POSITION

The Daly City Public Works Maintenance Supervisor position is a general classification title for all maintenance and operations sections of the Public Works Maintenance Division. The current vacancy is within the Parks Maintenance Section of the Public Works Maintenance Division. Applicants with prior knowledge of landscape maintenance, repairs and construction, and maintenance and repair of irrigation systems are highly desired. Candidates with significant experience and demonstrated ability in related Public Works maintenance operations and supervision will also be considered.

DEFINITION

Under general direction from the Public Works Superintendent, plans, directs and supervises the work of assigned personnel within the Building Maintenance, Street Maintenance, or Motor Vehicle (Fleet) subdivisions within the Maintenance Division of the Public Works Department; and performs related duties as required.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Prepares the detailed planning, scheduling and organization of the work of assigned personnel; checks work of assigned personnel to see that work is done properly and expeditiously; confers with Public Works Superintendent on significant planned activity or deviations; prepares cost estimates as required; assists in the preparation of annual budgets, including capital improvements; assists in projecting personnel, equipment, and material needs; opens and completes work orders; maintains records concerning installations, repairs, and the condition of the buildings, infrastructure and utility systems, or vehicles being maintained; makes recommendations for improvements, additions, alterations and repairs and may arrange for and inspect work performed by outside contractors;, prepares employee performance evaluations, counsels employees, recommends disciplinary actions and commendations; conducts effective training on equipment operation, care, cleaning and maintenance; and general safety and work site safety; advises on safety precautions and instructs personnel in the technical aspects of work performed; responds to inquiries and complaints pertaining to the work of the Divisions as directed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of: Practical aspects of supervisory principles and practices including effectively maintaining a work environment that is free of discrimination and harassment; elements of work scheduling; labor and material cost estimating for construction projects; basic recordkeeping and budget procedures; standard safety procedures, including working practices and safety orders of the California Division of Industrial Safety pertinent to utility construction and maintenance; methods, tools, materials, and types and functions of equipment used; provisions of the California Vehicle Code as it applies to the loading and operation of motor vehicles; applicable Federal, State and local laws, codes and regulations.

Ability to: Supervise, schedule, train, and direct the work of personnel assigned; follow oral and written directions; prepare clear and accurate reports; prepare and maintain records; read and interpret plans and specifications; maintain inventory control, be available in an emergency for night and weekend work; operate and maintain all types of specialized equipment used in the maintenance of public buildings and infrastructure streets, and motor vehicles; perform skilled and semi-skilled tasks; organize and direct building, street, and motor vehicle maintenance projects; establish and maintain preventative maintenance programs; analyze situations effectively and develop appropriate solutions to correct problem areas, communicate with various personnel, including personnel from other City Departments, city residents, engineering consultants and industry representatives, communicate clearly and concisely with contacts both verbally and in writing, as needed, to perform one’s assignments,interact positively and cooperatively with co-workers, respond politely to customers, work as a team member, function under demanding time pressures, respond in a positive manner to supervision, and attend work and perform duties on a regular and consistent basis.

Experience: Five years of increasingly responsible experience in performing semi-skilled work in the maintenance of buildings and infrastructure, streets, or motor vehicles, or other public works projects, at least two years of which was served in a supervisory capacity.

Education: Graduation from high school or equivalent. Associate of Arts Degree or higher in related field highly desirable.

Physical Requirements: Moderate and sometimes strenuous exertion required, including sustained walking, standing, bending, kneeling, crawling, climbing, and lifting. Works in adverse weather conditions from time to time. May be exposed to dirt, noise, uneven surfaces, and/or extreme heat or cold when in the field, and may be required to sit for long periods of time using a keyboard and mouse.

License: Possession of valid California Class C Driver's License, (including acceptable driving record).

The City of Redwood City’s Parks, Recreation and Community Services (PRCS) Department is looking for people interested in working approximately 15-20 hours per week, working the special events programs operated by the Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department.  Incumbents will typically assist in setting up, monitoring, and breaking down the events all while providing excellent customer service to visitors.

Parks Maintenance Assistant

Under immediate supervision, part-time maintenance assistants performs unskilled and semiskilled tasks in the maintenance of parks and landscapes, trees, medians, facilities, streets, storm drains, water, electrical and other related duties as assigned.

This is a part-time, seasonal position with the Parks Maintenance Division and provides assistance to either the Parks and or Facilities Maintenance. It is distinguished from the Parks or Streets Maintenance Worker I positions as there are no special license requirements and it is not a flexibly staffed position.

Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

• Assist in the maintenance tasks associated with the care of grounds, landscaping, trees, facilities, parking areas, streets, water, storm drains and electrical utilities.
• Cleans and removes debris and litter from parks, restrooms, landscapes, facilities, parking lots, streets, gutters, storm drains, catch basins, drainage ditches, sidewalks, and street construction sites by shoveling, raking, sweeping, and picking up debris.
• Operates vehicles, equipment and power tools necessary to complete maintenance for the above assigned areas. If properly licensed may drive large two axle trucks as directed.
• Assists in digging holes and trenching for irrigation repairs and installation.
• Assist in loading, transporting, and unloading equipment, materials, debris, and other heavy objects related to maintenance.
• Sets up traffic control including signs and barricades, and directs traffic or acts as flag person to direct traffic around work sites.
• Helps repair and maintain fences, playground equipment, gates, doors, roofs, walks and walkways, sidewalks and gutters using hammer, saws, paint brushes and appropriate hand tools, spade, pick, hoe, shovels, tamper and jack hammer as directed.
• Assists with custodial duties throughout city facilities as needed. Duties may include restroom cleaning, emptying garbage, recycle, and compost receptacles, setting up for special events, mopping, vacuuming, floor finishing, window cleaning, etc.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Knowledge of functions, characteristics and proper use and care of common hand tools and safe work practices.

Ability to be trained in the use of supplies, tools and equipment used in in the work areas as described above in a variety of weather conditions; basic skills in following simple oral and written instructions; skills in performing manual work, lifting heavy objects up to 50 pounds; establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with other persons.

Applicants should have the ability to read, write and carry out oral and written directions, maintain cooperative work relationships and work outdoors. The applicants must posses a valid California Drivers License and have a good driving record (recent DMV printout required).

Special Requirements: Must possess and maintain a valid CALIFORNIA Class "C"Driver's License for operate in high vehicle traffic areas and construction sites; speak clearly and understandably.  Requires moderate and sometimes strenuous exertion including bending, stooping, crouching, crawling, climbing, lifting, twisting, carrying and/or handling up to one hundred (100) pounds.  Work in confined spaces and wear protective garments.  May work in conditions that require exposure to noise, odors, chemical and biological agents, gases, and contact with sanitary wastewater.  Ability to report to work at any hour of the day or night as required during a disaster or other emergency situation.  MUST maintain a thirty-minute response time to the job site when answering after hour and weekend service calls.  Shall be a second responder to support supervisors in emergencies.  Carry communication equipment after work hours.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:  Methods, materials, and equipment used in custodial maintenance.

Under general supervision, this position requires demonstrated competency and increasing independence, knowledge and ability in performing routine and special assignments in the Parks Maintenance Division.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS, FEATURES, REQUIREMENTS:

This classification is full-time position assigned to parks maintenance. Includes on call rotation and weekend rotation. Assistance to other departments in emergency and non-routine situations.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED AND RECEIVED:

Receives general supervision from Parks Maintenance Supervisors and ongoing training on a wide variety of equipment, operational rules, guidelines, procedures and methods.

IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

Performs mowing, weeding, trimming, pruning, cultivating, fertilizing, pest control, planting and cleaning of lawns, trees, plants, and parks; removes and disposes of trash and litter; maintains park and maintenance equipment, buildings and facilities; maintains irrigation systems; performs construction and demolition of park facilities, drainage, low-voltage electrical and irrigation systems for new, expanded and renovated park facilities as part of capital improvement projects; performs minor plumbing or building repair duties; operates small trucks, dump trucks, ride-on and walk-behind mowing equipment; may be required to operate heavy equipment; utilizes a wide variety of construction tools and mechanical equipment; may be required to interact with customers on site or when requested; may be required to utilize department or City-wide software applications to maintain records or perform various duties. Involves significant time walking, stooping, bending, squatting, walking, lifting heavy objects, operating hand and power tools, equipment, and vehicles on a daily basis. Experience: Maintenance Worker -- One year of full time experience in general maintenance, construction, or grounds keeping.

Licenses: Possession of a valid California Class "C" Driver's License and a good driving record.

Tasks often require considerable physical strength and stamina and may be performed in inclement weather and/or potentially hazardous conditions. Worker may be called back to work during emergencies. Performs related work as required.

CLASSIFICATION CHARACTERISTICS

Utility Maintenance Worker is the entry level to the following classification series: Building Maintenance Worker I/II, Collection System Maintenance Worker I/II, Groundskeeper/Gardener I/II, Street Maintenance Worker I/II, and Water Maintenance Worker I/II. Candidates from the Utility Maintenance Worker Employment List may be appointed in any one of several City departments. They will initially be under close supervision, performing the least skilled and most repetitive tasks while learning to use and apply the methods, materials, tools and equipment involved. Incumbents normally advance to Level II after at least two years of successful experience and demonstrating proficiency for the Level II work. 

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Work assignments may be in any one of the maintenance area programs: building/facility operation and maintenance, water/wastewater system delivery and maintenance, parks, median and grounds maintenance, and streets and sewer maintenance. Sweeps rubbish and leaves from gutters; loads and unloads trucks in a variety of situations; excavates and fills trenches and ditches; does manual work in preparing surfaces for paving, mixing cement, and breaking up paved surfaces using such tools as shovel, rake, jackhammer, tampers, and tar kettle; does manual or the more routine work of laying pipe, backfilling, and installing water meters; acts as a helper to skilled craftsworkers assisting in the more routine aspects of carpentry, plumbing, heating, minor electrical and mechanical repair, and painting including street painting; does manual park work not requiring prior knowledge or skill in gardening.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of: The purpose, safe use and maintenance of hand tools and small power equipment. General construction and maintenance methods, materials, and terminology. Safe working techniques and requirements.

Ability to: Safely and skillfully use hand tools, operate light mechanical equipment, and perform heavy manual labor. Comprehend and follow oral and written instructions and safety warnings and information. Learn to perform more skilled tasks, such as producing manual and computer-generated reports and schedules and installation and maintenance of current job-related equipment or devices. Work independently. Maintain an appropriate public service demeanor and positive customer service interactions. I: Perform sustained, strenuous manual labor; climb, lift, crawl, stoop and bend to reach work; and work outdoors in temperature extremes and inclement weather

Experience: One year, full-time, paid experience in construction, maintenance or other semi-skilled, physical work.

Education: Completion of the tenth grade. Graduation from high school or the equivalent is desirable and required to advance to Level II in the flexible classification series.

License: Possession of a valid Class C California Driver's License.
