts, and storm drains.
• Street Maintenance: Assist in repainting of pavement markings, basic pothole, and street repair; installation and repair of street signs and markers; mixing and application of Class III pesticide materials.
• Vehicle/Equipment Maintenance:  Assist in the care, maintenance and cleaning of vehicles, tools, and equipment.
• General:  Contact residents concerning maintenance and service problems; refer complaints and requests to proper supervisory personnel. Assist supervisory personnel in preparing and maintaining proper records and logs. Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other City employees and the public using principles of good customer service.

QUALIFICATIONS

The general knowledge of basic construction methods, materials and terminology, standard hand tools, light equipment, and light vehicles; general knowledge of basic safety precautions and practices necessary in working with hand tools, light equipment, and vehicles; general knowledge of basic methods and practices involved in the care of shrubs, trees and flowers. Ability to learn technically complex construction and maintenance procedures in water systems, streets, parks and building maintenance; use hand and power tools; perform heavy manual labor for extended periods of time under inclement weather conditions; work alone or with small groups.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Possession of a valid California driver's license and ability to maintain a satisfactory driving history.

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

Completion of high school or its equivalent, or completion of a trade or vocational school.  Some directly related experience is desirable.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

• Monthly Salary: $4,855 to $6,269 per month. Placement within the range will be based upon the selected candidate’s experience and salary history.
• Health/Medical Benefit: Health/Medical Benefit: Choice of coverage with Kaiser or Blue Shield. The City pays 80% of monthly premiums at each coverage level. In lieu of medical coverage, the City will contribute $400 (employee only coverage) or $500 (employee + 1 coverage) or $600 (family coverage) in cash or a pre-tax contribution into a MissionSquare Retirement 457 deferred compensation plan.

 SELECTION

MAINTENANCE I – PARKS & GROUNDS

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS:

The Maintenance I classification represents the journey-level within the Parks and Grounds Maintenance class series. Individuals within this class exhibit comprehensive proficiency in independently carrying out a spectrum of Parks & Grounds maintenance responsibilities. This entails not only performing tasks such as inspecting, cleaning, repairing, and maintaining City parks, landscape areas, and trail systems, but also making informed decisions regarding safety and usability. The Maintenance I role stands apart from Maintenance II, the lead-level in the series, as Maintenance II holds responsibility for overseeing the tasks performed by a crew engaged in parks and grounds maintenance.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Equivalent to graduation from high school and three (3) years of progressively responsible work experience, such as in-person, telephone, and written contacts indicating effective communication and customer service skills.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

A typical way of gaining the knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position is completion of 60 college semester units. Previous volunteer or paid experience in a law enforcement support area is desirable.
 
Other requirements include:

• Must be free from any disqualifications for employment, including felony convictions.
• Must be legally authorized to work in the United States under federal law.

Applicants may waive the written exam only by submitting a California POST Entry Level Law Enforcement Test Battery (PELLETB) T-score of 48 points or higher. Responds to questions from the public about animal breeds, temperament and adoptions;  advises public on appropriate choices for adoption and the proper care, treatment and control of animals.
 
Cleans, disinfects and maintains kennels and kennel area; performs dishwashing and laundering tasks.
 
Maintains a computerized log and record of all animals at shelter.
 
Reports any animals exhibiting symptoms of ill health or communicable disease.
 
Maintains inventories and supplies of food, medicines and controlled drugs, completing the necessary forms.

Assists in supervising volunteers.

The City of Berkeley invites you to apply for the position of Camp Maintenance Mechanic (Non-Career Intermittent) in the Parks, Recreation and Waterfront Department! In this role, you will have the opportunity to keep our camps running smoothly by performing both routine and heavy, physical work in the construction, maintenance, repair and cleaning of camp facilities. State of California Drinking Water Treatment Certifications (Grade 1 or 2) desirable. Must possess sufficient strength and stamina to lift and carry objects weighing up to 80 pounds and be able to perform sustained heavy physical labor. Must be willing to work outdoors in all weather conditions and on off-hour shifts in emergency situations.

California Education Code Section 10911.5 requires that all public recreation program employers must fingerprint all persons having direct contact with a minor. The City does not hire persons who have been convicted of felony drug, sexual assault or physical assault crimes.

ABOUT THE POSITION:

The Seasonal Maintenance Worker position performs a variety of entry-level and unskilled labor, maintenance and repair tasks in various public works operations, such as park maintenance, landscape maintenance, creek and catch basin maintenance, street maintenance, and janitorial and facility maintenance.

Typically, work hours are scheduled between Monday through Friday, 7:00 am to 3:30 pm.  Some hours may be adjusted for special events in evening or on weekends; up to 29 hours per week.

This is a part-time, temporary position with limited duration.

EXAMPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Perform preparatory work for maintenance activities – gathering equipment, materials and supplies, loading and unloading, and laying out materials and equipment for projects
• Perform a variety of routine physical labor tasks, depending upon area of assignment, such as posting general notices, pulling weeds, picking up litter, raking leaves and debris, planting, miscellaneous painting, replacing light bulbs, emptying trash bins, cleaning park bathroom daily and other minor custodial work

• Operate power tools such as power washer, leaf blower and weed eater, as well as basic hand tools such as brooms, shovels, rakes and hoes
• Assist with daily and weekly trash pick-up on park grounds and Town trash receptacles
• Assist with other maintenance duties as assigned

BUILDING ATTENDANT

Salary:  $16.54 to $27.56/hour, non-benefitted position, DOE

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES

Facility duties may include, but are not limited to:

• Unlock and lock buildings for renters and programs.
• Be present and assist renters during events.
• Set up and breakdown tables and chairs for rentals and program classes.
• Maintain and keep facilities clean during and after events.
• Move furniture/equipment and return to appropriate storage areas after events.
• Assist renters with facility equipment usage.
• Clean sinks, counters, mirrors, stalls, floors, restrooms, and garbage disposal before and after rentals and program classes to ensure facilities are clean inside and outside.
• Performs duties within OSHA standards.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Works under general supervision of the Facilities Supervisor.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Ability to relate well to the public.
• Be reliable and responsible.
• Inform renters of current facility policies and procedures.
• Demonstrate poise and good judgment.
• Work flexible hours including weekends or holidays.
• Move furniture and operate custodial equipment.
• Lift 50 pounds; carry 30 pounds.

• Respond to emergency situations quickly and efficiently.

Desired experience:

Previous public contact experience desirable.  Knowledge of general custodial cleaning apparatus.

Education/Licenses:

High school graduate or equivalent.  Valid California Driver’s License required.

The Position

The Veterinary Technician will assist in the care of animal patients at the City’s animal shelter. Additional key responsibilities include use of medical care equipment, as well as moving and handling domestic animals and wildlife. The Veterinary Technician reports to the Animal Services Manager and assists the veterinarian, animal services officers and administrative team and is responsible for quality humane treatment of all animals in the care of the Tri-City Animal Shelter. This is an excellent leadership opportunity to provide high quality care for animal patients. The part-time Veterinary Technician will be working 20 hours per week.
