THE POSITION:

The City of San Rafael Community Services Department is seeking a full-time Custodian.  Under the supervision of the Recreation Supervisor, the Custodian ensures that the Community Services Department facilities are clean and safe for department classes, programs, and rentals.  The Custodian is responsible for performing routine cleaning and maintenance duties, maintaining inventory of supplies, providing direction to facility attendants, supporting department staff, and providing customer service.

This position performs the following essential job duties:

• Assists Senior Recreation Supervisor with hiring, training, scheduling and evaluating seasonal personnel; assigns work and provides direction as necessary to facility attendant team.  Serves as the point of contact for part-time facility attendants and oversees court appointed community service workers and volunteers.
• Opens and closes facilities, sets up tables, equipment, chairs, bleachers, A/V equipment for events, classes, programs, and rentals.
• Removes trash from parking lot and surrounding park facilities daily.
• Cleans and disinfects rooms, hallways, lobbies, walls, furniture, counters, equipment, restrooms, and other work areas regularly.
• Monitors condition of Department facilities and reports any safety, repair and cleaning concerns appropriately to Recreation Supervisor, Facility Maintenance, or contractor if unable to address issues personally. 
• Occasional touch up painting, minimal woodwork, and deep cleaning is completed by the Custodian.
• Maintains equipment and coordinates required inspections (including but not limited to maintenance and inspection of machinery, kitchen appliances, fire extinguishers, AED equipment, light fixtures, tables, chairs, and program equipment).
• Inventories and orders equipment and supplies needed for facility operations (including but not limited to restroom paper supplies, cleaning supplies, and equipment).
• Sweeps, mops, and vacuums floors regularly.
• Scrubs, oils/waxes and polishes floors as needed.
• Deep cleans carpets as needed.
• Ensures windows are cleaned regularly.
• Dusts and polishes woodwork, lighting fixtures, surfaces and equipment routinely.
• Cleans rugs, carpets, upholstered furniture, and draperies as needed.
• Empties and cleans garbage and recycling cans and ensures proper disposal.
• Replenishes bathroom supplies and replaces light bulbs as needed.
• Transports small equipment, tools, or supplies between departments, City Hall, and local businesses.
• Works at the front desk performing reception duties in relief of other staff members.
• Performs related duties as required.

To be eligible for this position you must have knowledge of:

• Methods, materials and equipment used in the maintenance of buildings and grounds.
• Written and spoken English
• Ability to speak Spanish is desirable.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

• Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent.

• Some custodial experience is preferred.
• Must be able to work evenings, weekends, and some holidays.

CLASS SPECIFICATION
LIBRARY TECHNICIAN III

Definition
Under supervision, performs routine library and clerical work in the areas of public services or materials support, either in acquisition processing and cataloging, or circulation activities, and performs other work as required.

Distinguishing Characteristics
This is the journey-level class in the Library Technician series. This class is distinguished from the Library Technician II in that the Librarian Technician III performs the full range of circulation, acquisitions processing, or similar duties and has greater responsibilities in the areas of materials management. It is distinguished from the Library Associate in that it is primarily concerned with duties related to materials and objects within the library’s collection rather than content within the materials.

Typical Duties
Depending on assignment, duties may include but are not limited to the following:

Uses a computer to enter and retrieve information, locate library materials and charge and discharge materials.

Assists patrons with automatic self-service equipment; demonstrates use of equipment to staff and public; assists patrons with the use of public computers and other electronic equipment.

Education and Experience: Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS), Master of Library Science (MLS), or Master of Science in Library Science (MSLS) degree from an accredited college or university. The Librarian II requires two years of appropriate professional experience working as a professional librarian, preferably in a public library. Must have a valid California driver’s license. Spanish bilingual skills desirable but not required.

 

SALARY RATE:                  Librarian I -  $28.80/hour

                                           Librarian II - $30.25/hour

Class Characteristics

This is the entry-level class in the professional Librarian series and is designed to provide incumbents with the experience and training necessary to plan, organize, and provide library program services at the journey level with a minimum of supervision.  Work may involve assignments in any library service area that requires the application of fundamental library science principles and practices including children’s services, young adult services, adult services, reference, collection development, or cataloging.  Assignments are typically limited in scope and within the design and procedural framework established by higher-level employees.  As knowledge and experience are gained, the work becomes broader in scope; assignments are more varied, and are performed with more independence.  Incumbents may serve as “Person-in-Charge” for assigned shifts.  This class is distinguished from Library Associate in that it has greater responsibilities requiring a broader scope and depth of technical knowledge and professional training.  The class is further distinguished from Librarian II in that the latter is the full journey professional level, capable of performing the full range of assigned functions with considerable independence and judgment.  The Librarian I may promote to Librarian II after gaining sufficient experience to perform competently at the full journey level.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Receives direct supervision from a Senior Building Mechanic and may receive functional supervision and training from a Building Mechanic II.  Exercises no supervision of staff. 

 

Class Characteristics

This is the entry-level class in the facilities maintenance series, characterized by competent performance within a least one skilled trade area.  Incumbents in this class perform a variety but not the full range of skilled and semi-skilled construction, modification, maintenance, and repair duties required to ensure that Library infrastructure, systems, and facilities are maintained in a safe and effective working condition and provide the highest level of safety for public use.  Incumbents must possess general knowledge of building maintenance and/or construction practices, and considerable knowledge of at least one of the following: vessel boiler, electrical, HVAC, refrigeration, carpentry, plumbing, or electronic theory and systems.  Incumbents will receive on the job experience in other building systems.  This class is distinguished from Building Mechanic II in that the latter is the full journey-level in the class series and has attained a higher level of skilled experience in all skilled trades and building systems required to perform facilities maintenance work in the Library.

Class Characteristics

This is the full journey-level class in the facilities maintenance series, characterized by the competent performance within multiple skilled trade areas.  Incumbents perform the full range of skilled construction, modification, maintenance, and repair duties required to ensure that Library infrastructure, systems, and facilities are maintained in a safe and effective working condition and provide the highest level of safety for public use.  Incumbents are expected to work independently and exercise sound judgment and initiative.  Positions at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit.  Incumbents must possess thorough knowledge of two or more building maintenance or construction trade areas, including vessel boiler, electrical, HVAC, refrigeration, carpentry, plumbing, or electronic theory and systems, as well as a considerable knowledge of all other building trades.  This class is distinguished from the Senior Building Mechanic in that the latter has the ultimate responsibility for assigning, supervising and/or contracting all work related to facilities maintenance.
