Under the supervision and general direction of the District Engineer, this student engineering position  performs a variety of basic technical civil engineering duties such as mapping, data entry, review of residential and commercial developments, and supporting capital projects. Responsibilities include assisting the Associate Engineer with project management, plan review, fee calculations, permit issuance, maintaining engineering records, conducting field surveys, site inspections, and data analysis. Responsibilities also include assisting the Engineering Technician in GIS and AutoCAD related projects as needed.

Other related duties may be assigned as needed.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
The Engineering Intern is a part-time hourly/non-exempt position that performs varied tasks and assists the Engineering Team with applied research, inspections, and administrative support functions as part of the learning experience in conjunction with educational coursework leading to an advanced degree in Engineering.

Examples of Duties

Duties include, but are not limited to the following:

• Performs general GIS/AutoCAD map updates and modifications including the collection of GPS data points.
• Performs supervised plan checks on new development, capital projects, remodels, and tenant improvements for compliance with State laws and Regulations and modern construction techniques.
• Confers with property owners and contractors to explain requirements and to induce compliance to Regulations.
• Maintains electronic and paper records of changes of plans and specifications, manages the data necessary for establishing sewer connection permits and changes and maintains related records.
• Performs basic drafting work, laying out and correcting of maps, plans and diagrams.
• Prepares reports, spreadsheets, databases, graphs, tables, and other supporting project related documentation, records, and notes. 
• Assists District Engineer with the management and successful completion of Capital Improvement projects, Recycled Water projects, Flow Equalization land development and consolidation efforts;
• Assist homeowners and developers in the administration and calculation of reimbursement agreements and annexation into the main sewer line system.
• Assists with the review of plans and specifications for a variety of engineering related projects and initiatives.
• Assists with creating, maintaining, and updating Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for computer operations related to functional areas of operations.
• Provide general and specific information to developers, contractors, design consultants, the public, and staff on specifications, ordinances, and policies.
• Performs varied mathematical computations.
• Ensures safety and health procedures and precautions are adhered to, corrects unsafe work conditions/practices and/or reports unsafe work conditions/practices to assigned supervisory or managerial staff.
• Performs related duties as assigned

Additional Requirements
Knowledge of:

• Basic civil engineering principles and related terminology.
• Applicable regulations. laws. specifications. engineering principles. codes. policies, and methods of materials and equipment used in surveying, pipeline construction, engineering, inspection, field and office practices.
• Methods of preparing and interpreting maps, charts, graphs, plans, and technical reports.
• Methods of interpreting and presenting technical data verbally and in reports.

• Exercise good analytical and organizational skills.
• Successfully utilize Microsoft Office, GIS. (AutoCAD), other modern engineering software programs. and database platforms including Access and SQL server.
• Maintain accurate records of work performed.
• Remain current on emerging technologies related to engineering, administration, construction, inspection, and information technology.

Essential duties require the following physical abilities and work environment:

• Ability to work in a standard office environment and drive to different sites as needed. Ability to work in environments with some exposure to noise, the outdoors, and mechanical hazards.

The City of Pacifica is seeking a seasoned, collaborative, and forward-thinking leader to serve as Deputy Director of Public Works - Field Services & Engineering. This senior management role offers the opportunity to guide essential municipal infrastructure programs that support public safety, community livability, environmental stewardship, and the long-term resilience of a beautiful coastal city.

As second-in-command of the Public Works Department, the Deputy Director provides strategic, administrative, technical, and operational leadership for both the Field Services and the Engineering Division. The Department of Public Works is seeking experienced individuals for the position of Road Equipment Supervisor. 

The ideal candidate will have at least 4 years' of increasing responsible experience overseeing a crew involved in the operation of heavy equipment in road construction and maintenance activities, as well as experience in planning, organizing, coordinating, directing and participating in projects involving heavy equipment in construction and maintenance of roadways, bridges, channels, landscape areas, and storm drains and sewers. Additionally, the ideal candidate will have experience utilizing e-mail, word processing, spreadsheets, databases, project management, maintenance management systems.

 

Examples Of Duties

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Plan, prioritize, and coordinate projects with the Road Maintenance Managers.
• Supervise, train, evaluate and instruct a group of equipment operators, drivers, and laborers.
• Ensure compliance with safety practices and procedures.
• Estimate and order materials.
• Assist the Vehicle and Equipment Manager with writing specifications for new equipment.
• Coordinate with Vehicle and Equipment Section on equipment repairs to ensure equipment is available when needed.
• Make work assignments, requesting additional labor as needed.
• Oversee projects such as road repair, major overlays and repaving projects.
• Serve as point of contact for Road Supervisors and the public if there are questions or concerns about work being performed.
• Make requests for appropriate training and new equipment.
• As a working supervisor, perform the more difficult or complex Operator tasks.
• Perform related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:
Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to qualify is:
 
 Four years of experience in the operation of rollers, bulldozers, backhoes, mowers and graders.
 
Knowledge of:

• Supervisory principles and practices, including work planning, scheduling, employee training and evaluation.
• Basic mathematics.
• Provision of the California Vehicle Code applying to the operation of vehicles.
• Safety practices in the operation of heavy construction equipment.
• Capabilities of all types of heavy equipment.
• Road maintenance and construction operations, materials and procedures.
• Operation of and preventative maintenance for trucks and road maintenance equipment.

Skill/Ability to:

• Plan, supervise and inspect the work of others.
• Determine personnel, material and equipment requirements for construction or maintenance projects.
• Read blueprints, read and interpret grade stakes, and use instruments to check grades.
• Operate a wide variety of complex road construction and maintenance equipment and light and medium duty trucks including graders, bulldozers, large loaders, backhoes, hydraulic excavators, rollers and mowers.
• Make minor adjustments and emergency repairs to equipment.
• Perform road maintenance duties which require strength, agility and endurance.
• Work courteously and effectively with the public and with co-workers.
• Follow oral and written instructions.
• Climb, bend, stand and walk for extended periods of time.
• Lift and carry equipment and supplies used in construction and maintenance work.
• Meet Department of Transportation (DOT) drug testing requirements and standards.

Licensure/Certification: 

• Possession of a Class A California-issued Commercial Driver License or equivalent with tank vehicle endorsement.

Education and Experience

Education: Equivalent to completion of the twelfth (12th) grade, supplemented by specialized training in backflow prevention, cross-connection control, water distribution, or a related field.

Experience: Three (3) years of increasingly responsible field and/or office experience related to water distribution and cross-connection control, including inspections, data collection, public contact, and the
interpretation and application of policies, procedures, rules, and regulations.

Licenses and Certifications

• Possession of a valid California Driver’s License and a satisfactory driving record to be maintained throughout employment.
• Possession of a valid Backflow Prevention Assembly Tester Certificate issued by the American Water Works Association (AWWA) or Northern California Backflow Prevention Association (NCBPA), to be maintained throughout employment.
• Possession of a valid Cross-Connection Control Specialist Certificate issued by the NCBPA, to be maintained throughout employment.
• Possession of a valid Grade II (D-2) Water Distribution Operator Certificate issued by the State of California Water Resource Control Board, to be maintained throughout employment.

Selection Process
Applications will be reviewed for relevant education, experience, training and other job related qualifications. Based upon a review of employment applications received, a limited number of the qualified applicants will be invited to participate in the examination process.

The process will consist of an Oral Panel Interview (weighted 60%) and a practical exercise (weighted 40%). An eligibility list will be established from those who pass the examination process with a score of 70% or higher. Current and future vacancies may be filled from this list. The list will remain in effect for at least one year unless exhausted sooner. 

The department will invite the most qualified candidates from the eligibility list to a final department interview. The Public Works department will make the hiring decision.

The City of San Mateo Public Works Department is Looking for a

Wastewater Treatment Plant Electrical Technician

The Department

The Public Works Department’s Environmental Services Division (ESD) is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the City’s 15.7 million gallon per day (MGD) conventional activated sludge wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). The WWTP serves a population of more than 140,000 with an annual operating budget in excess of $15 million and has a staff of 28 professional and technical personnel. Upgrades currently in progress to the WWTP include new liquids treatment process facilities consisting of new headworks, primary treatment, and biological nutrient removal/membrane bioreactor (BNR/MBR) process.  When you join the Public Works Department, you will work among collaborative and energetic colleagues who share a passion for serving our San Mateo citizens and improving the community in which we live and work. The Position

• Install, maintain, repair and research a variety of supervisory controls and replacement electrical components that are part of advanced wastewater treatment processes such as aeration, filtration, disinfection and dichlorination, sludge dewatering, odor control, and an environmental laboratory.
• Perform wiring required for the installation of electronic equipment; electrical conductors in conduits; splice high and low voltage cables utilizing hand taping and pre- molded splice kits.
• Design, install, maintain, repair, test and construct electrical assemblies.
• Troubleshoot plant electrical systems, controls and related process equipment. Provide technical support for other work groups within Public Works.
• Specify, install, program, and repair various types of variable frequency motor drive systems.
• Fabricate, maintain, install, service, and calculate power load distributions to various motors and related equipment.
• Install and repair programmable logic controllers and install related hardware and software for control systems in conjunction with controls technician.
• Maintain and repair automatic control valves and associated control functions.
• Implement preventive maintenance and repair on motors from fractional to over 400 horsepower. Record and calculate current requirements for new electrical installations.
• Troubleshoot, perform inspections, preventive maintenance and repairs on industrial switchgear and high voltage equipment such as transformers, breakers, circuits, switches, relays, regulators and distribution panels.
• Specify, install, and inspect various types of conduit; isolate breakers and switches for major repairs; coordinate repairs and scheduled outages with operations staff.
• Conduct surveys to gather field data.
• Use aerial lifts, scaffolding and ladders.
• Prepare requisitions and associated documents for purchase of repair parts and supplies.
• Maintain accurate records of work performed, materials used, and associated costs.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

The WWTP Electrical Technician receives general supervision from the WWTP Maintenance Superintendent or higher level personnel and exercises technical and functional supervision over assigned technical and maintenance personnel.
