This internship is offered as part of a Regional Internship Partnership designed to introduce current students and recent college graduates to local municipal government. The City of Saratoga participates in this program with the goal of connecting a diverse student population to public sector work, providing meaningful hands-on experience that supports both personal and professional growth.

Position Description

The City Manager Department has one part-time, paid summer internship opportunity (up to 20 hours per week). This is a single position that provides exposure across multiple functions within the department, giving the selected intern broad exposure to municipal operations rather than a narrow focus on one specialty. The internship runs for up to 12 weeks, and the start and end dates can be arranged around the selected candidate’s college summer break schedule.

The workload will balance supporting daily municipal operations with contributing to special projects. The intern will receive assignments and work direction from staff within the department.  

Administrative Analyst. The intern will support the planning and delivery of community programs such as the Youth in Government program and City-led events. Duties include scheduling, vendor coordination, on-site event assistance, research on municipal best practices, and data tracking.

City Clerk. The intern will assist with the preparation and coordination of City Council and commission meetings, including agenda compilation, minutes, and document management. Responsibilities also include supporting public records requests and ensuring compliance with open meeting laws and transparency requirements.

Public Affairs and Community Engagement Officer. The intern will help draft newsletters, website content, and social media posts, and will support event promotion, marketing materials, and community outreach campaigns. Additional work may include contributing to the annual State of the City report and video content produced with City Council.

The City of Brisbane will be sponsoring a History internship with the City Manager's Office. Our internships are project-oriented and designed to give college students a good general overview of future employment opportunities and current issues in the Public Sector. The History Intern will work closely with staff in the City Manager’s Office to help preserve and protect the City’s History Collection, ensuring materials are properly safeguarded and prepared in the event of a disaster. This role includes digitizing and photographing historical items, accurately cataloging them in the City’s archival system, and supporting ongoing records management efforts. The intern will also collaborate with the City Council History Subcommittee to research, plan, and develop future exhibits for the Library’s History Room, helping make the City’s rich history accessible and engaging for the community.

City Clerk Intern project for 2026:

• Records Management – Assist in project oversight of our records management project, create innovative best practices to implement the records retention schedule and policy, and support the daily records management tasks in the City Clerk’s Office

The Public Works Program Manager leads and supports a team of engineering and technical staff while overseeing the Engineering Division within the Public Works Agency. This role is responsible for directing complex engineering programs; reviewing and evaluating technical work products, methods, and procedures; and ensuring all activities comply with applicable federal, state, and local regulations. The Equity and Belonging Manager will work with the Chief Equity Officer in the development and management of innovative and effective strategies to advance the ORSJ’s vision and day-to-day operations. The Equity and Belonging Manager may provide direct and indirect supervision over lower level supervisory, professional, technical, and clerical employees and contractors.
 
The Equity and Belonging Manager will optimize and support the functions of the ORSJ, which include but are not limited to the following:

• Collaborate with the County’s Chief Equity Officer and other equity-focused staff to normalize and institutionalize the implementation of an equity lens to improve relationships, decision-making, structures, and systems of County operation and delivery of services.
• Consult with and advise management, multi-disciplinary staff, community organizations, providers, external agencies, and other stakeholders on complex matters concerning efforts to advance just and fair governance and improving life outcomes for all populations.
• Sustain and improve the operations of an interdepartmental Core Equity Team and its committees to advance their annual action plans.

• Design, implement, promote, deliver, and evaluate programs and tools designed to advance equity, including staff development, community engagement and partnership, organizational assessments, policy and systems changes, public information, and individual and group trainings.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:
Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to qualify is:

• Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in public policy, sociology, education, ethnic studies, public relations, social work, public health, public administration, or a related field, includes trainings and education specific to issues related to racial and social equity. 
• Experience: Five years of experience in the administration of community, public policy, educational, or social and racial justice programs, including at least three years in a supervisory level AND life experience related to interacting with inequitable systems that can provide an integral perspective to the position.

Demonstrated track record of success engaging with underserved and marginalized communities, and experience in making transformational changes to advance equity is required.

License: Possession and maintenance of a valid Class C California Driver's License. Possession of Certification as Building Official by International Code Council (ICC) is required within one (1) year of appointment. Possession of a Certificate of Registration as a professional engineer in the State of California is desirable.

ABOUT THE TEAM 
The Economic Development team is a small, but might group that consists of a Director and Manager dedicated to strengthening and diversifying the local economy in Gilroy. The team focuses on business attraction, retention, expansion, and strategic partnerships that enhance the city’s economic vitality. Working closely with internal departments, community stakeholders, and regional partners, the team plays a central role in shaping initiatives that support sustainable growth. As an intern, you will work directly alongside leadership, gaining insight into how economic development strategy is crafted and executed at the municipal level.

WORK SCHEDULE 
Internships can start as early as May 26, 2026, and end as late as September 30, 2026. This paid internship is offered at 15 - 25 hours per week with flexible scheduling. The office start and end date of the internship will be determined at the time of hire. Work hours are generally Monday – Friday between 8:00am – 5:00pm. 

WHAT YOU WILL DO: 

• Conduct economic, demographic, and market data analysis 
• Research industry trends, business climate conditions, and development opportunities 
• Support business program development and evaluation 
• Lease tracking and economic data management
• Support community engagement and outreach initiatives
• Project coordination and administrative support
• Assist with special strategic initiatives as assigned
