ABOUT THE POSITION

The City of Redwood City, Police Department invites you to apply for the position of Administrative Secretary. The incumbent will perform a variety of confidential and complex secretarial and administrative duties as the court liaison as well as providing support to the Investigations Unit.

Typical duties may include the following: interact professionally and effectively with judges, district attorneys, defense attorneys, court personnel, law enforcement personnel, outside agencies, and members of the public; provide administrative and operational support for court-related functions and law enforcement investigations within the Police Department; prepare, process, maintain, and distribute court documents, reports, subpoenas, warrants, confidential criminal justice information, and related records in accordance with department policies, legal requirements, and confidentiality standards; serve as a liaison between the Police Department, courts, the District Attorney’s Office, and other agencies regarding scheduling, case information, filings, warrants, subpoenas, records, procedural matters, and time-sensitive deadlines; ensure criminal cases are adequately prepared for court proceedings by reviewing, analyzing, and organizing reports, citations, case files, digital evidence, body-worn camera footage, surveillance video, photographs, audio recordings, and related investigative materials for completeness, accuracy, and compliance with legal, statutory, and departmental requirements; respond to complaints and requests for information regarding department procedures, court processes, instructions, precedents, and regulations; research, compile, and analyze data for special projects and reports; initiate, maintain, and audit files, records, and databases related to court operations, case management, evidence, warrants, and other department records; assist with records retention and compliance with applicable laws, policies, and confidentiality requirements; maintain and update manuals, policies, and resource materials; monitor compliance with court orders, subpoenas, and legal deadlines; exercise independent judgment and discretion while working in a fast-paced environment involving sensitive and confidential information; provide backup support to other Police Department administrative staff as needed; and perform related duties as assigned. The Department: 

The Community Development Department strives to enhance the community’s safety, welfare, quality of life, and economic opportunities by providing advanced planning, development review, permitting and inspection services, as well as administration of programs related to affordable housing. 

The Community Development Department consists of three divisions: Planning, Building, and Housing and Community Services. The Department guides the ongoing physical development of the community, which includes long range land use planning, review of new development proposals and construction to ensure that it conforms to the standards of the City and State and ensures the provision of affordable housing with the City of Santa Clara. The delivery of high-quality professional services, including the enhancement and streamlining of the development permit process, and forging partnerships to provide housing services to lower income members of the community, are primary objectives of the Department. The Department acts as an advisor to the City’s decision-makers in these areas and carries out the policies of the City Council. 

The Department demands for quality communications continues to increase, especially as the list of high visibility development projects grows in Santa Clara. The department is seeking a dedicated Communications Coordinator to handle outreach and engagement efforts and be a liaison to the City’s Communications Team.

The Position: 

The incumbent provides high-level public information and community outreach services that require in-depth knowledge of public sector communications, website content and graphic design, and experience in managing and implementing creative and innovative promotions and projects.

This role is essential to centralizing the department’s communication efforts and ensuring that both internal and public-facing messages are strategic, consistent, and impactful.
 
The Communications Coordinator will be housed in the Technology and Communications Team and will be supervised by the Assistant Director. The Communications Coordinator will work across all divisions and will not only help streamline communications related to key initiatives and projects but also serve as an internal consultant, helping staff develop clear, effective messaging across all channels. This will enable the department to better meet increasing demands from the City Manager’s Office for improved web content, newsletters, and outreach efforts, while also promoting the department’s key initiatives and projects to a broader audience.

Under general direction, the Communications Coordinator coordinates and maintains content on the Department's website and intranet; implements and supports internal and external communication efforts; and coordinates social media and video communication activities. Incumbents may function as a supervisor, or an individual contributor, depending on the department or assignment.

A Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university with a degree in English, Journalism, Communications, Advertising, Marketing, Public Relations, or closely related field.

Acceptable Substitution: 

Additional full time professional experience in public relations, public information, or other related experience may be substituted for the education on a year-for-year basis up to two years with one year full time experience being equal to 30 semester (45 quarter) units of college.

Desirable Qualifications: 

• Experience working in the public sector communications, press releases, social media platforms, website and graphic design, and analytics research is desirable.

• Experience in managing and implementing creative promotions and projects is desirable.

Other Requirements:  

• May be required to work odd and unusual hours in the performance of duties and during emergency situations.

POSITION:
This classification is distinguished from all other classes by its responsibility in carrying out day-to-day digital communications functions and supporting the City’s public information program. POLICE OFFICER - Academy Graduate - $8,419 to $11,416 per month (up to $13,128 with incentives)

Academy Graduate candidates with an honorable discharge may be credited with up to 15 semester units for a minimum of 3 years of active duty in the U.S. Armed Services (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard).

ABOUT THE POSITION

Under general supervision, a Police Officer is responsible to perform law enforcement and crime prevention work; to control traffic flow and enforce State and local traffic regulations; to perform investigative work; to participate in and provide support and assistance to special department crime prevention and enforcement programs. This is the entry level classification in the professional police series requiring sworn peace officer status.

Examples of Essential Duties (include but are not limited to):

•  Patrol the City in radio-equipped car or on foot.
•  Answer calls for the protection of life and property, and the enforcement of city, county, and state laws.
• Conduct both preliminary and follow-up investigations of disturbances, prowlers, burglaries, thefts, hold-ups, vehicle accidents, death, and other criminal incidents.
• Patrol the City and respond to calls related to traffic incidents and any other required emergencies.
• Observe, monitor, and control routine and unusual traffic conditions.
• Assist and advise motorists and enforce traffic safety laws.
• Make arrests as necessary.
• Interview victims, complainants, and witnesses.
• Interrogate suspects; gather and preserve evidence.

THE POSITION

The Police Dispatcher/Clerk is a non-sworn technical and complex clerical support classification associated with law enforcement support services assigned in the Town Police Department.  Police Dispatcher/Clerks learn and perform a variety of responsible records management, communications and dispatching duties for emergency and non-emergency calls for service. 

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES

Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

• Dispatches police officers to calls for service
• Provides assistance, information and directions to non-emergency callers including but not limited to police, fire, paramedic, animal control and public utilities calls for service, forwards non-emergency calls to proper personnel or departments
• Maintains awareness of field unit activities; communicates with field units through radio in accordance with Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regulations; maintains status and location of units on patrol
• Retrieves information from State and National computer networks regarding wanted persons, stolen property, vehicle registration, stolen vehicles and other related information
• Enters call information into computer systems; logs and completes call forms, maintains records of calls for service and self-initiated officer activities
• Assists the public at the front counter; provides information and responds to general inquiries
• Performs other related duties as assigned
