The City of American Canyon is seeking individuals who will serve as Lifeguards or Lifeguard/WSI.  Lifeguard/Lifeguard/WSI observe the activity of swimmers in and around the American Canyon Aquatics Pool and provide lifesaving services as needed. Lifeguards also assist and teach with swim lessons and other pool-related activities.  The position may be scheduled during hours that may include early mornings, nights, weekends and holidays and are considered temporary/part-time and are limited to no more than 1,000 hours per fiscal year.

The City of Brisbane is currently recruiting certified Lifeguards for our beautiful year-round outdoor aquatic facility.  Lifeguards patrol and watch the activities in and around the community swimming pool, enforce regulations to prevent accidents, and rescue swimmers in distress.  A full job description is available at www.calopps.org.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:  Graduation from high school or GED equivalent is desirable.  This provision may be waived for applicants 15 to 18 years of age with ability to obtain a valid work permit.

Experience:  Previous experience as a lifeguard and WSI certification is desirable.

Special Requirements:  Current Lifeguarding, Standard First Aid, and CPR for the Professional Rescuer certificates are required.  Applicants appointed to this position must be able to obtain Oxygen Administration certification within a year of employment.

SALARY AND HOURS:

$14.00 – $14.70 – $15.43 – $16.21 - $17.00 per hour.  Part-time position, paid sick leave benefit available. Initial appointments are generally made at the first step of this five-step scale.  Hours will range from 15-25 hours per week.  Candidates that make the eligibility list may be selected for shifts as needed throughout the year. Must be able to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays throughout the entire year.

ABOUT THE POSITION

A City of San Ramon Lifeguard provides safety, supervision, and instruction for the patrons at the San Ramon Olympic Pool & Aquatic Park and Dougherty Valley Aquatic Center.  These advanced lifeguarding positions provide leadership and program responsibility to the San Ramon Olympic Pool & Aquatic Park and Dougherty Valley Aquatic Center in all operations at the facility including swim lessons, recreational swim, water safety classes, aquatics summer camps, and staff development. 

TYPICAL JOB DUTIES

All lifeguards supervise and ensure patron safety at all times, including clearly and professionally conveying rules to patrons and enforcing facility regulations; Perform rescues involving the exertion of up to 100 pounds of force to move objects and retrieval of heavy items from 14’ of depth;  Sit and/or stand for long periods of time; Administer first aid and provide emergency care as required; Work outdoors in varying weather conditions and with exposure to pool chemicals; Maintain a safe aquatic environment; Greet the public and respond to questions and inquiries; Assist the Swim Lesson program;  Assist with cleaning and routine maintenance of the aquatic park, including locker rooms, guard office, and pool surfaces; Maintain a professional appearance and demeanor by wearing appropriate uniform or attire for the position and exhibiting respect and enthusiasm; Display the ability to swim and tread water; Keep records and reports; Facilitate program activities according to a prepared curriculum; and provide feedback regarding the City's aquatic program and activity schedules to the participants or supervisors.

Senior Lifeguard  (salary range:  $13.32 - $15.99 per hour)

All duties and responsibilities of a Lifeguard IV, plus:

• Conduct proper opening and closing procedures of the aquatic facilities;
• Assist in staff trainings and meetings;
• Analyze program needs and recommend new and innovative program ideas;
• Set up proper furniture arrangements, equipment, and facility maintenance;
• Work as a Lead with Lifeguards and Swim Instructors and offering assistance in maintaining the proper execution of all aspects of facility rentals and programs;
• Ensure all policies of the City of San Ramon are followed during all programs, special events and facility use;
• Provide excellent customer service and problem solving;
• Perform functions of registration software applications;
• Prepare daily deposits and reconcile daily reports; ensure all revenues received at assigned sites are properly entered and accounted for;
• Lead staff during facility rentals and Lap Swim;
• Assist the Pool Manager with Recreation Swim, and the Junior Lifeguard and Star Guard camps.

Assistant Pool Manager (salary range:  $15.29 - $18.34 per hour)

All duties and responsibilities of a Senior Lifeguard, plus:

• Operate City of San Ramon vehicles
• Plan and organize program elements
• Maintaining supply inventory
• Acting as the direct contact for program participants to explain policies, procedures, and problem solve
• Assist the Pool Manager with the Swim Lesson program during summer programming
• Act as the lead staff for the Swim Lesson program 

Pool Manager   (salary range:  $16.95 - $20.34 per hour)

All duties and responsibilities of an Assistant Pool Manager, plus:

• Schedule staff for facility rentals and City of San Ramon programming
• Create, modify, and implement age-appropriate program curriculums
• Create and distribute marketing materials
• Assist in the implementation and scheduling of staff, programs, and services
• Administer the following programs: Swim Lessons, Junior Lifeguard Camp, Star Guard Aquatic camp, and Recreation Swim

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

• Appropriate clearance from Livescan fingerprinting and a negative TB certificate dated within the past two years
• Current American Red Cross certifications or the equivalent Lifeguard Training and First Aid, CPR/AED for Lifeguards
   

Senior Lifeguard

• Must be at least 17 years old by July 21, 2018
• At least two or more years of experience or equivalent working in aquatics
• Possession of at least one instructor level certification in Lifeguarding, Water Safety, or other related areas
• Previous experience as a Lifeguard/Swim Instructor is preferred

Assistant Pool Manager

• Must be at least 18 years old by July 21, 2018
• Possession of a valid California Class C Driver's License and a satisfactory driving record
• At least three or more years of experience working in aquatics with demonstrated leadership work experience
• Possession of Water Safety Instructor certification or its equivalent

Pool Manager

• Must be at least 18 years old by July 21, 2018
• Possession of a valid California Class C Driver's License and a satisfactory driving record

TYPICAL JOB DUTIES

All Lifeguards are responsible for maintaining safe, clean and well maintained aquatic facility as well as interact professionally and communicate effectively with swimmers and the general public.  Lifeguard are also responsible for maintaining physical fitness in order to tread water, perform rescues, retrieval of heavy items from 14" of water, sit and stand for long periods and work in varying weather conditions with exposure to pool chemicals.  In addition, Lifeguards are responsible for administering first aid providing emergency care, writing reports, assisting senior staff and supervisors as well as facilitating program activities. Lifeguards must maintain a professional appearance and demeanor by exhibiting respect and enthusiasm.

Lifeguard lll (salary range: $12.50 - $15.00 per hour)

All duties and responsibilities of a Lifeguard ll as described above , plus

• Teach swim lessons
• Assess and test Swim Lesson participants
• Assist the Lead Pool Manager with the Junior Lifeguard and Star Guard Aquatic camps
• Lifeguard the waterslide and dispatch participants using the waterslide
• Act as a Lead Lifeguard during Recreation Swim

Lifeguard lV (salary range: $13.00 - $15.60 per hour)

• Conduct daily shift trainings
• Act as a Team Leader during all staff trainings
