PROGRAM LEADER (SUMMER CAMP COUNSELOR)

Salary Range: $13.00 to $14.06/hour; non-benefitted position, DOE

QUALIFICATIONS

Applicants must be at least 15 years of age and up, and have experience working with youth in a recreation setting.  Energetic, self-motivated, creative, and organized.  Ability to work as part of a team.

SUPERVISION 
Under the general supervision of the Program Coordinator and direct supervision of the Summer Camp Site Leader, Summer Camp Counselors are responsible for implementing the curriculum for one of the Town’s day camp programs which offer youth and teen daily activities including arts, crafts, games, field trips and special events.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES 

• Plan and lead arts, crafts and games according to the theme of the week. 
• Serve as a mentor and role model to campers. 
• Work as part of a team of leaders. 
• Safely and appropriately supervise campers on off-site field trips. 
• Use positive discipline and communicate effectively with parents/guardians.
• Perform duties within OSHA standards.

PROGRAM ASSISTANT (SUMMER CAMP SITE LEADER)

Salary Range: $14.06 to $17.00/hour; non-benefitted position, DOE

Applicants must be high school graduates, at least 18 years of age, with experience working with youth in a recreation setting.  Energetic, self-motivated, creative, and organized.  Able to work as part of a team.   

SUPERVISION 
Under the general supervision of the Program Coordinator, Summer Camp Site Leaders are responsible for the day to day operations and implementation of curriculum of their assigned summer day camp, which offer youth and teens daily activities including arts, crafts, games, field trips and special events.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES 

• Plan and leads arts, crafts and games according to the theme of the week.
• Serve as a mentor and role model to campers.
• Work as part of a team of camp leaders. 
• Safely and appropriately supervise campers on off-site field trips.

PROGRAM ASSISTANT (SUMMER CAMP SITE MANAGER)

Salary Range: $16.00 to $19.00/hour; non-benefitted position, DOE

QUALIFICATIONS 
Applicants must be high school graduates, at least 20 years of age, and have experience working with youth in a recreation setting.  Energetic, self-motivated, creative, and organized.  Able to work as part of a team.  This is a Monday through Friday, 20 to 37.5-hour position that requires open availability.   

SUPERVISION 
Under the general supervision of the Program Coordinator, the Summer Camp Site Manager is responsible for on-site supervision of staff and participants of multiple camps located at the same site.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES  

• Serve as a mentor and role model to campers.
• Work as part of a team of camp leaders.
• Safely and appropriately supervise campers on off-site field trips.
• Use positive discipline and communicate effectively with parents/guardians.
• Coordinate camp activity rotation schedule and site logistics to ensure efficient operations.
• Maintain adequate inventory of camp supplies and equipment within budgetary guidelines.
• Supervise and mentor Summer Day Camp Site Leaders and Program Leaders, including adherence to Town policies and procedures.
• Participate in weekly Leadership Training Meetings with all Camp Site Leaders.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This is the advanced journey-level and lead class in the Recreation Leader series responsible for leading and directing the activities of subordinate staff within an assigned program area, but may also be assigned to perform difficult and complex support work within a program area.  Incumbents are expected to work independently and exercise judgment and initiative.  This classification is distinguished from Recreation Coordinator in that the latter is responsible for all operational activities within an assigned program area, including serving in an ongoing lead capacity over program staff.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Management reserves the right to add, modify, change, or rescind the work assignments of different positions and to make reasonable accommodations so that qualified employees can perform the essential functions of the job.

1. Assists in the development, promotion, and implementation of a diversified recreation program for all ages in accordance with community needs; evaluates program effectiveness; and recommends changes.
2. Assists in the activities of staff and volunteers; may plan, assign, train, direct, and monitor staff duties.
3. Opens and secures program areas before and after program use; prepares program areas for scheduled recreational activities and events.
4. Leads the operation of recreation/sports camps or other large programs.
5. Provides instruction and conducts classes/activities for program participants.
6. Receives and responds to questions and concerns from patrons; identifies issues and resolves problems or refers to supervisor as appropriate.
7. Directs and leads the work of lower level staff assisting in a particular program area or special event.

9. Inspects and maintains program equipment; ensures that maintenance and repair needs are addressed.

ENVIRONMENTAL ELEMENTS
Incumbents work in both indoor and outdoor environments with moderate to loud noise levels.  May work in controlled temperature conditions, cold and hot temperatures, or inclement weather conditions.  Incumbents will interact with individuals in interpreting and enforcing rules, policies, and procedures.
 
WORKING CONDITIONS
Incumbents may be assigned an irregular work schedule, including weekends, early mornings, evenings, and holidays. 
 
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Must possess: mobility to perform medium physical work; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen, and to operate a vehicle to transport materials and equipment to various sites and offices; hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone or radio.  The classification supports indoor and outdoor recreation programs requiring frequent walking, running, conducting exercises, and related physical activities.  Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard, calculator, or tools and equipment used in assigned program area.  Program activities may require sitting, standing, walking on level and slippery surfaces, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, grasping, and making repetitive hand movement in the performance of daily duties; the need to lift, carry, and push tools, equipment, and supplies weighing up to 40 pounds, or higher weights with assistance and/or the use of proper equipment.
 
QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:

• High School Diploma or GED is required; some college level coursework is desired;

AND

• Two years of relevant part-time recreation program experience, or related work experience.

OR

• Any combination of training, education, and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

POSITION INFORMATION

The LARPD Senior Services Venture Trips department is recruiting a part-time Recreation Leader II - Van Driver to transport participants on local or regional day trips, as well as occasional overnight trips. The qualified candidate will become part of a team of staff that programs, coordinates and executes social destination opportunities for the age 50+ local population. The incumbent will assist with office coverage, customer service, and trip escorts.

Typical duties include:

• Drives a 14 passenger van or other suitable vehicle transporting seniors and persons with disabilities.
• Maintains accurate trip records.
• Provides assistance to passengers, as necessary, to include carrying, loading or unloading passenger's packages, mobility equipment and other belongings.
• Collects tickets.   
• Answers telephones, provides some assistance to office staff.
• Administers first aid, if necessary.
• Performs routine safety check of vehicles; notes and reports safety or mechanical problems.

The Newark Recreation and Community Services Department is looking for multiple Recreational Leader I for our popular Ash Street Summer Program run out of Ash Street Park & Camp Newark that is formerly known as Summer Day Care, which is run out of the Newark Community Center. We are looking for motivated, self-driven individuals that have a passion for working with children and wish to make a difference in a child's life by creating a one of a kind all-day camp experience! Those that are successful in the interview process will be placed in the appropriate camp based on staffing needs, interests, and experience.

Please note that this position requires you to work in an outdoor environment that is subject to warm/hot temperatures, and inclement weather at times.

You must be able to work the following schedule:

Camp Newark: June 8 – August 7, Monday – Friday. The camp runs from 6:45 am – 6:00 pm. There are two shifts for this camp to ensure proper coverage and supervision of all campers. **

Ash Street Summer Program: June 15 – July 31, Monday – Friday. This camp runs from 10:30 am – 3:30 pm.**

Please note that shift preference is not guaranteed and is based on the staffing needs of the program and can change at any time. Please keep this in mind when/if you are planning on attending summer school or taking summer college classes. Further, we will only entertain a (1) week vacation during this program period.

Plan, lead, and implement recreational activities for children 4–17 (primarily 5-12) years of age in recreational programs. Supervise program participants in indoors and outdoors settings

Respond to visitor concerns, operate a cash register, provide correct change, handle credit card transactions, maintain a clean and well-equipped worksite. Works well as part of a team in a fun, fast-paced outdoor environment. Employees are expected to work weekends and holidays.

Team Member

• Assist Team Leader in daily boating operations
• Provide customer service to park visitors related to Central Park boating operations
• Perform routine maintenance on and inspection of boat fleet and equipment
• Educate public on safe boating procedures and park policies
• Assist park visitors and answer questions or resolve visitor concerns in a courteous manner
• Set up and take down boat rental station; take out from and return boats to storage 

Team Leader

Performs all duties of Team Member and also the following:

• Train and supervise Lakefront Team Members
• Operate patrol boat and supervise lake activities
• Ensure safety of park visitors utilizing the lake for boating and fishing
• Enforce park policies pertaining to lake activities

Energetic and responsible leaders are needed to work with youth ages 4-17 (primarily 5-12) in a variety of camp and community service programs. The Camp Specialist is required to plan and implement sports, games, arts-n-crafts, dance and outdoor work projects.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED AND RECEIVED

General supervision is provided by the Camp Director and the Recreation Supervisor

The Camp Director is primarily responsible for general and/or specialty camps, such as Sunnyside Daycamp, Playcamp, Nature Camp, Young Entrepreneur Camp, etc. The Camp Director is responsible for all aspects of camp planning and implementation of camp programming.

The Waterpark Deck Crew provides custodial maintenance and supervision of the Waterpark before, during, and after Waterpark operations.  Work hours may vary but will often be mornings, weekends, weekdays, and holidays.
