The Position

 
The San Bruno Police Department is recruiting for entry-level Public Safety Dispatchers.  Public Safety Dispatchers are responsible for public safety dispatch and related records management activities. This position operates on a 24-hour, 365 days per year basis, and may be assigned to either a day, swing, or graveyard shift on a regular, rotational basis that includes nights, weekends, and holidays.  Public Safety Dispatchers perform a wide range of duties involving radio, telephone, and computers, applying various procedures and codes. Dispatchers receive and transmit emergency and non-emergency telephone and radio traffic as well as process communication reports, records, and radio logs, while maintaining
a high level of confidentiality.  Dispatchers may also support the Police Department by performing clerical tasks, training, assisting with fingerprinting, and being accountable for financial transactions.  This position is integral in supporting the goals and objectives of the City and Police Department.  

Examples of Duties

Essential Duties

• Receives and transmits emergency
  and non-emergency
  telephone and radio traffic.  

• Maintains and processes a variety of communications reports, records and radio logs.

• Operates a dispatch console, uses Computer Aided Dispatch (C.A.D.) System and other computer programs to process information and records.

• Responsible for various Record Management System (RMS) entries, some of these include but are not limited to citations, warrants, subpoenas. 

• Responsible for accurate and timely entries into the California Law Enforcement Telecommunication System (CLETS), as well as, the National Crime Information Center (NCIC).

• Maintains a high level of confidentiality.

• Performs collateral duties including a variety of related clerical tasks:
  records entry, assisting in fingerprinting and jail operations, which may include searching prisoners; and is accountable for handling cash, bond, and check transactions.

Education

• Possession of a high school diploma or GED equivalent. Additional related college course work or degree preferred.

Experience

• At least one (1) year of related work experience requiring alertness and independent judgment, but no previous public safety dispatch experience is required.

Certificates and Licenses

• Must possess and maintain a valid California Driver’s License, Class C with a good driving record.

• Typing certificate issued within the last year verifying minimum typing speed of thirty-five (35) net words per minute with a maximum of nine (9) errors. Typing certificate must be submitted with application to be considered.  Online typing certificate permitted with application; formal test will be administered to final candidate.

• Completion within the last year of the POST Entry Level Dispatcher Selection Test Battery with a preferred minimum
  score of 48 or above;

The Department of Public Works is accepting applications for the position of Public Works Technician I/II. Under general supervision, Public Works Technicians perform a variety of routine to journey level sub-professional technical, field, and office civil engineering work in a variety of technical areas.

The current vacant Public Works Technician I/II position is in the Road Operations - Permitting Section of the Road Services Division.

The Road Maintenance Division of County of San Mateo's Department of Public Works is responsible for routine and emergency repairs to over 315 miles of road surfaces, culverts, shoulders, drainage facilities, and roadside vegetation on roads within the public right-of-way of San Mateo County's unincorporated districts.

Public Works Technician I is the entry level class of this technical support series. Initially under close supervision, incumbents learn technical support and County procedures. As experience is gained, there is greater independence of action within established guidelines. This class is flexibly staffed with Public Works Technician II and incumbents are expected to advance to the higher level after gaining experience and demonstrating proficiency which meet the qualification of the higher-level class.

Public Works Technician II is the journey level class of this series, fully competent to independently perform a variety of responsible technical support duties. This class is distinguished from the Senior Engineering Aide class which is specialized in scope and technical functions.

The ideal candidate for this position has the following knowledge, skills and abilities:

• Familiarity and experience with permitting, plan review, or other technical clerical work
• Communicate effectively and work professionally with the public and co-workers. 
• Has field experience related to utility construction projects.

The City of Newark is excited to announce an opportunity for an experienced professional to join our Public Works team as a Public Works Inspector! 

Under general supervision, the Public Works Inspector performs skilled and technical inspection work on a variety of public and private construction projects, including streets, utilities, and other public infrastructure. This role ensures conformance with approved plans, specifications, permits, industry standards, accepted construction practices, and all applicable local and state codes and contractual requirements.

The inspector reviews construction documents, oversees all phases of infrastructure installation and contract maintenance work—such as pavement overlays, stormwater systems, and utility installations—and ensures compliance with the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) for traffic control. Responsibilities include conducting field measurements, performing material testing, maintaining detailed daily field records, and using applicable software to compile construction reports. The inspector coordinates with contractors, developers, and agency representatives to resolve construction-related issues and may provide functional supervision of field staff on assigned projects. All work is performed in accordance with City safety policies and procedures.

This class performs a variety of technical inspections related to the construction of public streets, parks, site development improvements, paving, grading, drainage, erosion, and storm water quality controls. Assignments, objectives, and work methods are specified. Incumbents' work will be gradually performed on a more independent basis subject to occasional review through consultation with the supervisor.

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

Education: 

• Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent. College level course work in construction or engineering is desirable. 

Experience: 

• Two (2) years of technical experience in public works inspections, field surveying, grade checking, or related field.  

License: 

• Possession of a valid driver license and a satisfactory driving record throughout employment.

The Department 

The Public Works department is comprised of the Maintenance, Engineering and WQCP (Water Quality Control Plant) divisions. The Maintenance Division is responsible for all of the asphalt and concrete streets within the City as well as all of the associated signalized intersections, streetlights, road signs and traffic markings.  The division also maintains the sanitary sewer/storm system which includes all of the sanitary sewer lines, all of the storm lines and catch basins, several storm water pump stations, as well as various large storm water trash capture devices throughout the City.

THE POSITION

Under close to general supervision, this hourly position is responsible for cleaning and maintaining the downtown corridor, including the removal of litter, debris, and illegal dumping. Duties are primarily driven by SeeClickFix service requests and may include other related maintenance and cleaning tasks as assigned.
 

IDEAL CANDIDATE 

The ideal candidate will have experience with outdoor maintenance work and be familiar with basic tools, equipment, and safety practices related to cleaning and debris removal in public spaces. They will take pride in keeping high-visibility areas clean and welcoming, respond promptly to service requests (such as those submitted through SeeClickFix), and interact professionally with the public and City staff. The ideal candidate will be reliable, self-motivated, and able to work independently or as part of a team, using sound judgment while following established safety procedures.

TYPICAL DUTIES (may include but are not limited to the following):

• Conduct daily cleaning and maintenance of the City’s downtown corridor, ensuring all public areas are free of litter and debris.
• Efficiently empty, clean and service all City owned trash receptacles, adhering to waste disposal and sanitation standards.
• Respond to requests for service in real time via smart device.
• Uses a variety of hand and power tools in connection with the above duties; operates light, motorized equipment, such as pick-ups, flatbeds, and dump trucks.
• Identify and report maintenance issues, safety hazards or vandalism during routine duties to appropriate City personnel.

The Permit Technician will perform a variety of responsible technical and office support work in the Engineering division. Work may include reviewing permit applications relating to building, site development, construction, mapping, encroachment or occupancy; checking plans for completeness and performing basic review for permits; tracking plans and applications through the permitting process; calculating permit fees and issuing over the counter permits; performing a variety of office support activities, which may include telephone and counter reception, provision of factual information to visitors, receipt of payments, word processing, data entry and record keeping, report preparation and filing, and other related work as assigned. This position receives general supervision from the Public Works Director or designee, and exercises no direct supervision over staff.

SPECIAL EMPLOYMENT INFORMATION: This is a part-time position requiring a minimum of 24.5 hours per week, up to 37 hours per week. The schedule will typically be 25 hours per week, Monday through Thursday, with some flexibility with days and hours.
 

Examples of Duties:

• Provide customer service by responding to general public, developer, and agency inquiries by phone and at the counter; provide information regarding building, encroachment and grading permit policies and application procedures; and work cooperatively with property owners, contractors, architects, developers, engineers or their representatives to resolve questions regarding permit issuance and permit fees. 
• May review building, traffic control or engineering plans and specifications for completeness and conformance to application requirements and regulations; ensure that required permits have been obtained; verify contractor licensing; route plans to appropriate departments for review and sign off; track plans and ensure timely returns; prepare and track plan packets for plan check by outside contract services; and compiles plan check comments.
• Calculate, collect and record permit application and plan check fees; coordinate fee collection with staff; issue building, grading, encroachment, and over the counter permits for development projects; and coordinate bond releases with finance staff and contractors.
• Coordinate with outside agencies to ensure all necessary approvals acquired before issuing permits.
• Work closely with Code Enforcement Officer on code compliance issues to ensure community concerns are addressed and building code is adhered to.
• Assist in scheduling daily building or engineering inspections; monitor Division inspection phone line; and coordinate utility releases with building inspectors and utility company.
• Maintain department records, file and other reference materials; compile and disseminate data regarding permit activity and fee collections; prepare and edit correspondence, plan check comments and various technical and statistical reports.
• Establish positive working relationships with building contractors, developers, engineers, representatives of community organizations, state/local agencies, associations, City management and staff, and the general public.
• Perform related duties as assigned.

The City of Menlo Park is seeking a Regulatory Compliance Analyst for the Public Works Department. Under general direction, the Regulatory Compliance Analyst coordinates and oversees the planning, development, and implementation of regulatory programs within the Public Works Department. The role involves organizing, investigating, developing, directing, and managing the activities of regulatory programs to ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local laws related to engineering and related fields. The Regulatory Compliance Analyst will maintain a thorough understanding of the laws and regulations set forth by various federal, state, and local regulatory agencies. Additionally, this specialist will inspect properties, facilities, operations, and construction activities to ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations.

About the Department

The Public Works Department consists of approximately 72 full time employees and is responsible for maintaining and improving the City’s streets, parks, water and stormwater systems, traffic signals, fleet, and public buildings.  Public Works provides many of the basic services affecting the daily lives of everyone living, working, visiting, and commuting within the City, including:  

• 26 City-owned buildings/facilities and their grounds
• A fleet of over 250 vehicles and pieces of equipment
• 97 miles of streets
• Drinking water delivery for 16,000 customers
• Flood protection and stormwater management programs particularly along the San Francisco Bay, San Francisquito Creek and Atherton Channel
• 14 parks, 2 open spaces, 14 playgrounds, 2 dog parks, 9 sports fields, and 14 tennis/pickleball courts
• Efforts to preserve and expand the urban canopy, including 20,000 public trees
• Multimodal transportation services including 42 traffic signals, safe routes to schools and citywide shuttle programs. 

The department has nearly a $40 million operating budget supported by over 25 different special/dedicated funding sources for the varied programs and services provided to the community. In addition, the City has an approximate $100 million capital improvement program, in part due to a successful track record in pursuing grants from a variety of local, state and federal sources. Some of the exciting efforts on the horizon include efforts to protect the San Francisco Bay shoreline and adjacent community from sea level rise; efforts to eliminate the City’s reliance on fossil fuels through building and fleet electrification; making investments in transportation safety through strategic quick-build projects and large infrastructure changes like a pedestrian/bicycle undercrossing at Caltrain; and ensuring the equitable delivery of services throughout the entire city in alignment with the goals and programs developed as part of the city’s first environmental justice element underway.

THE OPPORTUNITY

The City of Pacifica is recruiting for a Public Works Superintendent within the Department of Public Works. Under the direction of the Field Services Manager, the incumbents will be responsible for the field services of the Public Works Department. They will plan, organize, and direct the work of field personnel and perform related work as required. The incumbents will be assigned to oversee various subdivisions such as Streets, Streams, Storm Drains, Street Lighting, and Motor Pool programs.

THE DEPARTMENT

The Public Works Department is responsible for maintaining and repairing the City’s infrastructure and wastewater treatment operations in an efficient and cost-effective manner while providing a high level of customer service and a safe work environment for city employees. The Department maintains parks, playing fields and medians and keeps streets and trails clean and well-maintained. The Department also coordinates the tree program, cleans beaches and coordinates the City Beautification program.

The Public Works Department is organized into three divisions including Wastewater Treatment Operations, Field Services and Engineering. The Wastewater Treatment Operations includes the operation of the Calera Creek water treatment plant and management of the collection system. Field Services oversees the maintenance of city streets, parks, trees, vehicles and public facilities. The Engineering Division manages public infrastructure projects, transportation planning and maintenance and repair of the City’s infrastructure. The Public Works Department is supported by 56 full-time staff and an annual operating budget of $4.6 million, along with a FY2023-2028 CIP appropriation of $ 8.6 million.

PUBLIC WORKS SUPERINTENDENT

DEFINITION

Under direction, manages the field services of the Public Works Department; to plan, organize, and direct the work of field personnel, including Parks, Trees, Streams Streets, Buildings, Rangers and/or Motor Pool Divisions.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISITCS

This is a management class with major responsibilities for the City’s Parks, Trees, Streams Streets, Buildings, Rangers and/or Motor Pool maintenance programs, that requires significant independence, initiative, and discretion within established guidelines. This position assists in the strategic planning, organization, and management across multiple operational units.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Receives direction from the Field Services Manager or designee. Exercises general supervision over supervisory, professional, technical and administrative support staff through subordinate levels of supervision.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS - INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO THE FOLLOWING:

• Plan, organize, direct, review and evaluate the work of staff involved in public works operations, including building maintenance, streams, streets, streets cleaning, storm drain maintenance, signs and signals, parking lots, and trails, janitorial service for City owned facilities, and vehicle maintenance and repair directly and through subordinate levels of supervision.
• Establish and carry out division goals, objectives, work plans, reports, policies and procedures.
• Prepare division budget and staffing requirements;
• Plan, organize and direct the work of contractors;
• Responsible for the procurement of goods and services.
• Monitor operations to ensure that operating procedures are followed.
• Control the requisition of supplies, materials and equipment.

The Department:                                       

The Engineering and Transportation Department is supported by 27 FTEs, 9 contract employees, and a FY 2025-26 Capital Budget of approximately $72.9 million covering infrastructure and transportation projects. The Five-Year CIP (FY 2025-26 to FY 2029-30) totals $372 million, including citywide projects. Major projects include an impressive list of transportation projects, such as the SR84/US101 Freeway Interchange, grade separations along the Caltrain rail line, parking, transportation demand management and Vision Zero implementation, and various traffic calming and roadway projects. Other major projects entail the Transit Center, the Water Master Plan implementation, finalizing and implementing a Recycled Water Master Plan, and various Stormwater System improvements. Future priorities will involve developing an Adaptation Plan to address Sea Level Rise and the Redwood Shores and Bayshore protection projects.
