Under general supervision, the Ferry Mechanic performs preventative, scheduled and unscheduled maintenance, trouble-shooting, repair, and modifications on structural, mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, piping and control systems found on ferry vessels and passenger terminals; performs related work as assigned. Responsibilities include record keeping and written verification of work accomplished.

Salary Range:  
Day Shift:               $56.32 per hour
Swing Shift:           $56.32 per hour + 10% differential pay
Graveyard Shift:    $56.32 per hour + 15% differential pay

Essential Responsibilities

• Working with computers on a daily basis for work scheduling, work order entry and work order reporting on the Districts electronic maintenance system in addition to notifications and communications.
• Conducts tests, analyses and measurements as directed to diagnose any unusual, erratic or malfunctioning occurrence in any shipboard or terminal system or component.
• Reports any unusual wear patterns, noise, pressure, temperature, or changes in voltage, current, cycles, resistance or any other indication of potential malfunction.
• References manufacturer schematics including blueprints, drawings and specifications to resolve maintenance issues.
• References parts catalogues and other sources to determine correct parts for specific applications.
• Performs inspections, preventive maintenance, repairs and overhauls as directed.
• Documents and records work performed and parts and materials used in the electronic maintenance system. 
• Reports all safety hazards and corrects unsafe situations immediately where possible.
• Immediately reports to supervisor any potential maintenance problem or condition which could cause a possible schedule delay.
• Maintains all work areas, special tools and equipment used in performing maintenance function, in a clean and orderly manner.
• Operate a forklift and other equipment/vehicles safely.
• Interacts on a regular basis with vessel operations personnel.
• Adheres to the safety and health rules and safe working practices applicable to job.
• Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with District employees, customers, vendors and all others contacted during the course of work using principles of excellent customer service.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Prepares and processes the full cycle semi-monthly payroll;
• Sets up and maintains employee master file records in the payroll system;

• Prepares spreadsheets to record and track disbursements;
• Creates accounts payable claims for payment of payroll liabilities and assists in reconciling payroll clearing accounts;
• Tracks accrued payroll tax liability, monitors deadlines and prepares tax deposits;

• Receives and researches requirements for wage assignment orders and tax levies and implements related deductions;

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The ability to maintain effective audio/visual discrimination and perception to the degree necessary for the successful performance of assigned duties. 

WORKING CONDITIONS

This position requires prolonged sitting, standing, walking, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, squatting and stooping in the performance of daily activities.  The position also requires grasping, repetitive hand movement and fine coordination in preparing statistical reports and data using a computer keyboard.  Additionally, the position requires near vision in reading correspondence, statistical data and using a computer.  Acute hearing is required when providing phone service and communicating in person.  The need to lift, drag and push files, computer reports or other materials weighing up to 25 pounds also is required.

The Department of Public Works is seeking highly motivated individuals with great technical and interpersonal skills to join our team as Automotive Service Workers.
 

Under general supervision, Automotive Service Workers perform a variety of semi-skilled automotive and equipment maintenance tasks which include the full range of lubrication and minor repair services, and routine service-related duties such as pumping gas and changing oil; perform skilled sub-journey mechanic work and learn journey-level mechanics under the direct supervision of an Automotive Mechanic or Automotive Service Supervisor.

 

Automotive Service Workers are assigned to the Vehicle and Equipment Services Section of the Department of Public Works. The Vehicle and Equipment Services Section maintains, inspects, services, and repairs County motor vehicles including school and other buses, trucks, equipment, Sheriff's Office vehicles, and motor pool vehicles. Our service and repair stations are located in Redwood City and San Mateo.

 

Ideal candidates for this position will possess:

• At least one year of verifiable professional work experience in Automotive Services and experience with hybrid and basic computer diagnostic.

• Clean and pack wheel bearings, and U-joints.
• Inspect and replace batteries, cables and terminals.
• Inspect, adjust or replace door, hood, trunk latches; install seat belts.
• Replace and adjust headlights and taillights; replace minor parts such as light bulbs, fuses and windshield wiper blades, radiator and gas tank caps.
• Service vehicles with gas or propane, oil, water, coolant, transmission and brake fluids.
• Wash and clean vehicles; vacuum interiors; steam clean chassis, engines and other components.
• Inventory and stock supplies, provide order list to Supervisor; pick up and deliver auto parts.
• Repair and replace parts of transmission and differential and parts of engine.
• Perform BIT, school bus and related mandated inspections.
• Test drive vehicles after inspection and repair.
• Receive complaints concerning vehicles and prepare service request forms.
• Direct the work of seasonal, extra help, trustees, and work furlough workers assigned to motor pool.
• Observe safety regulations, change and prevent hazardous situations, bring hazards to supervisor's attention.
• Drive and operate tow truck and other medium sized trucks; drive and operate forklift; transport vehicles to various locations.
• Complete repair order forms noting parts and labor hours used.
• Empty trash, sweep and mop floors, clean sinks, mirrors and auto equipment in assigned work area.
• Prepare trip tickets for vehicles and dispatch to County employees.
• Perform related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Licensure/Certification:

• Possession of a class C California driver license or equivalent.
• Must obtain a class B California driver license or equivalent within one year of appointment.

 

Education and Experience:

Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to qualify is:

• One year of experience performing automotive service work.

 

Knowledge of:

• Methods, tools, materials, and equipment used in servicing motor vehicles.
• Common automotive equipment cleaning methods.
• Common automotive parts and supplies.
• Proper condition of various auto parts, and procedures for ensuring proper condition and operation.
• Electrical, braking, air conditioning and heating, suspension and cooling system.
• Service and repair of hybrid and alternate fuel vehicles. 

 

Skill/Ability to: 

• Perform general service work on vehicles.
• Perform heavy manual labor.
• Follow oral and written instructions.
• Follow safety rules, procedures, and practices.
• Use common automotive service tools and equipment including air wrenches, lifting jacks, tach and dwell meter, cooling system tester, and battery generator tester, brake bleeder, cooling system testers, and volt-ohm meters.

• Check proper condition of tires, belts, hoses, wiper blades and batteries.
• Change tires.
• Perform simple arithmetic.

The examination process will consist of a scored relevant Training and Experience (T&E) (weight: pass/fail) based solely on the candidates' responses to the supplemental questions. Applicants who receive a passing score in the T&E evaluation will be invited to a Performance Exam (weight: 100%). Because of this screening process, all applicants who meet the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed advancement to the next phase of the examination process. Depending on the number of applicants, an application appraisal of education and experience may be used in place of other examinations. All examinations will be given in San Mateo County, California and applicants must participate at their own expense.

The work assignments can vary from field maintenance to the office environment. Incumbents are encouraged to use various software programs and applications for field verification, audits and reports. Our service area is “right sized” for a wide range of field activities. Ideal candidates will be exposed to small maintenance and customer service tasks to complex system improvements and repairs. Water System Operators will be exposed to GIS use and training in addition to regulatory structure and reporting. You will find a supportive atmosphere that will assist in reaching common goals in water distribution and service. Water System Operator I

This is the entry-level class in the Water System Operator classification series. This class is responsible for providing support for assigned water operations and programs. Initially under close supervision, incumbents with basic maintenance experience learn City infrastructure, systems and facilities, use of tools and equipment, and a wide variety of practices and procedures. Positions at this level usually perform most of the duties required of the positions at the II level, but are not expected to function at the same skill level and usually exercise less independent discretion and judgment in matters related to work procedures and methods. Work is usually supervised while in progress and fits an established structure or pattern. Exceptions or changes in procedures are explained in detail as they arise. As experience is gained, assignments become more varied and are performed with greater independence.

 

Water System Operator II

This is the journey-level class in the Water System Operator classification series responsible for performing the full range of technical duties required to ensure that City infrastructure, systems, and facilities to which assigned are maintained in a safe and effective working condition and provide the highest level of safety for public use. Responsibilities include inspecting and attending to assigned areas in a timely manner, and performing a wide variety of tasks in the maintenance and repair of assigned facilities and systems. Positions at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit. This class is distinguished from Senior Water System Operator in that the latter is responsible for technical and functional supervision of lower-level maintenance staff and for performing the most complex duties assigned to the series.

 

Senior Water System Operator 

This is the advanced journey-level in the water system operator classification series that performs the most complex duties required to ensure that City infrastructure, systems, and facilities are maintained in a safe and effective working condition and provide the highest level of safety for public use. Responsibilities include inspecting and attending to assigned areas in a timely manner, and performing a wide variety of tasks in the maintenance and repair of assigned facilities and systems. Incumbents regularly work on tasks that are varied and complex, requiring considerable discretion and independent judgment. Positions in this classification rely on experience and judgment to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the assigned section. The work involves problem-solving of unique issues or increasingly complex problems without precedent and/or structure. Assignments are given with general guidelines and incumbents are responsible for establishing objectives, timelines, and methods to deliver work products. This class is distinguished from the chief water operator in that the latter is the full supervisory-level class in the series responsible for organizing, assigning, supervising, and reviewing the work of assigned staff involved in water quality and operations.

Position Summary

The District’s Engineering Department has an immediate opening for a paid Civil Engineering student intern. This internship program provides students with the opportunity to transition from college to the full-time workforce through hands-on training and knowledge sharing in both office and job site settings. Students can either work part-time or full-time depending on their class schedule. At its discretion, the District may offer a full-time entry level position of Junior Civil Engineer to recent graduates who filed job applications with the District and met the minimum requirements of the position. The City of Belmont Parks & Recreation Department is recruiting for the position of Recreation Leaders for Summer 2026. Recreation Leader Requirement 

• Must be age 15 or older by June 1, 2026.
• Must be available for paid training June 10 - June 12, 2026.
• Must be available for 2026 summer camp season June 15 - August 7, 2026.
• Camp closed Friday, July 3 for the Holiday.

 

Recreation leaders will

• Work with campers ages 4 ½ to 13 years of age.

• Be able to work any assigned shift with varying hourly schedules (Monday-Friday).

• Participate in pre-summer training sessions, camp set-up and clean-up.

• Lead games, songs, arts & crafts, sports, and large group projects all summer long.

• Be outspoken and demonstrate good role model to the staff and campers.

• Be enthusiastic and enjoy working outdoors and being with children.

• Come with ideas for summer activities and a willingness to participate and lead activities.

• Provide guidance, support, and motivation to all campers.

• Communicate with guardians of campers, providing updates where required and answering questions about camp.

 

Salary (depending on experience) and Hours:

Recreation Leader / Senior Recreation Leader $18.95 - $25.34

Recreation Specialist I/II (Group Leads) $22.94 - $30.66

This is a part-time position.  Hours will range from 19 to 37 hours per week with no weekend shifts.
