The Department of Public Works is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Road Equipment Operator I.

The Road Equipment Operator performs construction and maintenance of roadways, creeks, bridges, channels, associated landscape areas, storm drains, and sewers using bulldozers, large loaders, rollers, and mowers. Road Equipment Operators also operate medium and light duty equipment and heavy-duty trucks used to transport equipment and materials. Additionally, Road Equipment Operators make minor adjustments and emergency repairs to equipment and perform road maintenance work involving manual labor as needed.

 

Examples Of Duties

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: 

• Operate heavy road maintenance and construction equipment, including graders, bulldozers, large loaders, backhoes, hydraulic excavators, rollers and mowers.
• Operate medium and light duty equipment and all types of trucks used to transport equipment and materials.
• Service and make minor adjustments and emergency repairs to equipment.
• Prepare records and reports.
• Perform general road maintenance worker duties as necessary.
• Direct the work of a crew in the absence of the Road Equipment Supervisor as necessary.
• Assist in training subordinate personnel in equipment operation.
• Perform related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Licensure/Certification: 

• Possession and maintenance of a valid California-issued Class A Commercial Driver License with tank vehicle endorsement.

Education and Experience: 
 Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying.

Road Equipment Operator I: Two years of experience in road maintenance and construction work.  Satisfactory completion of the Department-sponsored training program in the operation of rollers, loaders, bulldozers, etc. or one year of experience in the operation of rollers, loaders, bulldozers, etc.

Knowledge of:  

• Provisions of the California Vehicle Code applying to the operation of vehicles.
• Safety practices in the operation of heavy construction equipment.
• Road maintenance and construction operations, materials and procedures.
• Operation of and preventive maintenance for trucks and road maintenance equipment.

Skill/Ability to: 

• Operate a wide variety of complex road construction and maintenance equipment and light and medium duty trucks including graders, bulldozers, loaders, backhoes, excavators, rollers and mowers.
• Make minor adjustments and emergency repairs to equipment.
• Perform road maintenance duties which require strength, agility and endurance.
• Instruct and train personnel in road maintenance tasks.
• Work courteously and effectively with the public and with co-workers.
• Follow oral and/or written instructions.
• Climb, bend, stand and walk for extended periods of time.
• Lift and carry equipment (50 lbs. min.) and supplies (50 lbs. min.) used in construction and maintenance work.
• Meet U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) drug and alcohol testing requirements and standards for holder of a commercial driver’s license.

Anyone may apply.  Current County of San Mateo and County of San Mateo Superior Court of California employees with at least six months (1040 hours) of continuous service in a classified regular, probationary, or extra-help/limited term position prior to the final filing date will receive five points added to their final passing score on this examination.

The examination process will consist of an application screening (weight: Pass/Fail) based on the candidates' application and responses to the supplemental questions. Candidates who pass the application screening will be invited to a Performance Exam (weight: 100%). Depending on the number of applicants, an application appraisal of education and experience may be used in place of other examinations or further evaluation of work experience may be conducted to group applicants by level of qualification All applicants who meet the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed advancement through any subsequent phase of the examination. All examinations will be given in San Mateo County, California and applicants must participate at their own expense. 

In addition, a copy of the Class A Commercial driver license must be attached to the application.

The Town of Ross is seeking a full-time Public Works Director/Town Engineer. One Traffic Engineer position will manage, coordinate, and oversee the City’s Traffic Calming Program. Key responsibilities include working with residents on traffic calming requests, collecting and analyzing traffic data, conducting public outreach, developing and implementing traffic calming measures to address community concerns, conducting after studies, and preparing recommendations for City Council consideration. This position will also manage the traffic issue request queue for all types of requests, working with the rest of the division on evaluations, resolutions, and responses to the requests.  This position may also perform other duties as assigned.

A second Traffic Engineer position will help manage, coordinate and oversee large transportation infrastructure projects from planning through construction. This position will support our Transportation Special Projects team, working closely with a Principal Transportation Engineer and a Senior Traffic Engineer primarily on the delivery of large-scale transportation infrastructure projects for the City. Responsibilities include advancing projects through various stages of development and implementation, representing the City in coordination with stakeholders and partner agencies, applying for and managing grant funding related to the projects, overseeing consultant teams, reviewing technical plans, specifications and reports, conducting public outreach; providing traffic related technical support to other Public Works divisions, and performing other duties as assigned.

The Department?

The Public Works Department is comprised of Regulatory Compliance, Engineering, Field Maintenance, Facilities/Fleet, Wastewater Treatment, and Asset Management Divisions. Each division is led by one of two Deputy Directors, who report to the Director of Public Works. The department is responsible for the City’s major capital projects and infrastructure including streets, streetlights, traffic signals, publicly owned facilities, sewer and storm conveyance systems, wastewater treatment plant (WWTP), pump stations, a major lagoon, dams, and levees; as well as solid waste and environmental programs. The Position

One (1) vacancy will focus on general capital improvement projects (streets, storm, bridges, etc.), one (1) vacancy will focus on construction and maintenance of facilities at the wastewater treatment plant, and one (1) vacancy will focus on private development reviews.

The Senior Engineers in the Capital Improvement Program (CIP) and Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) sections supervise and participate in the conduct of complicated engineering planning, design, and investigation activities. The Senior Engineer in the Development Services (DS) section will lead staff, consultants, and applicants through the private development permitting processes.

Some duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Supervise and participate in the development of designs, plans, specifications, and estimates for the construction of public works projects.
• Coordinate with contractors, construction managers, construction inspectors, and the design engineers to resolve issues during construction.
• Coordinate with the staff at the WWTP especially the Plant Manager, Operations Superintendent, and Maintenance Superintendent to make sure the WWTP operations and maintenance needs are incorporated into the projects as well as the impacts to ongoing operations during construction are considered and addressed.
• Inspect project sites to assist in solution of difficult problems; interpret specifications and City policy and make change orders.
• Review plans for construction prepared by private engineers.
• Check computations and specified materials for accuracy and compliance with regulations.
• Upgrade City standard plans and specifications; review subdivision and parcel maps.
• Serve as staff to a variety of City commissions, boards, and committees on public works engineering matters.
• Prepare periodic project status reports.
• Prepare various applications for state and federal grants.
• Review and make recommendations on technical reports and studies.
• Assist in the preparation of the capital improvement plan and budget.
• Participate in the selection and supervision of private professional engineers for the development of plans, specifications, studies, and reports.
• Coordinate engineering-related activities with other City departments, divisions, and sections and with outside agencies.
• Confer with staff regarding project priorities and programs.
• Assist in preparing and administering the operating budget.
• Supervise, train, and evaluate professional and technical subordinates.

The Senior Engineer receives general direction from the Engineering Manager or higher-level personnel and exercises direct and indirect supervision over professional and technical engineering personnel.

Under the supervision and general direction of the District Engineer, this student engineering position  performs a variety of basic technical civil engineering duties such as mapping, data entry, review of residential and commercial developments, and supporting capital projects. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
The Engineering Intern is a part-time hourly/non-exempt position that performs varied tasks and assists the Engineering Team with applied research, inspections, and administrative support functions as part of the learning experience in conjunction with educational coursework leading to an advanced degree in Engineering.

Special Requirements:
Essential duties require the following physical abilities and work environment:

• Ability to work in a standard office environment and drive to different sites as needed. Ability to work in environments with some exposure to noise, the outdoors, and mechanical hazards.

Event Services Representatives assist in monitoring and providing customer/client support for special events. Event Services Representatives maybe required to provide technical assistance and set up of equipment on day of event, assist in resolving customer issues and complaints, and respond to emergency situations during events. The on-site Event Services Representative coordinates with event staff such as ushers, ticket takers, security, crowd control, outside contractors, and performs facility safety checks which may include enforcing Safety and Fire Marshall Regulations.  

Due to the nature of the job responsibilities, Event Services Representatives must be able to:  

• Work extended/irregular hours including nights, weekends, and holidays, as needed. 

• Stand and/or walk for extended periods of time. 

• Lift and carry items weighing between 25 and 50 pounds on an as needed basis. 

• Comprehend verbal and written instructions. 

• Prepare event reports.

                            MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Education/Training: 

• Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade supplemented by specialized training in accounting, customer service, or a related field.

Experience: 

• Two years of increasingly responsible customer service and clerical accounting experience.

• Familiar with cash handling practices
• Knowledge and skills necessary to operate a cash register
• Clerical accounting experience in the areas of billing, collections, payment processing, and financial recordkeeping
• Strong organizational, time management, and communication skills (written and verbal)
• Excellent attention to detail
• Ability to work alone as well as in a team setting
• Self-starter
• Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced office environment
