Under immediate supervision, the Maintenance Assistant performs unskilled work in the maintenance and repair of streets, pavements, sewers, landscaping, traffic signs, and traffic signals. Duties include digging holes, trenches, and ditches. It also includes operating a wide range of hand, mechanical, and power tools, as well as a variety of light and heavy vehicles, trucks, and equipment relevant to work performed, ensuring compliance with safe working practices.

Under direction, develops, plans, organizes, coordinates, and supervises community and recreation programs; provides technical staff assistance in the field of community and recreation programming.

Under general supervision, the Maintenance Worker is assigned to the Streets and Sewers Division of the Public Works Department and is responsible for performing a variety of skilled and semi-skilled tasks and operating power-driven road maintenance or construction equipment and trucks.
Examples of duties include:
- Operation and maintenance of power-driven street, sewer, and construction equipment
- Cleaning of sewer lines and storm drains
- Performance of concrete work and other construction and street resurfacing projects
