THE POSITION

Under supervision of the Public Works Manager, the Maintenance Worker I performs entry level unskilled, semi-skilled, or skilled labor in construction, maintenance, and related service activities applied to the areas of general landscaping, grounds maintenance and street maintenance.

 TYPICAL TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Grounds Maintenance:  Operate mowers and other equipment and tools for purposes of cutting grass, trimming trees and shrubs, and planting and transplanting flowers, bulbs, shrubs, and trees.
• Storm Prevention Maintenance:  Assist in cleaning ditches, culverts, and storm drains.
• Street Maintenance: Assist in repainting of pavement markings, basic pothole, and street repair; installation and repair of street signs and markers; mixing and application of Class III pesticide materials.
• Vehicle/Equipment Maintenance:  Assist in the care, maintenance and cleaning of vehicles, tools, and equipment.
• General:  Contact residents concerning maintenance and service problems; refer complaints and requests to proper supervisory personnel. Assist supervisory personnel in preparing and maintaining proper records and logs. Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other City employees and the public using principles of good customer service.

QUALIFICATIONS

The general knowledge of basic construction methods, materials and terminology, standard hand tools, light equipment, and light vehicles; general knowledge of basic safety precautions and practices necessary in working with hand tools, light equipment, and vehicles; general knowledge of basic methods and practices involved in the care of shrubs, trees and flowers. Ability to learn technically complex construction and maintenance procedures in water systems, streets, parks and building maintenance; use hand and power tools; perform heavy manual labor for extended periods of time under inclement weather conditions; work alone or with small groups.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Possession of a valid California driver's license and ability to maintain a satisfactory driving history.

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

Completion of high school or its equivalent, or completion of a trade or vocational school.  Some directly related experience is desirable.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

• Monthly Salary: $4,855 to $6,269 per month. Placement within the range will be based upon the selected candidate’s experience and salary history.
• Health/Medical Benefit: Health/Medical Benefit: Choice of coverage with Kaiser or Blue Shield. The City pays 80% of monthly premiums at each coverage level. In lieu of medical coverage, the City will contribute $400 (employee only coverage) or $500 (employee + 1 coverage) or $600 (family coverage) in cash or a pre-tax contribution into a MissionSquare Retirement 457 deferred compensation plan.
• Dental Coverage: City-paid dental plan for employee and eligible dependents.
• Vision Care: City-paid vision plan for employee and eligible dependents.
• Retirement: CalPERS enrollment in either 2%@60 (Classic Member) or 2%@62 (PEPRA New Member)
• MissionSquare Deferred Compensation & Roth IRA Plans: Voluntary plans available to all employees
• Retirement Health Savings Program: City contributes $100/month.
• Life Insurance: City provided life insurance coverage ($50,000 coverage).

• Vacation: Earned at the rate of 12 days per year, increasing with service years.

 SELECTION

At least thirty (30) of the most highly qualified applicants meeting the minimum qualifications will be subjected to a written test.  You will be notified of your scheduled testing time and location. Those passing the written test will be invited to an oral interview.  Applicants must receive at least 70% total score on the written exam and oral interview to be placed on the eligibility list.

THE POSITION

The Water Resources Instrument Control Technician installs, operates, maintains, calibrates, and repairs computer hardware, process instrumentation, and telemetry equipment; de-bugs, modifies, and customizes software; modifies, maintains, and repairs all components of a programmable logic controller (PLC) based supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems/distributed control systems; and performs other duties as assigned.

Examples of duties and responsibilities may include:

• Installs, calibrates, programs, maintains, and repairs instruments, PLC based system/distributed control system components, meters, analyzers, recorders, control and feed systems, computers, monitors, printers, transducers, microprocessors, and data transmission systems
• Maintains and repairs electronics, electrical, pneumatic, mechanical, and hydraulic systems, laboratory and safety equipment including gas detection, alarm systems, pH and DO meters;
• Analyzes and modifies computer programs to optimize plant operations and operator convenience
• Assists system users in solving data and systems problems and suggests alternative methods of operation

Under general or direct supervision at the lower level and under direction at the higher level, incumbents perform varied professional technical, analytical, and administrative tasks in providing staff support to departments and divisions to; perform contract administration functions; compile and maintain records; conduct special studies, surveys, and research assignments in a variety of project, program, service, and/or operational procedures; and, to perform related work as required.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS:

The Sustainability Analyst I is the entry-level class in the Sustainability Analyst series. Incumbents in this class provide varied professional clerical and technical support in the administration of solid waste, recycling, organics and related sustainability programs.

The Sustainability Analyst II is the journey-level class in the Sustainability Analyst series. Incumbents are expected to be fully competent in all major solid waste and recycling program functions and able to independently perform assignments.

Incumbents at both levels are required to have an in-depth and comprehensive knowledge of the policies and procedures necessary to achieve program results.

Positions in the Sustainability Analyst series are flexibly staffed. Incumbents may advance to the higher level after gaining the knowledge, skill, experience, licenses, and certifications which meet the qualifications for and demonstrating the ability to perform the work of the higher-level class.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES (illustrative only): 

• Perform research, field investigations and statistical analyses related to integrated solid waste management including waste reduction, reuse, recycling, and composting; compile and analyze data; identify and evaluate discrepancies, and proactively find solutions; formulate recommendations and viable alternatives; prepare, deliver, and/or present a variety of oral and/or written reports. 
• Assist in developing and conducting special projects, studies, surveys, and research assignments, policy, services, public education and outreach, data management, contract administration, for an office, department or division, as assigned. 
• Designs and develops a variety of materials and activities to promote, implement, and evaluate assigned sustainability and environmental programs in a manner that will enhance public awareness, educate citizens to relevant environmental issues, and encourage proactive and cooperative problem-solving activities. 
• Works with program staff on contract administration, program development, maintenance and continuous improvement. 
• Provide sustainability related technical assistance to city departments, divisions, staff, the public, community organization and businesses. 
• Analyze and initiate recommendations to develop, improve, and/or ensure legislation compliance for department or division programs, systems, procedures, and methods of operation. 
• Organizes and participates in assigned program area activities, including contract management and compliance, customer service and outreach, data collection and analysis, and presentation of technical and specialized data. 
• Assist in the implementation and maintenance of programs, services, systems, policies, processes, procedures, manuals, and forms for use in operation; provide personnel training on related areas. 
• Assist in the development, coordination, and monitoring of the department or division budget; research and evaluate costs; provide budget tracking tasks as required. 
• Participate in administering contracts with contractors, subcontractors and consultants, ensure documents and reports comply with City contract standards; monitor programs for compliance with applicable scopes of service, rules, regulations, laws, and policies. 
• Represent the City and/or department in interdepartmental, community, civic and professional meetings, public forums, and conferences as required; make presentations as necessary. 
• Builds and maintains positive working relationships with coworkers, other City employees, other organizations and their representatives, and the general public, exhibiting effective customer service and communication skills. 
• Participates with other City departments, community service providers, consultants, other jurisdictions and agencies in sustainability and environmental program development and coordination efforts as well as legislative advocacy and education. 
• Monitor and coordinate the daily operation of assigned functional area; perform detail-oriented work and maintain accurate records, systems, processes, and statistics; evaluate using appropriate metrics. 
• Develops and maintains databases, contract compliance tracking records, and forms as needed. 
• May conduct presentations related to City's sustainability and solid waste and recycling programs and services upon request. 
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

The City of Berkeley invites you to apply for the position of Camp Maintenance Mechanic (Non-Career Intermittent) in the Parks, Recreation and Waterfront Department! In this role, you will have the opportunity to keep our camps running smoothly by performing both routine and heavy, physical work in the construction, maintenance, repair and cleaning of camp facilities. You'll operate a variety of hand and power tools to perform preventive maintenance and repair.

Our two overnight camps are located near South Lake Tahoe and Yosemite. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

A typical way of gaining the knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position is: Equivalent to graduation from high school, and one (1) year of experience in construction and maintenance.

State of California Drinking Water Treatment Certifications (Grade 1 or 2) desirable. Must possess and maintain a valid California non-commercial (Class C) driver's license, and have a satisfactory driving record. Must possess sufficient strength and stamina to lift and carry objects weighing up to 80 pounds and be able to perform sustained heavy physical labor. Must be willing to work outdoors in all weather conditions and on off-hour shifts in emergency situations.

California Education Code Section 10911.5 requires that all public recreation program employers must fingerprint all persons having direct contact with a minor. The City does not hire persons who have been convicted of felony drug, sexual assault or physical assault crimes.
