LITERACY ASSOCIATE – CENTRAL SANTA ROSA LIBRARY

40 HOURS PER WEEK – FULL TIME

 
We are seeking a customer service driven professional with excellent communication skills to join our team as an Adult Literacy Associate. This is an exciting opportunity to work with a group of dedicated professionals who are helping to change the literacy landscape in Sonoma County. This position is part of the Adult Literacy department located in the downtown Central Santa Rosa Library. Spanish/English bilingual skills are highly preferred.

Under direction of the Adult Services Administrator and the Supervising Literacy Program Coordinator, this position coordinates and administers tutor services for the Adult Literacy Services Program (ALS), recruits and provides orientations, training and in-service workshops to tutors for various adult literacy programs, and provides on-going coaching and support for tutors.
 
TYPICAL TASKS include, but are not limited to:

• Organizes, conducts and evaluates orientations, trainings and in-service workshops for tutors of adult learners; organizes conversation classes and determines the schedule and use of the student computer. 
• Recruits, selects, supervises, supports and encourages tutors; plans and implements methods to both recruit and retain tutors.
• Provides tutors with all instructional resources and materials needed to work with the student and provides ongoing support to the tutor for the duration of their service.
• Plans and organizes events in support of the Sonoma County Library adult literacy programs; participates in public meetings.
• Plans and implements outreach methods for the recruitment of volunteer tutors such as providing information on our program to newspapers, radio stations (PSA), and sending mailers to service and business groups; follows-up on recruitment efforts.
• Maintains the literacy library with relevant materials for the ALS programs.

 
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
 
Education: Equivalent to graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in education, public administration or related fields. Experience: A combination of education and experience that creates an understanding of adult illiteracy. Generally, this would be achieved by two (2) years of administrative or programmatic experience including one year of library or literacy experience.  Experience working with adults in an educational setting. Spanish bilingual skills preferred.
 
SALARY RANGE:               $35.20/hour to $43.96/hour

The Superior Court of California, County of Alameda is accepting applications for the position of Courtroom Clerk I. Under general supervision, the Courtroom Clerk I records and prepares minutes of all types of court proceedings; resolves workflow and other technical and procedural problems within the courtroom; enters and retrieves information from automated and manual record keeping systems; and performs other related duties as assigned.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES

This is the trainee and entry-level class in the Courtroom Clerk series. The Courtroom Clerk I receives formalized and on-the-job training in the techniques and procedures of courtroom work. Progression to Courtroom Clerk II requires demonstration of proficiency in functioning independently in a variety of courtroom settings and in performing the full range of duties expected of a Courtroom Clerk.

A new eligibility list will be established to fill Courtroom Clerk I vacancies at various court locations. Courtroom Clerks may be assigned or reassigned to various locations within the County and work between the hours of 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., as determined by the business needs of the Court.

Example of Duties
NOTE: The following are duties performed by employees in this classification; however, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Each individual in this classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed.

1. Accurately records official minutes of court proceedings in a timely manner; prepares minutes, commitments, orders, judgments, abstracts, rulings and notices; and records appearances of court appointed counsel, medical examiners and expert witnesses.
2. Oversees courtroom operations to ensure that appropriate personnel and parties are present and that the courtroom is ready for business; and calls the courtroom to order as needed.
3. Impanels jury; calls roll; records challenges and proceedings during jury selection; documents jury services; ensures that attorneys have paid jury and court reporter fees; announces charges and jury verdicts; polls jury; and takes charge of the jury in the absence of a bailiff or court attendant; swears witnesses; and administers oaths.
4. Receives, records, marks, secures and maintains control of evidence, including weapons, drugs, hazardous material and other valuable items during court proceedings.
5. Submits requests for interpreters and court reporters; and verifies their appearances and payment vouchers.
6. Provides notice of court action, including issuing notices, rulings, orders and judgments as directed by judicial officer; prepares written correspondence and provides other assistance to judicial officer as needed; assists attorneys, court staff and the public in person and/or by phone and email, including setting hearings as needed; and processes documents.
7. Distributes and posts court calendars; gathers and prepares all files and data pertinent to cases on calendar for presentation to court at proper time; maintains appropriate tickler files; sorts, copies, files and retrieves documents from case files; and images documents as needed when court is not in session.
8. Maintains and coordinates calendars; consults with attorneys, judge and others regarding calendar continuances for pretrial motions, hearings, trials and other calendar matters.
9. Participates in training to ensure competency in providing services in all case types; and assists in cross-training co-workers as needed.
10. Provides coverage for courtroom clerks in departments and locations other than primary assigned as needed.
11. Assists in the Clerk's Offices as needed when court is not in session.
12. Operates electronic equipment such as communication, recording and duplicating devices when required.
13. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
Option I

Experience:

The equivalent to two years of full-time experience as a Legal Processing Assistant with the Superior Court of California, County of Alameda.

or Option II

Education:

Possession of an Associate of Arts or Associate of Science degree or equivalent to two years of college coursework with 60 semester units or 90 quarter units from an accredited college or university.

And

Experience:

The equivalent to two years of full-time increasingly responsible clerical experience in a banking, court, education, health care, law enforcement, legal, probation or social services environment.

Additional qualifying work experience as described above may substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis. One year (2080 hours) of additional qualifying work experience will be considered equivalent to 30 semester units/45 quarter units.

Knowledge of modern office practices and procedures, including filing, operation of standard office equipment and personal computers and business correspondence; English usage, grammar, spelling, vocabulary and punctuation; and basic math and record keeping systems.  

Ability to record minutes of court proceedings; write legibly and speak understandably; listen carefully to note pertinent information for court records; administer oaths and affirmations; understand, explain and apply specific statutes, codes, laws, regulations and procedures; type at a speed of 35 net words per minute from a clear copy; remain calm in a highly demanding environment; organize, prioritize and coordinate multiple tasks; maintain flexibility; establish and maintain working relationships with the public, attorneys, staff and others; communicate in a tactful and professional manner; locate, identify and correct technical inaccuracies; enter data into a computer; work independently with minimal supervision; meet deadlines and complete tasks in a timely manner; calculated fees and fines; and maintain confidentiality.

This position includes a one-year probationary period. Employment is contingent upon successful completion of fingerprint check and the provision of appropriately identifying documents to certify eligibility to work in the United States.

The Office Technician I/II position at the Probation Office performs a wide variety of specialized technical duties and provides information and assistance to the public   regarding departmental policies, procedures and laws. The City is seeking a Division Manager to manage all services and activities in the Safety Division of the Human Resources Department. The County of Yuba is recruiting for both Extra-Help and Full-Time Juvenile Corrections Officers I/II,  in an effort to fill current vacancies and establish an eligibility list. These positions are located on the Tri-County Youth Rehabilitation Campus which falls under the Juvenile Institutions Division of the Yuba County Probation Department. The primary responsibilities of this flexibly staffed position are to: provide care, custody, supervision, and control of youth housed in the secured detention facilities while they are pending legal action or serving a post adjudication commitment; ensure and sustain a safe and secure environment for youth; and coordinate counseling and behavior modification activities associated with the operation of the facilities.

 

About Detention Services & Yuba County:

Our Department believes people can change and we can be instrumental in supporting that change.  We are  a small workplace family that supports one another to accomplish our mission and allow our team members to live full lives outside the workplace. Our Campus provides youth detention services to the communities of Yuba, Sutter, and Colusa Counties as well as several contract counties through our Camp Singer program.  We operate 24 hours a day, 365 days per year, and includes the Tri-County Juvenile Hall, Secure Housing Unit, and Maxine Singer Youth Guidance Center (Camp Singer), under a Joint Powers Agreement between the three counties. Our Department is the administrative agency responsible for the management and daily operation of the facility. The shared goal of facility staff is to provide youth with support and tools that will assist them with successfully reintegrating back into the community.  Staff are provided with state mandated relevant training, which includes youth trauma; crisis management; cultural competence; mental health awareness; sexual abuse and harassment; and proper use of force.

A major function of the Housing Department is its work as a funder. The Department utilizes numerous financing vehicles to bring new affordable housing to fruition and rehabilitate older affordable housing. The Department also funds grants for nonprofits to develop and provide social services, homeless response programs, and community infrastructure. Additional grants support Fair Housing policies, place-based neighborhood efforts, and meal programs for low-income seniors.
The Department oversees a range of other critical programs and initiatives, including rent control and stabilization programs for apartments and mobilehomes, and the City's Ellis Act Ordinance that protects the City's supply of affordable rental housing. And, working in partnership with other City departments and agencies, the Housing Department works to ensure the City has a variety of housing options in every neighborhood.

The Energy Department operates San José Clean Energy (SJCE), San José's Community Choice Energy program. SJCE has provided residents and businesses with cleaner electricity at lower rates than PG&E since February 2019. The Community Energy Department is dedicated to creating a healthier, more sustainable future for our community and future generations. SJCE interns have performed substantive work for the Account Management and Marketing, Power Resources, and Regulatory and Legislative divisions. Interns develop professional skills and relationships and have a direct impact on the San José community.

 

The City of Brisbane is recruiting for a part-time Office Assistant for the Human Resources Department. Under general supervision, provides a variety of office support activities, which may include word processing, photocopying, scanning electronic documents, data entry and organization, telephone and counter reception, receipt of payments, record keeping, report preparation and filing; and performs related work as required. Example of Duties: (Illustrative Only)

• Establishes and maintains office files, following an established filing system; researches and compiles information from such files; purges files as required.

• Prepares correspondence, reports, forms, receipts, warrants, vouchers, work orders, and specialized documents
• Acts as receptionist; receives and screens visitors and telephone calls; takes messages, directs the caller to the proper office or person, and/or provides factual information regarding City and departmental activities and functions
• Enters, edits, updates, and retrieves data from narrative reports or spreadsheets and prepares periodic or special reports, following established formats and menus; may perform production data entry.

• Attends to a variety of office administrative details, such as keeping informed of departmental activities, transmitting information, ordering and coordinating supply orders, and arranging for equipment purchase and maintenance.
• Processes and distributes incoming and outgoing mail for the office or department.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge of:

• Standard office practices and procedures, including filing and the use of standard office equipment.
• Business letter writing and the standard format for reports and correspondence.
• Computer applications related to the work, including word processing and basic spreadsheet applications.
• Record keeping and filing principles and practices.
• Techniques for dealing effectively with the public and City staff, in person and over the telephone.

 

Skill in:

• Performing a wide variety of office support duties requiring the use of independent judgment.

• Interpreting and implementing policies, procedures, and computer applications related to the department or organizational unit to which assigned.

• Composing correspondence and reports independently or from brief instructions.
• Using English effectively to communicate in person, over the telephone, and in writing.

• Filing with speed and accuracy.

• Using initiative and independent judgment within established procedural guidelines and written directions.

• Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work.

• Entering data into standard computer format with speed and accuracy sufficient to perform assigned work.
• Completing tasks while being detail oriented.

 

Education and Experience: Equivalent to graduation from high school and two years of responsible office support, secretarial, or general clerical experience.  Experience in dealing with the public and working in a public agency setting is desirable.

 

Physical Demands:  Must possess mobility to work in a standard office setting and to use standard office equipment, including a computer; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone.

 

SALARY AND HOURS: $29.23 – $30.64 – $32.17 – $33.78 - $35.49 per hour. Paid sick leave benefit available. Appointments are generally made at the first step in this range.
