The Department:

The Parks & Recreation Department is responsible for managing and maintaining the City's beautiful park system, recreation facilities, pools, and cemeteries and providing programs, services and activities that enhance residents’ lives and contribute to the health and wellness of the community. The Position:
 This recruitment is for two Recreation Coordinator positions. 

Recreation Coordinator, Performing Arts Unit, Community Recreation Center

The Performing Arts Unit offers year-round programming in theater, dance, music, and choir, led by a team of contract instructors and part-time staff. One of our cornerstone offerings is the Youth Theater Program—now in its 55th year—which stages four full-scale productions annually. We’re looking for a passionate, organized, and collaborative recreation professional who shares our love for theater and the performing arts. This role is key to delivering high-quality, inclusive, and engaging programs, classes, and performances. Recreation Coordinator, Active Older Adults, Senior Center

The Senior Center serves a thriving community of over 1,000 members and welcomes hundreds of visitors each day for both drop-in and fee-based programs.  This classified position is responsible for coordinating programs within a specific recreation program (Performing Arts; Youth Development; Sports & Aquatics; Older Adults & Special Populations, Enrichment, or Marketing & Communications).  The position may also be responsible for conducting administrative and promotional duties for community-wide activities or events in a specific recreation program. The incumbent may be required to oversee a specific recreation facility, perform routine program development or oversight, and take specific responsibility for the coordination of as-needed staff and contract employees. Performs related work as required.

Minimum Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Minimum Requirements:

• A Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university with a degree in Recreation, Recreation & Leisure Studies, Tourism, Leisure & Event Planning, Social Science, Kinesiology, or closely related field; and
• Two (2) years of full-time paid experience coordinating a recreation program, including the supervision of recreation leadership personnel.  These two (2) years may be a combination of full-time, part-time, or internship experience (2,000 hours of part-time and/or internship experience are equivalent to one (1) year of full-time work experience).

For Aquatics Program:

• Minimum of two (2) years of experience in various aquatics programs and in aquatic environment emergency response.

Possible Substitution for Education:

• Graduation from high school or possession of a G.E.D. and five (5) years of additional paid full-time experience in the supervision of recreation personnel in a public recreation setting may be substituted for the college graduation requirement.

Desirable Qualifications:

• Experience with program budgeting and program marketing is highly desirable; and
• Experience using recreation registration software program is desirable.

LICENSE(S) AND/OR CERTIFICATION(S)

• Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license is required at the time of appointment and for the duration of employment; and
• CPR and First Aid is required within six (6) months of appointment and for the duration of employment.

For Aquatics Program:

• Title 22 First Aid and CPR certification are required at the time of appointment and for the duration of employment; and
• Lifeguard Training Certificate and Lifeguard Training Instructor Certificate are required at the time of appointment and for the duration of employment.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

• Experience with program budgeting and program marketing is highly desirable;
• Experience using recreation registration software program is desirable; and
• When assigned to the Aquatics Program, Water Safety Instructor Certifications or other recognized Swim Lesson Instruction Certification is desirable. 

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

• May be required to work evening shifts, weekends, and unusual hours to meet program and event requirements; and
• Must be able to perform all of the essential functions of the job.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

The Recreation Coordinator is an advanced journey level classification responsible for coordinating programs for a specified recreation program or recreation facility. Incumbents regularly work on complex tasks that require discretion and independent judgement. Assignments are given with general guidelines and incumbents are responsible for establishing objectives, timelines, and methods to deliver services. The Recreation Coordinator differs from the lateral classification of Recreation Coordinator - Therapeutics in that the lateral classification specializes in therapeutics programs, whereas, the Recreation Coordinator performs general recreation work. The Recreation Coordinator is distinguished from the higher-level classification of Recreation Supervisor in that the later primarily performs supervisory functions over recreation programs, facilities, events, and/or parks and supervises full-time personnel.

THE JOB

Instruct children and young adults (primarily 5-17 years of age) in beginning to intermediate tennis camp. Class content should provide basic and/or more advanced game mechanics, strategies, and the rules of tennis, depending on the student level of the skill. Class must emphasize the importance of good sportsmanship and team play. The goal is to have fun and develop a skill.

Schedule: Camp will run from June 9th through June 19th.

Group A (5-7yrs) 9:00AM to 9:45AM

Group B (8-10yrs) 10AM to 10:45AM

Group C (11yrs+) 11AM to 11:45AM

Location: LOHS Tennis Courts  

ESSENTIAL POSITION FUNCTIONS

• To provide, organization, leading, and instructing individuals and groups in sports programs.
• Provides encouragement to participants and provides a positive atmosphere for play.
• Supervise and implement safe practices as it relates to participants, programs, and facilities. 
• Implement lesson plans to be provided by the City.
• Maintains rosters and City forms.
• Advises participants on game and facility procedures and policies, as appropriate.
• Develop and lead daily tennis specific drill and game components.
• Reports accidents and prepares accident reports as required.
• Communicate effectively with children, other coaches/referees, parents, and community members.
• Sets up equipment and ensures its return in serviceable condition.
• Maintain program areas by cleaning up after activities.

Summary
Under general supervision, performs a variety of complex skilled irrigation, grounds mainten­ance and landscape tasks in accordance with District policies and procedures; works indepen­dently and exercises judgment; ensures daily workload is carried out through individual and cooperative efforts; performs preventive maintenance of District-owned properties; and performs related duties as assigned.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Performs a variety of technical duties to ensure accurate and timely data entry and processing of various financial records; documents financial transactions in general ledger accounts; reconciles bank, accounting and payroll data; analyzes journal
• Develops and implements plans for daily/regularly-scheduled park irrigation maintenance; installs, repairs and maintains irrigation equipment, as necessary.
• Establishes water budgets for each park facility; audits and calculates park/facility water usage, analyzes and interprets data and provides monthly reports.
• Investigates and develops new methods and/or improvements to existing methods that result in effective management and conservation strategies of limited water resources.

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

Certificates and Licenses:  

• Valid California driver’s license with a good driving record and current automobile insurance.
• Certified Water Auditor.

Position subject to pre-employment physical

The City of Foster City is recruiting for a part-time Parks Maintenance Worker in the Parks Department. The is a part-time non-benefited position working approximately 20 hours per week, and no benefits are provided. 

Important and Essential Responsibilities 
Performs mowing, weeding, trimming, pruning, cultivating, fertilizing, pest control, planting and cleaning of lawns, trees, plants, and parks; removes and disposes of trash and litter; maintains park and maintenance equipment, buildings and facilities; maintains irrigation systems; performs construction and demolition of park facilities, drainage, low-voltage electrical and irrigation systems for new, expanded and renovated park facilities as part of capital improvement projects; performs minor plumbing or building repair duties; supervises and coordinates Sheriff’s Work Program personnel; operates small trucks, dump trucks, ride-on and walk-behind mowing equipment.

Education and Training Guidelines: 
Any combination equivalent to experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way would be:

Education: Completion of a job or technical training program in maintenance, construction, or groundskeeping; completion of high school or the equivalent. 

Experience: One year of full time experience in general maintenance, construction, or groundskeeping.

Selection Process

JOB SPECIFICATIONS

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to remain in a stationary position, occasionally move about inside the office to access supplies and office machinery, frequently communicate and exchange information, review handwritten, electronic and facsimile documents, and operate a computer and other office productivity machinery. The position will work out of the Los Angeles River Center and Gardens but may occasionally be required to travel to various other locations. Wages:

Required Hours and Location

This position is seasonal with an assigned 10-hour shift on Fridays and optional 10-hour shifts on Saturday, Sunday, or Monday as needed.  This position will terminate at or before 900 hours and is intended to run concurrently with the Background Investigation and Hiring process for Ranger Trainee, for Seasonal Ranger Assistants who communicate an interest in doing so within the introductory period of the season. Must be available to work at various locations.

Public Contact

As public parklands, the majority of MRCA properties are open to the general public during operating hours. This position will have contact with members of the public in public areas such as parking lots and shared public/office restrooms, and during public meetings.

The Seasonal Wildland Firefighter will protect agency parkland and resources and performs a wide variety of skilled park construction, maintenance, and patrol work; assists the public in natural resources interpretation and information; provides fire protection, suppression, vehicle and equipment maintenance. To protect visitors, park land and infrastructures and to insure a safe and peaceful environment for public usage. 

This position requires a highly motivated, responsible, organized and self-starter individual who can handle an array of tasks, has good judgement in making decisions, and can work independently or as part of a team. The individual must be able to demonstrate common sense when working on tasks, as well show the ability to come up with possible solutions ideas to issues that they may come across, in areas that may be outside their expertise; be willing to take on uncertain challenges; and learn, understand and follow the chain of command.

The work performed will support MRCA’s operation in fire prevention and protection of life, property and resources within greater Los Angeles and beyond. Candidates must have the ability to be out on an extended attack or a campaign fire assignment anywhere within California, up to 14 days minimum per assignment.

This is a full-time seasonal, non-exempt, at-will position.

This position reports to the Squad Boss of their assigned crew. Assorted tasks may be supervised by others in the leadership structure, including other Squad Bosses, Captains, and Chiefs as needed. The position supervises no other staff immediately, however opportunities to supervises others may arise, within the abilities of the individual.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.

• Performs extensive weed abatement to reduce fire hazards and for native revegetation; with use of tractor, chain saw, weed whacker, spraying herbicide or use of hand tools, in/on a variety of landscape types and topographies.
• Provides information to park visitors on park features, natural resources, historical interpretation, safety, and rules.  May lead interpretive hikes.
• Constructs and repairs park facilities such as fencing, restrooms, gates, kiosks.
• Install and maintain park water distribution and suppression systems.
• Directs volunteer crews such as trail crews, community service workers, and the volunteer Mounted Assistance Units. Coordinate with organized public groups utilizing park facilities.
• Assesses any natural or manmade hazards on parkland; warns public, removes or ameliorates hazards if possible.
• Maintains developed park grounds, facilities, trails; operates tractors, trucks, chain saws, other power tools needed for park maintenance.
• Assists crew personnel and others as directed.
• Respond to emergency situations on parkland to protect life, property and resource.
• Patrol and protect park lands, inform the provisions of the Public Resources Code, other codes, ordinances, etc. or writing incident reports as necessary.
• Protects park visitors and structures in wildland fire situations (visitor evacuation), operate pumps, fill tanks, hose layout, line-cutting, water and foam lay-down, etc.
• Assist in emergency search and rescue efforts on parkland, in a wide variety of terrain including steep slopes, canyons, and creeks. Coordinate action with the local authorities as necessary due to the nature of the emergency, i.e., brush fire, flood, etc.
• Coordinate with outside agency crews working on parkland.
• Perform heavy physical labor; including lifting and carrying items weighing up to but not limited to 90 pounds a distance of up to but not limited to 50 feet.
• Operate with substantial independence and coordinate work with others in completing assignments.
• Perform routine maintenance and repairs on agency vehicles and other equipment.
• Ability to be out on an extended attack or a campaign fire assignment anywhere within California up to 14 days minimum.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS

Individuals will be assigned to one of the three (3) crew schedules; Crew 2 (Wed-Sat), Crew 3 (Sun-Wed), or Crew 4 (Sat/Sun/Tu/Wed) shift, working 10 hours per day, 40 hours per week with some scheduling flexibility. Occasional overtime work in evenings, nights,  weekends, and holidays upon prior approval by supervisor. This position will work out of Holiday Camp Fire Station in Calabasas but may be required to travel to various other locations.
