Class Characteristics
Deputy Director of Public Works – City Engineer is a Deputy Director level engineering classification responsible for overseeing the City’s engineering functions and performing a wide variety of engineering duties requiring independent judgement and initiative in prioritizing, scheduling, assigning and coordinating work. This class requires registration as a professional engineer. This class is distinguished from all other engineering classes by its supervisory and administrative responsibilities over a wide range of duties as well as the requirement to perform the more complex engineering and project management assignments. Assignments and projects may be long-term or may constitute a major portion of a continuous or comprehensive engineering or construction program. Typically assigned functional areas include private development review and plan checking, oversight of regulatory compliance (e.g., Municipal Regional Permit [NPDES], Cal-OSHA, SWRCB/RWQCB non-utility related orders), waste franchise, Sierra Point Lighting & Landscape District, and Capital Improvement Program.

Supervision Received and Exercised:

Receives general direction from the Public Works Department Head.

Provides general supervision to engineering, maintenance, and administrative support staff.

• Recommends and assists in development and implementation of departmental policies, goals, and objectives.

• Reviews and prepares specifications and obtains bids for construction and maintenance projects; accepts or rejects such specifications and bids; verifies computations, plans, specifications, and estimates for public works facility’s projects; reviews and signs engineering drawings and land record maps.  
• Evaluates and applies for grants; provides for administration and oversight of reporting requirements.
• Conducts negotiations on engineering matters and accepts or rejects change order requests related to contracts; addresses contractor claims.

• Prepares fee assessments and agenda reports.
• Develops record maintenance systems, procedures, and training necessary for maintaining effective liaison with other City departments.  
• Serves as department head in the absence of the director, including attending and participating in City Council, community and board and commission meetings.

There is currently one (1) full-time, regular hire Civil Engineer (Engineering) vacancy.

The Senior Civil Engineer (CE) plans, manages, and coordinates the engineering program. Using broad parameters of departmental policy guidelines, this position exercises substantial initiative, judgment, and expertise to meet program and project outcomes. The Senior Civil Engineer creates the scope on large civil engineering projects with complex budgets and timelines, integrating numerous elements that significant stakeholder involvement and sensitivity. This position provides direction and mentorship to more junior staff and oversees both technical and administrative work performed by their staff and ensures that projects are completed efficiently and effectively for the public good. Informing the public and Board of Supervisors, selecting consultants, preparing contract documents, reviewing project plans and specifications prepared by consultants, and administering contracts during construction are performed by the Senior Civil Engineer.

Signing bonus:

In addition to a competitive compensations package, new, full-time, regular hire Senior Civil Engineer are eligible to receive a $10,000.00 signing bonus which will be split into two equal payments: 50% at time of hire (i.e. first paycheck) and the remaining 50% after successful completion of their probationary period.

Hybrid schedule:

The Department of Public Works has embraced a hybrid work schedule that considers that some duties of this position may be performed remotely. However, the successful candidate must be able to report to County facilities for meetings, work assignments, and/or disaster service work upon short notice, as needed and deemed appropriate. ABOUT THE POSITION

The City of Gilroy is recruiting for a full-time Accounting Assistant I in the Finance Department. What You’ll Do

The Senior Engineer supervises and participates in the conduct of complicated engineering planning, design, and investigation activities.

Some duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Supervise and participate in the development of designs, plans, specifications, and estimates for the construction of public works projects related to the WWTP.
• Coordinate with contractors, construction managers, construction inspectors, and the design engineers to resolve issues during construction.

Utilities Maintenance Worker I:

This is the entry level class in the Utilities Maintenance Worker series. This is the journey level in the Utilities Maintenance Worker series. This class differs from Utilities Maintenance Worker I in that incumbents perform more complex maintenance duties including working independently, exercising judgment, and operating the full range of tools and mechanical equipment related to a specific assignment. The Utilities Maintenance Worker II may also be expected to assist in the oversight and training of less experienced personnel. To assist in Wastewater Plant operations and maintenance involving plant process and control, preventative maintenance to include equipment repairs, laboratory procedures.  The purpose of this recruitment is to fill a current vacancy at the Water Pollution Control Facility, as well as establish an eligibility list for future vacancies.

Candidates with experience working around mechanical equipment, performing routine maintenance, monitoring treatment processes, or supporting wastewater treatment operations are highly desirable.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Assist in the operation of the Water Pollution Control Facility to ensure compliance with State regulations. Interpret alarms, meters, gauges, SCADA system and test results to determine process and control criteria.  Perform routine maintenance and repair work on pumps, valves, Ultraviolet Disinfection equipment and filtration equipment.  Participate in ongoing preventative maintenance program and accurately maintain and compile records and reports.  Work weekends and holidays as assigned.  Regular and consistent attendance required. 

OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS 

Follow all safety precautions and regulations.  Serve in a stand-by status after regular working hours and respond to emergency callouts.  Perform related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Water Pollution Control Operator-in-Training

Education: High School diploma or equivalent, supplemented by training or coursework in the areas of chemistry, biology or related wastewater operations.

Experience: One (1) year of experience in handling mechanical equipment and tools.

License or Certificate: Required upon hire, possession of a valid California Driver's license.  Must obtain an Operator-in-Training certificate, issued by the California State Water Resources Control Board within two (2) months of appointment to this classification.
 

Possession of a Grade I Wastewater Treatment Plant Operators certificate, issued by the California State Water Resources Control Board is required within two (2) years of employment.

Water Pollution Control Operator I

Education: High School diploma or equivalent, supplemented by training or coursework in the areas of chemistry, biology or related wastewater operations.

Key Responsibilities

The City of Brisbane's Public Works Department will be sponsoring two summer internships this year. Our internships are project-oriented and designed to give college students a good general overview of future employment opportunities and current issues in the Public Sector.  You will have the opportunity for exposure to various areas of City Administration during your internship and to network with fellow interns and participate in professional development activities in San Mateo County and/or Santa Clara County.

Projects for 2026 include:

• Public Works (Engineering & Operations Support) – Provide support to the City’s Public Works Department across engineering, development review, and capital project delivery. Primary assignment will focus on documenting and improving development review processes, including application completeness and interdepartmental coordination. Secondary assignments may include assisting with capital improvement program tracking, permit review analysis, and evaluation of asset management systems to support more efficient service delivery.
