THE POSITION

The Water Resources Operator Trainee performs duties engaging in the operation, treatment, reclamation, and disposal of wastewater; operate a variety of equipment used in the continuous operation of a wastewater treatment plant and related facilities; and performs other duties as assigned. This is the trainee level class in the Water Resources Operator series that typically has little or no directly related previous work experience. The incumbent will work under immediate supervision while learning job tasks.

Examples of duties include:

• Reads, records, interprets, and monitors meters, gauges and laboratory test results to assess system functions and determine processing requirements
• Extracts wastewater samples, performs laboratory tests, identifies the treatment adjustments, and operates direct and remote controls to implement treatment changes
• Inspects treatment plant, wells, pump stations, power generators and all related facilities and equipment to assure effective operations are maintained
• Accurately maintains records and documentation, including shift log entries
• Receives service requests and complaints from service users and the public

As experience is gained and qualifications are met, promotional opportunities to advance up to a Water Resources Operator III is possible without having to participate in additional recruitment and testing processes with the City.

• Response to requests for fire hydrant flow and pressure data, as needed for fire sprinkler design.
• Updates of design guidelines and standard details of the water, sanitary sewer, and storm drain systems.

Water Pollution Control Plant Division

• Review of design documents related to wastewater processes and equipment selections.
• Review of capital improvement project (CIP) design memos, plans, and specifications. 
• Collaborate with operations staff to evaluate performance of unit processes at the plant by analyzing data and monitoring trends.
• Assist in-house projects relating to process improvement and maintenance.

Education and Experience:

The minimum qualifications for education and experience can be met in the following way:

Engineer I

• Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in civil engineering, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, or a related field; AND
• Experience in professional or paraprofessional engineering work, some of which shall have been at the level of Engineering Intern or higher.

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

• Building Inspector II - An Associate’s degree or certificate in building inspection is desirable.

Experience:

• Building Inspector I - Four (4) years of journey level experience in one of the major construction trades or two (2) years of recent experience in building inspection or code enforcement.

License or Certificates:

Under general supervision, the Part-Time Office Assistant provides a variety of general clerical and administrative support services for the Recreation and Community Services Department. This is a part-time position and may include a flexible or reduced weekly schedule as determined by the department.

This position performs a range of office support duties such as preparing documents, maintaining records, assisting the public, and supporting departmental projects. The Office Assistant may also be assigned to take photographs at City special events as part of regular job duties. Work is generally guided by established procedures, with supervision available for non-routine tasks.

Hiring for two (2) immediate positions in the Departments of: 

Community Development Department

The Community Development Department is comprised of three divisions: Planning, Building, and Housing and Community Services. In general, the Department guides the ongoing physical development of the community, to ensure that construction conforms to the standards of the City and State. Within the Department, the Planning Division in the Community Development Department is responsible for reviewing proposed development projects in the City as well as Code Enforcement activities to enhance the community’s safety, welfare, quality of life, and economic opportunities. Specific activities within the Division include implementation of the City’s Short-Term Rental program, administration of the 6th Cycle Housing Element, El Camino Real Specific Plan revisions, and Santa Clara Station Area Specific Plan. The Office Specialist III will be essential to the administration and fiscal functions of the Division. This position is responsible for payment processing in compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), compilation and preparation of data with preliminary analysis to support budget and State reporting requirements, and permitting process improvements. This advanced secretarial class is distinguished from other City office support classes in that incumbents normally report to division head or higher City position with responsibilities involving the frequent use of tact, discretion, initiative, and independent judgment.  Responsibilities include regular contact with government officials, City Council or board or commission members, representatives of business or community organizations, the public, and all levels of City personnel to exchange information and explain administrative policies and procedures.

The Office Specialist III works under general supervision and is expected to work within established procedures and policies of the work unit. An Office Specialist III may act as a lead to lower-level clerical classifications, but is primarily an individual contributor with a high level of expertise in generalized office administration. The City of Sunnyvale is seeking an effective and skilled communicator, and highly motivated problem solver for the position of Principal Transportation Engineer/Planner.  This management position reports directly to the Transportation and Traffic Manager in the Public Works Department and will be responsible for:  assisting with planning, organizing and coordinating the activities of the Division of Transportation and Traffic; and perform professional traffic engineering, transportation planning, designing, and project management.

This position will supervise a small team within the Division to accomplish specific tasks and high-level, community-oriented projects. Current projects include: East Channel Trail study; Mary Avenue Overcrossing over highways 101 and 237; Bernardo Avenue railroad undercrossing; Sunnyvale Avenue and Mary Avenue railroad grade separations, liaison with the County for the Lawrence Grade Separation project; and coordinating with VTA as part of the delivering Measure B transportation projects. The position will manage multiple consultant contracts and will be expected to coordinate and work closely with other staff within the Division and with staff within other departments such as Public Works, Community Development, Environmental Services, and Public Safety, and represent the City with outside agencies such as the Valley Transportation Authority, Caltrain, High Speed Rail, Caltrans, MTC, County of Santa Clara, and adjacent cities.

The position will focus on advancing the projects mentioned above, assist with oversight of the design and traffic signal operations, implementation of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS); assist with the coordination of Division of Transportation and Traffic activities with other divisions and departments; oversee and assist with oversight of the grant application preparation, reporting, and management for transportation projects; assist with planning and coordinating division workload and budgets; creating and sustaining cooperative and collaborative working relationships across the City, with the development community, and residents; attend and present at public meetings/City Commissions; and provide assistance with highly complex traffic engineering work. We therefore, are looking for a candidate with strong analytical, technical and problem solving skills, who can prioritize and deliver results in a constantly changing environment, effectively communicate to various types of interested parties, and has the proven ability to establish effective working relationships with customers, co-workers, and vendors.
