Summary Description

Under immediate supervision performs semi-skilled to skilled maintenance, repair, and construction work assigned to the streets division; operates maintenance and construction tools and equipment; performs a variety of maintenance tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility.

Distinguishing Characteristics

This is the entry level class in the Street Maintenance Operator series. This class is distinguished from the Street Maintenance Operator II by the performance of the more routine tasks and duties assigned to workers in this series. Employees at this level are not expected to perform with the same independence of direction and judgment on matters related to established procedures and guidelines as are positions allocated to the II level. Since this class is typically used as a training class, employees may have only limited or non directly related work experience. Employees work under immediate supervision while learning job tasks.

Representative Duties

The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.

1. Handle complaints and answer questions from the public.
2. Remove blight and illegal dumps from city property such as parks, right of ways, roadways, alleys, walkways, sidewalks and refuse disposal. 
3. Remove debris, shrubbery, brush, trash, tires, appliances, electronics, and miscellaneous items.
4. Make minor adjustments on service equipment; maintain tools and equipment in working order.
5. Abates graffiti.
6. Maintain logs of daily activities.
7. Assist in other areas as needed.
8. Perform related duties as required.
9. Repair and replace street surfaces, sidewalks, curbs, and gutters including back filling trenches and evacuations.
10. Perform the maintenance, repair, construction, and installation work of streets, storm drain, parking lots, street lights, traffic striping, and traffic control signs and signals.
11. Remove hazards from the roadway and other public rights of way.
12. Operate a variety of motorized equipment and specialized maintenance equipment.
13. Perform repaving, patching, overlaying, chuck hole, and crack sealing repair of asphalt.
14. Perform underground service alert locating, marking and notification.
15. Lay out and install traffic signs and pavement markings.
16. Repair and maintain storm drain lift stations.
17. Conduct traffic count surveys.
18. Maintain storm detention ponds, including cleaning, repairing, and spraying weeds.
19. Respond to hazardous materials spills.

QUALIFICATIONS

Glenn County is recruiting an individual to fill a full time position in the Public Works Agency. The Public Works Maintenance Worker I/II/III position performs a variety of semi-skilled and skilled labor in the construction, maintenance and repair of County roads, bridges, and other related structures, and in various traffic control maintenance and  repair activities of the Public Works Agency; operates a variety of construction, maintenance and transportation equipment as necessary to complete daily tasks at the Glenn County Public Works Agency. The Public Works Maintenance Worker III position is the journey-level class in the series, and is distinguished from the Public Works Maintenance Worker II by the primary responsibility to operate heavy diesel and gasoline-powered construction equipment in the maintenance of roadways, drainage systems. 
 

WHAT YOU’LL DO

• Prepares roads for patch repairs, overlays, or chip seals; prepares mix for patching roads; repairs and reconstructs roads.
• Cleans roadsides and drainage systems; inspects and clears debris from drainage systems; conducts roadside burning as needed.

What You'll Do

The Maintenance Worker position may be filled at either the I or II level based on experience. The Maintenance Worker will perform a variety of semi-skilled and skilled tasks in the construction, maintenance, and repair of streets, sidewalks, signs, sewers, storm drains, pump stations, traffic signal and street light equipment, traffic systems, or municipal buildings; and to do related work as required. Some of the duties of this position are as follows:

• Operate construction and maintenance equipment such as backhoes, motorgraders, boom trucks, tractors, vac-all and small sweepers, and skip loaders for a variety of construction and maintenance operations involving streets, sidewalks and gutters, sewer lines, and drainage channels.
• Use concrete cutting and braking equipment; operate a jackhammer; pour and finish concrete; construct concrete forms and perform rough carpentry work.
• Operate maintenance equipment and tools such as trucks, power tools, sewer rodder, hydraulic jet cleaner, vac-all, front loader, backhoe, compressor, sandblaster, power wench, boom truck, cc TV unit, main and auxiliary pumps, pneumatic and electro-mechanical controls, diesel power plants, and related equipment and tools.
• Assist pump mechanics to install, repair and modify pump station machinery and control.
• Paint traffic markings on streets, crosswalks, parking lots, and curbs; operate a striping truck.
• Assist in performing a variety of routine electrical maintenance and repair tasks.
• Assist in trash and debris control activities such as picking up of litter and other street maintenance activities as required or when weather does not permit sweeping operations.
• Fully utilize the computerized work systems in accordance with work flow processes.
• Work cooperatively and effectively with co-workers.

The Department: 

The Department of Public Works (DPW) constructs, maintains and improves various components of the City’s infrastructure and provides quality, cost-effective, timely services to the residents and businesses of Santa Clara. DPW is responsible for a wide variety of programs throughout the City which include implementation of solid waste and urban run-off pollution prevention programs, design, construction management, inspection and maintenance of City streets, bridges, storm drain systems, traffic signal systems, building facilities, fleet, street trees, landscaping and the closed landfill. The Mechanical Maintenance Position is in the Facilities Division of the Public Works Department.

The Position: 

The Mechanical Maintenance Worker is a journey level technical classification. This classification operates, lubricates, cleans, adjusts, and makes repairs to heating, ventilating, refrigeration, emergency generators, solar systems, and other stationary building equipment, and installs and troubleshoots electrical systems up to 480 volts. The Mechanical Maintenance Worker is distinguished from the Mechanical Maintenance Foreman/Forewoman in that the latter is a supervisory position responsible for supervising Mechanical Maintenance Workers and Utility Workers in the maintenance and repair of the mechanical equipment found in City buildings.

• California State issued Forklift Certification by the end of the probationary period.

Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District (Midpen) has an excellent career opportunity for an experienced and motivated Conservation Grazing Program Manager who will plan, organize, manage, oversee, and participate in the implementation of objectives outlined in the conservation grazing program and the agricultural land management projects within the District’s Coastside mission.  The ideal candidate will have a strong knowledge base of resource management principles focused on rangeland ecology, rangeland vegetation management, rangeland plant physiology, and rangeland animal management and can provide a high level of lease oversight to assist tenants with incorporating resource protection measures as part of their grazing practices.  The start date for this position is April 2026. About the Position: The Conservation Grazing Program Manager is responsible for monitoring compliance with lease terms, coordinating with grazing tenants to complete annual work plans, preparing contracts for infrastructure improvements, and soliciting proposals for grazing services, vegetation management, and infrastructure enhancements. This position is housed within the Facilities & Fleet Department and works closely with the Natural Resources department on predation issues, pond management and water supply enhancement projects, and cultural resource protection. The role also collaborates with the Land Stewardship & Trails department on the maintenance and repair of roads and culverts located on grazing properties. As the single point of contact for Midpen’s conservation grazing program, the position is expected to enhance and expand customer service support for grazing tenants and agricultural partners on the coast. Successful performance in this role requires a strong working knowledge of a broad range of resource management and property management principles, contract and project management practices, and effective program management and strategic planning skills, as well as the ability to provide guidance to multi-disciplinary teams.  This position works regularly with staff, public agencies, community groups, contractors, scientific study representatives, easement holders and grazing tenants. Work Environment: The Conservation Grazing Program Manager reports to the Facilities & Fleet Manager. This position operates in a hybrid work environment with approximately 60% of the time spent working in an administrative or field office, 10% work from home, 30% conducting field work.  Available housing is located on the San Mateo coast just south of Pescadero, CA on the coastal side of Cloverdale Open Space Preserve, which is approx. 1 hour and 15 min driving time from the Midpen’s administrative office in Los Altos. The District currently has 12,000 acres under lease for conservation grazing along the Pacific Coast extending from Half Moon Bay to Pescadero. Field work requires driving in remote areas on dirt roads, working in temperatures ranging from cold and windy to hot and dry, and hiking through steep terrain and wildland areas. District vehicles are available for use for travel to the grazing properties. Poison oak is present on several grazing properties and exposure is possible.  Ideal candidates will be comfortable working in these types of field conditions, as well as in an office environment. THE POSITION

The City is currently seeking General Maintenance Workers. This temporary position works with the City’s maintenance staff to perform: unskilled labor in the parks and landscape medians, street and sidewalk maintenance, street sign maintenance, and fleet building maintenance. Duties include, but are not limited to: raking, emptying trash cans and litter removal, irrigation repair, weeding, edging, street sign maintenance and graffiti removal. Work is closely supervised; work methods are explained in specific terms and work is subject to frequent review.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES

• Knowledge of methods, materials, and equipment used in landscaping, street and sidewalk maintenance, and building maintenance, as well as safety practices and precautions to be used in work.
• Skill in operating hand and power tool equipment such as rakes, pick and shovel, etc.
• Ability to work outdoors in all weather and to follow oral and written instructions. THE OPPORTUNITY

The City of Pacifica is recruiting for a Public Works Superintendent within the Department of Public Works. Under the direction of the Field Services Manager, the incumbents will be responsible for the field services of the Public Works Department. They will plan, organize, and direct the work of field personnel and perform related work as required. THE DEPARTMENT

The Public Works Department is responsible for maintaining and repairing the City’s infrastructure and wastewater treatment operations in an efficient and cost-effective manner while providing a high level of customer service and a safe work environment for city employees. The Department maintains parks, playing fields and medians and keeps streets and trails clean and well-maintained. The Department also coordinates the tree program, cleans beaches and coordinates the City Beautification program.

The Public Works Department is organized into three divisions including Wastewater Treatment Operations, Field Services and Engineering. The Wastewater Treatment Operations includes the operation of the Calera Creek water treatment plant and management of the collection system. Field Services oversees the maintenance of city streets, parks, trees, vehicles and public facilities. The Engineering Division manages public infrastructure projects, transportation planning and maintenance and repair of the City’s infrastructure. The Public Works Department is supported by 56 full-time staff and an annual operating budget of $4.6 million, along with a FY2023-2028 CIP appropriation of $ 8.6 million.

PUBLIC WORKS SUPERINTENDENT

DEFINITION

Under direction, manages the field services of the Public Works Department; to plan, organize, and direct the work of field personnel, including Parks, Trees, Streams Streets, Buildings, Rangers and/or Motor Pool Divisions.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISITCS

This is a management class with major responsibilities for the City’s Parks, Trees, Streams Streets, Buildings, Rangers and/or Motor Pool maintenance programs, that requires significant independence, initiative, and discretion within established guidelines. This position assists in the strategic planning, organization, and management across multiple operational units.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Receives direction from the Field Services Manager or designee. Exercises general supervision over supervisory, professional, technical and administrative support staff through subordinate levels of supervision.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS - INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO THE FOLLOWING:

• Plan, organize, direct, review and evaluate the work of staff involved in public works operations, including building maintenance, streams, streets, streets cleaning, storm drain maintenance, signs and signals, parking lots, and trails, janitorial service for City owned facilities, and vehicle maintenance and repair directly and through subordinate levels of supervision.
• Establish and carry out division goals, objectives, work plans, reports, policies and procedures.
• Prepare division budget and staffing requirements;
• Plan, organize and direct the work of contractors;
• Responsible for the procurement of goods and services.
• Monitor operations to ensure that operating procedures are followed.
• Control the requisition of supplies, materials and equipment.
• Assist in the recruitment and placement of new employees.
• Attend public meetings and functions.
• Establish division goals and maintain exceptional working relationships.
• Maintain exceptional working relationships
• Perform related duties and responsibilities as required and other duties as assigned.
