Maintenance Worker I

The Maintenance Worker I – Parks, Trees & Bocce is the entry level class in the Public Works Maintenance series that allows the incumbent to develop journey level knowledge and abilities. Initially, under immediate supervision, incumbents perform the more routine and less complex assignments within an established procedural framework where there are minimal consequences of error, including a wide variety of maintenance and construction tasks. This classification is alternatively staffed with Maintenance Worker II and incumbents may advance to the higher level after gaining experience and demonstrating a level of proficiency that meets the qualifications of the higher level class.

Maintenance Worker II

The Maintenance Worker II – Parks, Trees & Bocce is the journey level class in the Public Works Maintenance series in which incumbents are expected to independently perform the full scope of assigned duties. Incumbents perform a full range of maintenance and construction tasks. Incumbents may advance to the higher level after gaining experience and demonstrating a level of proficiency that meets the qualifications of the higher level class. This classification is distinguished from the next higher classification of Lead Maintenance Worker, which is responsible for performing the more complex maintenance assignments and has lead responsibility duties.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED/EXERCISED:

Maintenance Worker I – Parks, Trees & Bocce

Receives immediate supervision from a Public Works Superintendent. Incumbents may receive lead direction from a Maintenance Worker II or a Lead Maintenance Worker. Incumbents in this class do not routinely exercise supervision.

Maintenance Worker II – Parks, Trees, & Bocce

Receives general supervision from a Public Works Superintendent. Incumbents may receive lead direction from a Lead Maintenance Worker. May exercise functional or technical supervision over lower level workers.

Essential Functions:  

Parks, Trees & Bocce: Performs bocce maintenance including court grooming, repairs to courts such as curbs, backstops, and fenced end caps, and repairs to non-court amenities such as picnic tables, bocce shed, and bulletin boards; performs a variety of groundskeeping duties in and around bocce courts. Performs a variety of maintenance, repair, construction and installation work related to parks and tree maintenance. Performs park maintenance including  mowing, edging, and weeding landscaped areas; plants trees, flowers, and shrubs; assists in the installation of new park areas; repairs tiles and removes graffiti at parks; maintains and upgrades all City parks, pathways, and landscape areas; repairs and installs landscape irrigation systems; assists in the application of herbicides and pesticides; inspects park play equipment for conditions needing repair and maintenance. Performs tree maintenance including maintaining City trees for public safety by performing tree pruning; cuts and trims tree branches and limbs which create hazardous conditions; removes rubbish, dead limbs, and hanging limbs from trees. Conducts traffic control during maintenance and construction projects; sets up traffic control signs and direct and control traffic around work sites; communicates with the public during flagging duties. Operates trucks and other maintenance and construction equipment; maintains, repairs, and cleans assigned vehicles and equipment; inspects tools and equipment for safety and mechanical defects. Assists with City sponsored functions and special events; responds to after hours call-outs as assigned. Responds to questions and concerns from the general public; provides information as is appropriate and resolves public service complaints. Assists other Public Works maintenance units when required. Establishes positive working relationships with representatives of community organizations, state/local agencies, City management and staff and the public.

Working Conditions: 

Position requires sitting, standing, walking on level and slippery surfaces, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, grasping and making repetitive hand movement in the performance of daily duties. The position requires near and far vision when inspecting work and operating assigned equipment. The ability to lift, carry and push tools, equipment and supplies weighing 25 pounds or more. Additionally, the incumbent in this outdoor position works in all weather conditions, including wet, hot, and cold. The incumbent may use chemicals which may expose the employee to fumes, dust, and air contaminants. The nature of the work also requires the incumbent to climb ladders, use power and noise producing tools and equipment, drive motorized vehicles and heavy equipment, and work in heavy vehicle traffic conditions. The incumbent may be required to respond to after hours emergency call-outs and perform routine standby duties.

SMART is the San Francisco Bay Area's newest transit system serving Marin and Sonoma counties. We began revenue service in August 2017 and were the first new railroad in the country to begin service with Positive Train Control installed. We are seeking experienced and motivated individuals who enjoy the challenge of creating new processes and systems. Under direction, the Signal Technician is responsible for maintenance and repair of grade crossing warning devices, signaling and SMART's Positive Train Control system, rail safety communication systems and car borne signal components. This position will perform maintenance on railway signal and communications equipment such as track signals, Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras, positive train control equipment, fiber optic links, programmable multiplexer servers, stand alone computers, power supplies and associated communications equipment.

SMART is a commuter rail system located in Marin and Sonoma counties in Northern California. We are seeking experienced and motivated individuals who want to make a contribution to their community and enjoy working in a fast-paced, team oriented environment. 

Under general supervision, the Vehicle Maintenance Technician position performs skilled preventative, scheduled and unscheduled maintenance, troubleshooting, primary and secondary repair and modification to mechanical, electro-mechanical, pneumatic, and hydraulic equipment and components found on commuter rail diesel multiple unit (DMU) vehicles and supporting systems.

This is a journey level classification performing skilled preventive maintenance, scheduled, unscheduled and emergency repair and modification on all mechanical, electrical, pneumatic and hydraulic systems and components for the District's revenue vehicles, including related subsystems and components as required by manufacturer maintenance and servicing manuals, Federal and State regulations for locomotive and passenger car maintenance and inspection and District vehicle maintenance procedures.

Inspects, troubleshoots, adjusts and repairs DMU subsystems.

Per Federal Railroad Administration regulations, performs maintenance tasks as specified and scheduled in SMART's DMU inspection, testing and maintenance plan including: daily passenger car/locomotive brake tests; periodic brake equipment maintenance; periodic carborne signaling tests; and passenger car fire safety and on-board emergency equipment and emergency exits inspection, testing and maintenance.

Assures quality control using SMART's Maintenance Management Information System to maintain proper records and generate reports.

Follow FRA regulations applicable to railroad workers.

This position will be responsible for work activities primarily on the Swing and Grave shifts, weekends, and holidays to ensure safe and efficient transportation to the public.

 Position Details:

• Base hourly wage: $46.79 per hour.
• This position is represented by the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAMAW).

Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit (SMART) is a new commuter rail system located in Marin and Sonoma Counties. We are seeking two full-time Code Compliance Officers to perform specialized inspections and enforcement of ordinances, regulations and laws governing the transit system. This position is non-sworn and unarmed.

Code Compliance Officers hold limited enforcement authority and are responsible for enforcing ordinances and laws approved by the SMART Board of Directors. Considerable judgment is required in meeting emergency situations, enforcing regulations and in coordination with other personnel and agencies. Ordinances are enforced by the issue of citations and arrests are occasionally necessary. This position is required to prepare incident/arrest reports and other forms either written or using a computer. Code Compliance Officers will be required to testify in court when subpoenaed and may work varied shifts.

In performing their duties, Code Compliance Officers will be called upon to assist and provide information to patrons and the public and ensure the safety of passengers on platforms and in parking lots. This position is classified as a Public Officer under the law with powers of arrest. A primary responsibility is to enforce the fare ordinance by performing unannounced random inspection of fares onboard trains and in paid fare zones. The ability to speak, read and write Spanish is highly desirable.

Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit (SMART) is the Bay Area's newest transit service providing commuter rail transportation to Marin and Sonoma Counties. We are seeking experienced and motivated individuals who enjoy working with new equipment, creating new processes and systems, and motivating a staff to maintain and operate a first class public service. The Vehicle Maintenance Supervisor position is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day activities of a vehicle maintenance operation in a commuter rail environment. This position will provide hands on supervision of the vehicle maintenance technician staff and will be responsible for work activities primarily on the Swing and Grave shifts, weekends, and holidays to ensure safe and efficient transportation to the public.

Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

• Monitors quality of work.

• Independently performs varied and complex inspection and diagnostic work.

• Reads and interprets schematics, service and safety manuals including schematic symbols, electrical drawings and circuit operations.

• Troubleshoots, diagnoses, repairs and/or overhauls electronic, electrical and mechanical systems for train sets and support equipment.

• Oversees and participates in vehicle maintenance.

• Reports on failures of components.

• Assures quality control using SMART’s Maintenance Information System (MIS) to maintain proper records and generate reports.

• Actively reviews and analyzes maintenance activity reports for trends in repairs, equipment failures and, parts usage; to determine if corrective action is needed.

• May perform Vehicle Technician duties as necessary.

• Assigns specific tasks to subordinate staff using the SMART work order system, including withdrawal of parts and materials from the storeroom and checks tasks upon completion for accuracy of work and closure of work orders. Actively supports ongoing skill building for Vehicle Maintenance Technicians by providing periodic classroom training for certification and skills enhancement.

• Prepares, issues and collects daily operational documents.

• Monitors performance of subordinate staff and ensures adherence to SMART, FRA, CPUC standards and regulations.

• Reviews and evaluates work and makes effective suggestions and recommendations.

• Safely operates train sets and other vehicles in the course of performing assigned duties.

• References parts catalogues and other sources to determine correct parts for specific applications.

• References manufacturer schematics (manual and online) to resolve maintenance issues.

• May be assigned Storeroom Supervisor duties.

• Maintains work area in a clean and orderly fashion.

• Safely operates equipment.

• Defines and Coordinates all equipment movements inside the Operation Maintenance Facility limits.

• Performs other related duties as required.

The SMART District is seeking a MAXIMO specialist (Railroad Information Systems Specialist) to join our Operations team! The Railroad Information Systems Specialist is responsible for all activities in support of the Operations Department Maintenance Management Information System (MMIS), MAXIMO, as well as computer systems support for the Operations Department. The Specialist works with Operations Department management to align MMIS and Operations technology solutions with business strategies. This position ensures that the MAXIMO system and all other Operations Department IT systems are working properly at all times and that all department work flows meet system requirements. This position carries two overall fields of responsibility. The first is administration of the Maintenance Management Information System (MAXIMO) and the second is providing IT support of all Operations Department systems.

Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit (SMART), the Bay Area’s newest transit system, seeks an experienced Assistant Engineer to perform field and office engineering work in support of SMART's Train Control Systems. As Assistant Engineer for Rail Systems you will act as an assistant to the Manager of Train Control Systems by participating in the design, construction and implementation of a variety of systems engineering projects related to train control, grade crossing warning systems and networking. This is a term-limited position whose duration may vary depending upon the needs of the District's projects. This is a full-time position and is benefits eligible.
