The normal work schedule will include evenings and weekends. Candidates hired will work one of two schedules: Seasonal employees are limited to a maximum of 1,000 hours over a 5 month seasonal period. 1,000 Hour employees are limited to 25 hours per week for a maximum of 1,000 hours per fiscal year. While the current vacancy is for a 1,000 hour position, this recruitment may be used to fill 1,500 hour positions in the future.

DEFINITION

To perform a variety of duties related to maintaining the City’s natural resources, facilities, and property.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES - Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Operate golf cart type vehicle, mower or other machinery; operate small power tools and equipment.

When assigned to Park Maintenance:

• Prepare and condition City operated sports fields.
• Maintain, mow, and clean parks and playground facilities, restrooms and surrounding areas.
• Monitor/Check swimming pool pumps, filters and related equipment; monitor and apply chemicals; refer to appropriate staff for further attention.
• Repair and maintain park and landscape irrigation systems.
• Maintain municipal swimming pool pumps, filters, and related equipment; monitor and apply chemicals; refer to appropriate staff for further attention.

When assigned to Open Space Maintenance:

• Assist in vegetation management; assist in tree care, creek, preserve and natural resource maintenance.
• Maintain bike trails, power tools, and irrigation systems.
• Perform general labor duties.
• Operate tree care equipment such as chippers, stump grinders, power tools and other related equipment.
• Perform data collection/GPS in preserves and open space areas, creeks, and the urban forest.
• Perform pesticide application.

When assigned to Facilities:

• Set up and breakdown meeting rooms according to supplied floor plans
• Make minor repairs to site furniture and equipment
• Perform custodial duties within and surrounding facilities
• Assist facility renters with a variety of customer service needs.
• Perform semi-skilled and skilled facility maintenance, janitorial and repairs.
• Assist facility renters with a variety of customer service needs.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:

• Basic methods, tools, and equipment used in natural resource and grounds maintenance and facility maintenance.
• Principles and practices of safety management.
• Practices and methods of public relations and customer service; techniques and principles of effective interpersonal communication.
• Basic understanding and principles of agronomy, natural resource management, forestry, horticulture, and biology.
• Basic principle of facility maintenance and management
• Basic principles and practices of record keeping.
• Principles and techniques of first aid and artificial respiration.
• Safe driving practices.

Ability to:

• On a continuous basis, walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel, twist, and reach while operating equipment and perform maintenance and/or construction activities; perform heavy manual labor; operate a variety of hand and power tools used in maintenance activities; know and understand maintenance operations, janitorial and/or construction projects, observe safety rules.

Experience and Training

Experience:

Two years of increasingly responsible experience performing maintenance work similar to that of a Parks and Facilities Maintenance Worker I with the City of Roseville.

Training:

Equivalent to completion of the twelfth (12th) grade, GED, or higher level degree; additional course work and training in maintenance, agronomy, horticulture, forestry, natural resource management, electric, plumbing, carpentry, janitorial or related field is highly desirable.

License or Certificate

• Possession of a valid California driver’s license by date of appointment. 
• Possession of CPR and First Aid certificates within six (6) months of hire.

Necessary Special Requirement:

• Must be 18 years of age or older.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This is the journey level class in the Tree Trimmer series and is distinguished from the I level by the ability to perform the full range of duties assigned with only occasional instruction or assistance as unusual or unique situations arise. Positions in this class are flexibly staffed and are normally filled by advancement from the I level.

This class is distinguished from the Senior Tree Trimmer in that the latter performs advanced journey level work and provides technical and functional supervision to assigned staff.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Receives immediate supervision from an assigned supervisor; receives technical and functional supervision from the Senior Tree Trimmer or Arborist Technician.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES - Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Using aerial lift and through skilled climbing, trim and structurally prune trees to provide clearance of streets, sidewalks, signs and lights as well as to ensure the continued health of the trees.
• Perform tree trimming using chainsaws, hand/pole saws and loppers; remove trees, stumps, hangers, branches and related debris; perform stump grinding and plant healthcare duties.
• Plant, spray, stake and maintain trees on City owned property and in the public right-of–way.
• Operate tree trimming and maintenance equipment such as boom trucks, chippers, stump grinders, and power tools, such as chain saws and hydraulic loppers.
• Clean, sharpen, maintain tools, ropes, and other tree maintenance equipment.
• Collect debris from tree trimming and removal operations into piles, using shovels, rakes, or other tools.
• Load debris onto trucks or into chipper and haul it away for disposal.
• Inspect trees for public safety and wildlife; respond to requests and inquiries from the general public.
• Identify equipment needs for each assigned project.
• Utilize proper safety precautions related to work performed.
• Work multiple shifts during emergencies, seasonally caused circumstances, or special projects in varying climate and temperature conditions.
• Perform general natural resource maintenance work when not assigned to tree trimming duties.
• Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other City employees and the public using principles of good customer service.
• Operate tree trimming and maintenance equipment such as boom trucks, chippers, stump grinder, dump trucks, and power tools, such as chain saws and hydraulic loppers.
• Perform related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:

• Safety rules and work practices used in operating and maintaining tree maintenance equipment.
• Uses and purposes of tools and equipment related to tree trimming and maintenance.
• Basic methods, tools, materials, and equipment used in trees maintenance.
• Basic principles and practices of record keeping.
• Safety rules and work practices used in operating and maintain tree maintenance equipment and trucks.
• Methods and techniques used in tree trimming and maintenance.
• ANSI standards and ISA best management practices for tree planting, plant healthcare and pruning.

Ability to:

• Perform skilled tree trimming and maintenance work; climb trees at heights necessary to perform trimming activities.
• On a continuous basis, know and understand tree trimming and removal operations; observe safety rules.
• Intermittently, sit at a desk while studying or preparing reports; twist to reach equipment or materials; stand, walk, balance, stoop, kneel, climb, crawl, and bend while performing tree trimming and removal duties; perform simple grasping and fine manipulation; and lift or carry weight of 50 pounds or less.
• Use and operate vehicular and stationary mechanical equipment, hand power tools, mechanical equipment, and equipment required for the work in a safe and efficient manner.
• Prepare and maintain simple records of activities.
• Perform heavy physical labor.
• Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

• Independently perform work in tree maintenance and pruning or removing large trees using aerial lift and skilled climbing.

• One year of increasingly responsible experience performing tree trimming and maintenance duties, including demonstrated ability to climb trees.

Training:

• Perform tree trimming using chainsaws, hand/pole saws and loppers; remove trees, stumps, hangers, branches and related debris; perform stump grinding and plant healthcare duties.
• Plant, spray, stake and maintain trees on City owned property and in the public right-of–way.
• Operate tree trimming and maintenance equipment such as boom trucks, chippers, stump grinders, and power tools, such as chain saws and hydraulic loppers.
• Clean, sharpen, maintain tools, ropes, and other tree maintenance equipment.
• Collect debris from tree trimming and removal operations into piles, using shovels, rakes, or other tools.
• Load debris onto trucks or into chipper and haul it away for disposal.

Work Environment:  This position is part of the Land and Facilities Services Department at the Midpen offices in Los Altos, California and will work primarily in an office environment, but may occasionally work in field environments. When conducting field assignments, work may include traversing rough, difficult terrain in inclement or hot weather with exposure to poison oak.  Duties will include building and facility work that will require climbing ladders and entering confined spaces.  Ideal candidates will be comfortable working in these types of conditions, as well as in an office environment. This is an on call, temporary, non-benefited position in our Urban Search and Rescue Warehouse in East Palo Alto working between 10-30 hours a week.  This is an entry-level position.  The incumbent will report to the Division Chief and work closely with the Logistics Specialist.  This position will provide extra help around the warehouse including:

The City of Lincoln is hiring for the position of Maintenance Worker II within the Parks and Facilities Division of the Public Works Department.  The Department is looking for an individual with at least three years of responsible experience performing municipal parks maintenance.  Course work and training in maintenance, agronomy, horticulture, forestry, natural resource management, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, janitorial or related field is highly desirable.  A successful candidate will have the ability to obtain a Class B Driver’s License within one year of employment.

The Department is seeking a candidate who understands the principles, methods, and techniques of park operations and maintenance; has knowledge and experience using the materials, tools and equipment needed in the construction, maintenance and repair of park facilities; understands safety principles and practices; and understands methods of planning and scheduling time, labor and materials along with use and care of park equipment, irrigation systems and landscaped areas. Under general supervision, this position performs the full array of duties assigned to classes in the Maintenance Worker series including maintenance, construction and equipment operation work in one or more Public Works divisions; occasionally assists in the training of lower level Maintenance Workers; and performs other related duties as required.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

The Maintenance Worker II is the journey level class responsible for a wide variety of maintenance and construction tasks. The Maintenance Worker II receives general supervision from a Public Works Supervisor. May exercise technical and functional supervision over assigned staff.

PHYSICAL, MENTAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL WORKING CONDITIONS

Position requires sitting, standing, walking on level and slippery surfaces, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, grasping and making repetitive hand movement in the performance of daily duties. The position also requires both near and far vision when inspecting work and operating assigned equipment. The need to lift, carry and push tools, equipment and supplies weighing 25 pounds or more is also required. Additionally, the incumbent in this outdoor position works in all weather conditions including wet, hot and cold. The incumbent may use cleaning and lubricating chemicals, pesticides or herbicides which may expose the employee to fumes, dust and air contaminants.
