Summary Description

Under immediate supervision performs semi-skilled to skilled maintenance, repair, and construction work assigned to the streets division; operates maintenance and construction tools and equipment; performs a variety of maintenance tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility.

Distinguishing Characteristics

This is the entry level class in the Street Maintenance Operator series. This class is distinguished from the Street Maintenance Operator II by the performance of the more routine tasks and duties assigned to workers in this series. Employees at this level are not expected to perform with the same independence of direction and judgment on matters related to established procedures and guidelines as are positions allocated to the II level. Since this class is typically used as a training class, employees may have only limited or non directly related work experience. Employees work under immediate supervision while learning job tasks.

Representative Duties

The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.

1. Handle complaints and answer questions from the public.
2. Remove blight and illegal dumps from city property such as parks, right of ways, roadways, alleys, walkways, sidewalks and refuse disposal. 
3. Remove debris, shrubbery, brush, trash, tires, appliances, electronics, and miscellaneous items.
4. Make minor adjustments on service equipment; maintain tools and equipment in working order.
5. Abates graffiti.
6. Maintain logs of daily activities.
7. Assist in other areas as needed.
8. Perform related duties as required.
9. Repair and replace street surfaces, sidewalks, curbs, and gutters including back filling trenches and evacuations.
10. Perform the maintenance, repair, construction, and installation work of streets, storm drain, parking lots, street lights, traffic striping, and traffic control signs and signals.
11. Remove hazards from the roadway and other public rights of way.
12. Operate a variety of motorized equipment and specialized maintenance equipment.
13. Perform repaving, patching, overlaying, chuck hole, and crack sealing repair of asphalt.
14. Perform underground service alert locating, marking and notification.
15. Lay out and install traffic signs and pavement markings.
16. Repair and maintain storm drain lift stations.
17. Conduct traffic count surveys.
18. Maintain storm detention ponds, including cleaning, repairing, and spraying weeds.
19. Respond to hazardous materials spills.

QUALIFICATIONS

The following generally describes the knowledge and ability required to enter the job and/or be learned within a short period of time in order to successfully perform the assigned duties.

Knowledge of:

Principles and practices of maintenance and repair activities related to area of assignment.

THE OPPORTUNITY

The City of Mill Valley is seeking an enthusiastic and dependable individual to join our team as a Maintenance Worker I in the Facilities Division. This position will be assigned to the Community Center and Aquatics & Fitness Center where you will play a vital role in keeping our recreational spaces safe, clean, and welcoming for all visitors.

The Maintenance Worker I classification is designed for individuals who are beginning or growing their careers in facilities maintenance. Employees in this role start under general supervision while learning a wide range of facility maintenance tasks. At the Community Center/Aquatics & Fitness Center, you will assist with building maintenance, respond to service requests, work directly with staff and the public, and support the operation of key amenities including the pool, spa, and kitchen facilities. Essential Duties (include but are not limited to): 

• Inspect Community Center/Aquatics & Fitness Center facilities regularly for safety issues, repair needs, and custodial concerns
• Troubleshoot and complete basic electrical, plumbing, carpentry, and painting tasks including fixture replacement, minor repairs, and surface preparation
• Perform custodial work such as trash removal, cleaning, vacuuming, window washing, and moving or rearranging equipment or furniture
• Perform minor maintenance on building systems including heating and air conditioning units, flooring, gutters, and downspouts
• Assist with room and event setup as needed.
• Respond to maintenance service requests from departments and address public concerns related to facility upkeep
• Collaborate with outside contractors when required
• Maintain accurate logs of maintenance activities, repairs, and supply needs
• Participate in on call duties during critical incidents or major events when assigned
• Maintain pool and spa operations including safe chemical handling, equipment care, and minor part replacement
• Perform minor repairs on kitchen equipment including refrigerators, freezers, stoves, and similar appliances
• Perform other related duties as assigned

What You'll Do

• Support the Police Department by ensuring that critical systems and hardware are working smoothly. Exercise problem solving as needed to ensure minimal impact to operations.

The educational/experience requirements can be satisfied in one of the following ways: 

- Equivalent to an associate’s degree or have completed 60 semester or 90 quarter units at an accredited college or university in business information systems in computer science or related field, plus five years experience in management information systems. Some assignments may require specialized systems experience such as HTML, CSS, Javascript and XML, PHP, and structured query language (SQL).

- A technology certificate from an accredited college or trade school in information technology, computer applications, web technologies, computer information systems, application development database design, programming, technology project management, or related field and five years of experience in private-sector or public-sector positions in information technology, including systems analysis work and development, system integration, or project management.
 

- Equivalent to a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with a degree in computer science or a related field, and two years of progressively responsible experience comparable to that of an Information Technology Analyst I in the City of Mountain View. Some assignments may require specialized systems experience such as HTML, CSS, Javascript and XML, PHP, and structured query language (SQL).

Highly Desirable:  

• Possession of Advanced Microsoft, VMWare Certified Professional (VSP), CCNP and/or LINUX certifications. 
• Experience in radio communication systems
• Experience in a Public Safety environment supporting applications like CAD/RMS/Mobile data computer systems.

• The control point for this position is $152,958. The full range for this position is $122,367 - $183,550 and the full range is posted to comply with California law. That said, successful candidates can realistically expect a starting offer between $122,367 and $144,000, depending on qualifications. No matter where the starting offer falls, employees will have the opportunity to get annual merit increases for stellar performance.

A Dispatcher I is a civilian employee of the Police Department who performs a variety of tasks in the Department’s Support Services Division. The Dispatcher I receives incoming calls for police assistance and response; acts as a primary Dispatcher when appropriate; performs a variety of general support duties related to police communications; completes a wide variety of general clerical duties.

Examples of Duties:

The Dispatcher I duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Answer emergency and non-emergency police related phone calls, help prioritize requests for service based upon available resources, receive radio requests and handle accordingly, type, process and file a wide variety of reports and materials including memos, letters, complaints, declarations, warrants, citations, crime and traffic reports.  Assists Department personnel and the public in person and by phone performing record checks, collecting fees and mailing requested reports to outside agencies in accordance with established regulations.   A Dispatcher I may be assigned to work various hours, shifts, holidays, weekends and overtime.

Typical Qualifications:

• Salary: $6,681 - $8,612 per month.

THE POSITION

The City is currently seeking General Maintenance Workers. This temporary position works with the City’s maintenance staff to perform: unskilled labor in the parks and landscape medians, street and sidewalk maintenance, street sign maintenance, and fleet building maintenance. Duties include, but are not limited to: raking, emptying trash cans and litter removal, irrigation repair, weeding, edging, street sign maintenance and graffiti removal. Work is closely supervised; work methods are explained in specific terms and work is subject to frequent review.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES

• Knowledge of methods, materials, and equipment used in landscaping, street and sidewalk maintenance, and building maintenance, as well as safety practices and precautions to be used in work.
• Skill in operating hand and power tool equipment such as rakes, pick and shovel, etc.
• Ability to work outdoors in all weather and to follow oral and written instructions. Intermittently, sit while studying or listening to training; bend, squat, climb, kneel and twist when performing maintenance, repair, or installation tasks; perform simple and power grasping, pushing, pulling, and fine manipulation; and lift or carry heavy weights up to 90 lbs.; work in conditions of various outdoor exposure.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Additionally, major thoroughfares coursing through our fully developed community make traffic management a vital duty of all patrol officers. Overall, the department has strong opportunities for specialty assignments, including: K9, investigations, narcotics enforcement, traffic, SWAT/HNT and POP. Patrol teams enjoy a rotating 4/12 plan or a fixed 4/10 schedule in specialty assignments.

The City realizes the diversity of the community and therefore upon approval, the City pays officers a bilingual stipend. Our officers continually strive to be the best and achieve high standards; they receive a 5% incentive for achieving their Intermediate POST certificate and 10% incentive for achieving their advanced certificate. Starting September 1, 2024, Menlo Park police officers with at least one year of local service are eligible for longevity pay based on their total years as a California peace officer. Credited time includes all years served in Menlo Park plus half of any years served at other California agencies.

The City has new desktop and laptop computers in place for employees. The City already has Crime Analysis and Traffic Analysis software systems in place. A new handheld citations system for traffic has recently been launched. The City also implemented a citywide GIS system, document imaging system, and Intranet, which are available to all staff members. Additionally, we have placed laptops in all patrol cars in order to facilitate timely report writing and response to calls for service.
