SENIOR HAZARDOUS MATERIALS INSPECTOR

Position Duties

The San José Fire Department is seeking candidates for one (1) Senior Hazardous Materials Inspector position within the Bureau of Fire Prevention. This is the supervisory level in a three-tier inspection series of the Fire Department's Hazardous Materials Program. Incumbents participate in and oversee the work of Hazardous Materials Inspectors involved in enforcing city ordinances and codes governing the Hazardous Materials Program. Individuals in this position receive administrative guidance from the Division Manager and perform challenging and complex plan reviews, inspections, and investigations.  They are responsible for recommending changes based on new processes and procedures. This role differs from the next lower class of Hazardous Materials Inspector II, where incumbents carry out inspection work under the supervision of the Senior Hazardous Materials Inspector.

Duties for this position include, but are not limited to:

• Assist in developing the Hazardous Materials Inspection program, goals, and budget.
• Assigns, supervises and coordinates the work of Hazardous Materials Inspectors.
• Provides technical guidance and training to Hazardous Materials Inspectors.
• Establishes procedures for reviewing and approving Hazardous Materials Management Plans for occupancies requiring Short- or Long-Form Management Plans.
• Assists in performing complex hazardous materials system plan reviews and inspections in support of the Hazardous Materials Unit to meet plan check quality and timeline target expectations.
• Prepares required reports associated with reviewing progress, accomplishments of performance metrics, investigations, compliance orders, and other reports as required.
• Attends seminars, workshops, and other types of training to maintain current knowledge of information related to hazardous materials.
• Appears in court to provide testimony, as required.
• Liaison with other internal Development Services partners, outside regulatory agencies, and cities that have adopted the model ordinance.

Salary range for this classification is $138,902.40-$169,325.52 paid annually.

This range includes an approximate five percent (5%) ongoing non-pensionable pay. Actual salary shall be determined by the final candidates’ qualifications and experience.

Position Duties

The San José Fire Department (SJFD) is seeking to fill multiple Senior Public Safety Dispatcher positions in the Communications Division.  

Senior Public Safety Dispatchers (Senior PSDs) are responsible for supervising a team of Public Safety Radio Dispatchers (PSRDs) assigned to a shift in the Communications Center.  PSRD is the journey-level class for public safety dispatching within the City of San José wherein incumbents are required to handle the full range of telephone answering and dispatch functions.

Responsibilities of the Senior PSD include, but are not limited to the following:

• Supervising PSRDs, including approving time-off and other scheduling requests in accordance with the established guidelines.
• Assigning PSRDs to work the various dispatch positions within the Communications Center. 
• Conducting training sessions and drills to maintain the efficiency and coordination of their assigned team. 
• Evaluating the performance of team members and giving frequent feedback to subordinates.
• Preparing written training evaluations and performance appraisals.
• Investigating and responding to resident, department, and allied agency concerns or complaints.
• Coordinating with Chief Officers in the field regarding matters affecting department operations.
• Performing additional support tasks when assigned to an administrative role in the Operations Unit, Training Unit, Quality Improvement Unit, or Systems Support Unit. 
• Performing all duties of the PSRD classification.

Salary range(s) for this classification is/are:

• $115,356.80 - $140,358.40 (pensionable) 
• $125,450.52 - $152,639.76 (including non-pensionable and certification pay)

• Upon successful completion of the Public Safety Officer in Training requirements, incumbents promote to Public Safety Officer I ($136,764 - $158,321).
• Upon successful completion of all phases of training, members of the Public Safety Officer I classification promote to Public Safety Officer II ($144,724 - $180,310).
• This position has an excellent benefit package, including 2.7% at 57 retirement plan.

Under immediate supervision of a Public Safety Lieutenant or Captain, either currently attends the California POST Basic Academy and is learning to perform a wide range of public safety work involving the protection of life and property including law enforcement, crime prevention, fire suppression, rescue, and basic life support activities; or has graduated from the California POST Basic Academy within the last 12 months; and performs related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS 

The position of Public Safety Officer Academy Attendee/Graduate is the training level classification for general police and fire work for those incumbents not affiliated with an agency and currently enrolled in a police academy. Incumbents are not sworn personnel and are generally in this classification until successful completion of the police academy. Assignment to this classification is temporary. If incumbents do not successfully complete a police academy, they will be terminated.  Incumbents hired after the graduation from the California POST Basic Academy are not sworn personnel and are generally in this classification until they are promoted to Public Safety Officer I.

Public Safety Officer Academy Attendee/Graduate is distinguished from the higher-level Public Safety Officer I in that the latter is a sworn position where incumbents continue training for both police and fire duties. Incumbents must successfully complete the police academy prior to being promoted to the classification of Public Safety Officer I.

The City of Sunnyvale invites applications for the Public Safety Officer - In Training. The position of Public Safety Officer-In Training is a non-sworn, training classification while incumbents are attending the police and fire academies. Upon successful completion of the police academy, incumbents will be promoted to the sworn, training position of Public Safety Officer I. Upon successful completion of all required training, incumbents will be promoted to the sworn position of Public Safety Officer II.
