Incumbents will work a flexible schedule, with increased scheduling during peak workload periods, but less than 1,000 hours during the assignment through the fiscal year starting July 1st and ending June 30th.

JOB SUMMARY

Under general supervision this position teaches swimming lessons and/or specialized aquatic classes to the public. This position also monitors the use of the swimming pool and enforces safety rules. The Swim Instructor is a part-time hourly position. This class receives assignments from and reports to the Supervisory Team. Must be available to work evenings, weekends and holidays. 

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES

• Conducts swim instruction classes.
• Administers first aid.
• Enforces pool regulations and policies.
• Assists in the maintenance of operational equipment.
• Maintains the pool area, deck and locker room for cleanliness and safety.
• Performs rescues.
• Evaluates student performance.
• Provides customer service as needed.
• Other duties as assigned.
• Must be available to work evenings, weekends and holidays.

SALARY

$16.00 - $20.00 per hour

This is a part-time, at-will, non-benefited position. Hours are limited to less than 1,000 hours per year.

BASIC EXAMPLE OF DUTIES

Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

• Performs a variety of unskilled/semi-skilled maintenance or custodial duties involving manual labor of facilities, parks, storm drains, streets, etc.
• Load and unload supplies and materials.
• Assist in performing basic carpentry, painting, plumbing, and pipe-fitting work.
• Perform related duties as assigned.

DEFINITION: Under general supervision, performs lifeguard duties, enforces all rules and regulations pertaining to the safety and well-being of visitors and patrons. Perform related work as required, may include light cleaning and janitorial.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

• Active scanning and patron surveillance, practice preventive Lifeguarding.
• Enforce all rules and regulations.
• Recognize and respond professionally to emergencies, provide care as indicated under the scope of training, including activating EAP. 
• Assume assigned duties connected with care and maintenance of the facility.
• Maintain certain pool records and reports as required.
• Provide basic maintenance, equipment care and chemical pool testing.
• Deal tactfully and courteously with the public.
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other city employees, other agencies, and the general public.
• Actively attend and participate in required staff training and in-service drills.
• Ability to communicate clearly both orally and in writing.
• The ability to speak English clearly and understandably.
• Perform related duties as required.

TRAINING & EXPERIENCE: Must possess current Lifeguard Certification, which includes CPR for the Professional Rescuer and Lifeguard First Aid.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to lift 50 lbs. and react quickly to emergencies.

PRE-EMPLOYMENT CONDITIONS: Candidates receiving a conditional job offer must pass a pre-placement fingerprint review. Candidates must be comfortable calling 911 in an emergency and providing care according to the level of training.

• Use evaluative tools with consistency and fairness when evaluating lifeguard and swim instructor staff.
• Assist the Aquatics Coordinator and Supervisor as required.
• Manage and Assist with coordination of Swim Lesson program.
• Organize and direct staff trainings, certification courses, lifeguard audits and Aquatics Academy with guidance from supervisors.
• Keep in close contact with the Aquatics Coordinator via written and verbal communication.

The City of Patterson’s Public Works Department is seeking to fill (1) one part-time Maintenance Worker positions and to establish an Eligibility List.
