Facilities Maintenance & Operations

FM&O, short for Facilities Maintenance & Operations, ensures County facilities are safe, comfortable, and clean. From historic landmarks to modern offices, we keep things running smoothly.

The FM&O Stationary Engineers perform maintenance and repairs to the various plumbing, mechanical, and lighting systems throughout County facilities. These include boilers, chillers, pumps, motors, lamps, ballasts, drivers, toilets, sinks, and faucets as well as utilizing the lighting and building control systems to schedule and adjust run times of the various pieces of equipment. There are multiple Stationary Engineer I/II vacancies in FM&O.

Position Overview

Under the direction of a Supervising Stationary Engineer, Stationary Engineers are responsible for a wide variety of repair and maintenance work in the areas of HVAC, electrical, plumbing, refrigeration, emergency power systems, water treatment systems, boiler equipment, and piping repair, building automation systems, and miscellaneous equipment repair. Stationary Engineer II is a journey-level classification, and incumbents are expected to have proficiency, perform independently, and solve complex problems in all of the areas listed above.

Various Opportunities

There are multiple vacancies to be filled throughout the Department. Work locations will include Redwood City Government Center, San Mateo Medical Center, Youth Services Center, and Maple Street Correctional Facility.

Important Info

Candidates hired as Stationary Engineers must be willing to work evenings, weekends, and alternate shifts. They must also successfully obtain and maintain a Sheriff's Office security clearance as a condition of employment.

The ideal candidates for these positions will have:

• At least three years of journey-level experience as a Stationary Engineer.
• A minimum of three years of journey-level experience in mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems.
• Extensive knowledge and experience working with boiler and HVAC systems.
• Proficiency in a wide variety of installations and repairs on plumbing, gas system piping, chiller/boiler piping, and wastewater systems, including the ability to operate a large sewer snake.
• Certification as a Backflow Prevention Tester.
• Experience in energy management and computer-controlled systems.
• The ability to troubleshoot, repair, and maintain a variety of equipment, including air conditioning, electric motors, heating units, heat pumps, light commercial furnaces, burners, fresh air and exhaust fans, economizers, and humidifiers.
• Experience with Fire Alarm testing, troubleshooting, and NFPA codes.
• Experience in a hospital or healthcare setting.

THE ROLE AND PROJECTS:
Reporting to the Economic Development Program Manager, the Intern will be engaged in project-based work to advance key economic development strategic initiatives.  Examples of the work include, but are not limited to the following:

• Implement tasks outlined in the San Rafael Economic Development Strategic Plan.
• Develop a business support communications plan in collaboration with business support partners.
• Support Division Manager to activate outreach to businesses.
• Learn and assist with contract management.

HOURS, COMPENSATION & BENEFITS:
This position will work approximately 12-20 hours per week.  The candidate will have hands-on learning and work experience at San Rafael City Hall and outreach in the community.

This is a temporary position and hours worked may not exceed 1,000 hours in a fiscal year (July 1 thru June 30).

In accordance with the salary resolution, this position receives no benefits with the exception of Paid Sick Leave and a retirement plan.  

• Temporary employees are entitled to receive sick leave in accordance with California's Paid Sick Leave Law (AB 1522).

Compensation
Interns will be paid for their services between $25 to $30 based on skills and background.  Flexible weekly hours will range from part time to full time hours, depending upon assignment.

Restrictions
Internships are limited to no more than 960 hours in a fiscal year and are non-benefitted positions.

The Human Services Department (HSD) delivers and supports services by forging long-term community partnerships; engaging with and building the capacity of the community to do its own problem- solving; and leveraging financial and volunteer resources. 

The Aging and Family Services Division (AFS) of HSD specifically supports older residents and their caregivers to live active, healthy lives in the Tri-City community. With input from local, older adults (age 55 years+) as our guide, the AFS team provides a continuum of supportive services, from health promotion activities to home-based end of life care. AFS has a Senior InfoLine that is answered in 4 languages (Farsi, English, Spanish and Chinese) that is often an entry point.

DefinitionUnder administrative direction from the Human Services Director, plans, organizes and directs a Division of the Human Services Department which provides specialized family services; and serves as a member of the department's management team.

Class Characteristics
This professional management classification in the Human Services Department may be assigned as Youth and Family Services Administrator, Aging and Family Services Administrator or Family Resource Center Administrator. Incumbent follows general guidelines or professional and administrative standards in accomplishing assignments; it is characterized by the responsibility to develop and implement mental and physical health and other social services that support self-sufficiency, strengthen families, help children achieve their optimal development, and help older adults remain independent and engaged in the community for as long as possible. Supervision for the Family Resource Center Administrator is jointly provided by the Human Services Director and leadership team of the Family Resource Center. Review of work is occasional or on a problem basis with incumbents presenting alternative courses for policy decisions. Routine and unusual problems are handled within the context of general plans, broad policies, budgetary limitations and professional standards. Successful performance is measured by total results. This classification is distinguished from Human Services Director by the latter's responsibility to plan, organize and direct the work of the Human Services Department, and from Clinical Supervisor by the latter's responsibility to supervise counseling or social work staff, to monitor the implementation of professional standards, and to provide training and direction to professional staff and interns. The Department of Transportation (DOT) is seeking to fill 16 full-time Maintenance Assistant positions.

The Maintenance Assistant total salary range is $24.74 to $31.56 hourly or $51,459.20 to $65,644.80 annually . The actual salary shall be determined by the final candidates' qualifications and experience.

The Infrastructure Maintenance Division of DOT is looking to fill 16 full-time vacant positions. These positions perform work in the maintenance and repair of concrete, pavement, sewers, landscaping, traffic signs, and traffic markings. Duties include digging holes, trenches, and ditches. They also operate a wide range of hand, mechanical, and power tools, as well as a variety of light and heavy vehicles, trucks, and equipment relevant to work performed, ensuring compliance with safe working practices. Maintenance crews provide services seven days a week. Individuals in this classification may be required to work alternate work shifts, including grave and swing, weekends, holidays, overtime, and on-call.
