THE POSITION

Under supervision of the Public Works Manager, the Maintenance Worker I performs entry level unskilled, semi-skilled, or skilled labor in construction, maintenance, and related service activities applied to the areas of general landscaping, grounds maintenance and street maintenance.

 TYPICAL TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Grounds Maintenance:  Operate mowers and other equipment and tools for purposes of cutting grass, trimming trees and shrubs, and planting and transplanting flowers, bulbs, shrubs, and trees.
• Storm Prevention Maintenance:  Assist in cleaning ditches, culverts, and storm drains.
• Street Maintenance: Assist in repainting of pavement markings, basic pothole, and street repair; installation and repair of street signs and markers; mixing and application of Class III pesticide materials.
• Vehicle/Equipment Maintenance:  Assist in the care, maintenance and cleaning of vehicles, tools, and equipment.
• General:  Contact residents concerning maintenance and service problems; refer complaints and requests to proper supervisory personnel. Assist supervisory personnel in preparing and maintaining proper records and logs. Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other City employees and the public using principles of good customer service.

QUALIFICATIONS

The general knowledge of basic construction methods, materials and terminology, standard hand tools, light equipment, and light vehicles; general knowledge of basic safety precautions and practices necessary in working with hand tools, light equipment, and vehicles; general knowledge of basic methods and practices involved in the care of shrubs, trees and flowers. Ability to learn technically complex construction and maintenance procedures in water systems, streets, parks and building maintenance; use hand and power tools; perform heavy manual labor for extended periods of time under inclement weather conditions; work alone or with small groups.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Possession of a valid California driver's license and ability to maintain a satisfactory driving history.

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

Completion of high school or its equivalent, or completion of a trade or vocational school.  Some directly related experience is desirable.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

• Monthly Salary: $4,855 to $6,269 per month. Placement within the range will be based upon the selected candidate’s experience and salary history.
• Health/Medical Benefit: Health/Medical Benefit: Choice of coverage with Kaiser or Blue Shield. The City pays 80% of monthly premiums at each coverage level. In lieu of medical coverage, the City will contribute $400 (employee only coverage) or $500 (employee + 1 coverage) or $600 (family coverage) in cash or a pre-tax contribution into a MissionSquare Retirement 457 deferred compensation plan.
• Dental Coverage: City-paid dental plan for employee and eligible dependents.
• Vision Care: City-paid vision plan for employee and eligible dependents.
• Retirement: CalPERS enrollment in either 2%@60 (Classic Member) or 2%@62 (PEPRA New Member)

 SELECTION

At least thirty (30) of the most highly qualified applicants meeting the minimum qualifications will be subjected to a written test.  You will be notified of your scheduled testing time and location. Those passing the written test will be invited to an oral interview.  Applicants must receive at least 70% total score on the written exam and oral interview to be placed on the eligibility list.

MAINTENANCE TRAINEE – PARKS & GROUNDS

CLASS CHARACTERISITICS:

Maintenance Trainee – Is an entry-level trainee position. Incumbents learn to perform the full scope of duties of the Maintenance I class. This class is alternately staffed with Maintenance I and incumbents may advance to the higher-level class after gaining experience and demonstrating proficiency which meet the qualifications of the higher-level class.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES (illustrative only):

• Inspect, clean, repair, and maintain City parks and trail system to ensure facilities are safe and usable; inspect, clean, and stock park restrooms; remove refuse from City garbage cans.
• Plant, cultivate, and provide upkeep for City landscapes and parks; mow lawns, replant vegetation, and prune trees, shrubs, and ground covers.
• Prepare and apply pesticides, growth regulators, and fertilizers; identify and appropriately label the containers when using these materials; document materials used.
• Paint, sandblast, or otherwise remove graffiti from public properties; paint interiors/exteriors.
• Attend technical and safety on-the-job training sessions; carry out what is learned in the classroom/tailgate training on the job; fill out accident reports if involved in an accident.
• Operate and maintain a variety of hand and power tools used in landscaping, carpentry, electrical, plumbing, concrete work, and welding activities.
• Operate and maintain various pieces of medium to heavy equipment including trucks, tractors, chippers, backhoes, skiploaders, mowers, sandblasters, and trailers.
• Inspect irrigation systems; repair and renovate the systems by rebuilding and/or installing timers, clocks, wires, pipes, joints, valves, and heads.
• Control weeds throughout the City.

MAINTENANCE I – PARKS & GROUNDS

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS:

The Maintenance I classification represents the journey-level within the Parks and Grounds Maintenance class series. Individuals within this class exhibit comprehensive proficiency in independently carrying out a spectrum of Parks & Grounds maintenance responsibilities. This entails not only performing tasks such as inspecting, cleaning, repairing, and maintaining City parks, landscape areas, and trail systems, but also making informed decisions regarding safety and usability. The Maintenance I role stands apart from Maintenance II, the lead-level in the series, as Maintenance II holds responsibility for overseeing the tasks performed by a crew engaged in parks and grounds maintenance.

StopWaste is hiring an Energy Council Program Services Specialist to work on Bay Area Regional Energy Network (BayREN) programs. The position will conduct community outreach and engage with stakeholders to make energy upgrades and electrify multifamily and single family buildings in Alameda County and the larger Bay Area. It will also work on growing and strengthening the clean energy workforce to help achieve energy and climate goals. The ideal candidate will have deep experience engaging and developing relationships with community partners. Under direct supervision, Wastewater Collection Systems Workers perform a variety of routine to skilled work in the construction, modification, maintenance, and repair of City infrastructure, including wastewater collection, stormwater and drainage, and related systems. The successful candidate will use and operate a variety of manual and power tools and light to heavy power-driven equipment to perform skilled and specialized work on drainage, collection, and related systems, and appurtenances, and performs related work as required. The City of Berkeley invites you to apply for the position of Camp Maintenance Mechanic (Non-Career Intermittent) in the Parks, Recreation and Waterfront Department! In this role, you will have the opportunity to keep our camps running smoothly by performing both routine and heavy, physical work in the construction, maintenance, repair and cleaning of camp facilities. State of California Drinking Water Treatment Certifications (Grade 1 or 2) desirable. Must possess and maintain a valid California non-commercial (Class C) driver's license, and have a satisfactory driving record. Must possess sufficient strength and stamina to lift and carry objects weighing up to 80 pounds and be able to perform sustained heavy physical labor.
