About the Opportunity
The City of Millbrae is looking for a full-time Deputy Finance Director based in Millbrae, California.
Reporting to the Finance Director, you will play a pivotal role in managing the day-to-day operations of the Finance Department and supporting citywide financial initiatives.
In this position, you will be primarily responsible for overseeing departmental functions, supervising staff, and supporting the Finance Director in budget development, auditing, and financial planning activities.
More specifically, your responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Leading or supporting the annual audit and year-end financial close
- Planning, coordinating, and managing the daily operations of assigned finance functions
- Supervising, training, evaluating, and mentoring departmental staff
- Assisting in budget preparation, cost allocation, and fee schedule development
- Overseeing investment activities and preparing quarterly reports for Council
- Providing complex financial analysis and reports to internal and external stakeholders
- Coordinating financial systems and advising on fiscal policies and procedures
- Representing the department at City Council meetings and during labor negotiations
- Other duties as assigned

More About You
Education: Graduation from a four-year college or university with major coursework in accounting, finance, business administration, public administration, or a closely related field.
Experience: At least 5 years of progressively responsible professional experience in accounting, finance, or a related field, including 3+ years in a supervisory or management capacity.
Licenses: Possession of a valid California Driver's License and a satisfactory driving record. A Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license and a Certified Public Finance Officer (CPFO) certificate are highly desirable.
Speak clearly and understandably; operate standard computer programs and financial systems. Ability to work in a standard office environment, travel to various locations within and outside the City of Millbrae to meet program needs, and work additional hours to meet deadlines. When driving on City business, maintenance of a valid California Driver’s License and a satisfactory driving record is required. Must be able to actively participate in evening meetings and respond to department needs as required.
Additionally, the following skills and background will be highly valued:
- Knowledge of governmental accounting principles and practices (GAAP)
- Understanding of municipal budgeting, auditing, and financial reporting
- Familiarity with Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) and financial information systems
- Skill in supervising, mentoring, and evaluating staff performance
- Ability to analyze and prepare complex fiscal and investment reports
- Competence in coordinating year-end closes and audits
- Strong grasp of public administration and financial policy development
- Proficiency in customer service and interdepartmental communication
- Experience working with self-insurance programs and labor negotiation costing
- Ability to apply federal, state, and local financial regulations effectively
