Position and Duties

Technician position for the Radio Communications Shop. The Radio Communications shop maintains the communication system for the City of San José that is used by multiple departments, such as: Police, Fire, Department of Transportation, Parks Recreation Neighborhood Services (Park Rangers), and Public Works (Animal Care & Services). The City of San José public safety and city services depend upon the use of commercial radio communications equipment. For police officers and firefighters, radio communications are the primary means of communicating with the 9-1-1 dispatch center in performing their duties. These vast stand-alone radio systems with fault-tolerant designs are essential to providing the public with reliable emergency response services 24 hours a day, 365 days a year with demand for system survivability through any catastrophic event.

The key responsibilities of the Communications Technician may include:

• Install, maintain, and repair mobile and portable radios, base and control stations, microwave systems, dispatch consoles, voting receivers and comparators, digital Microwave system and P25 LMR systems.
• Respond to trouble reports, perform preventative maintenance and project assignments.
• Update technical documentation including wiring block assignments, as-built drawings of installed equipment at City radio sites, specialized vehicular installations, and diagrams of the City’s various communications systems.
• Provide recommendations for process improvement changes with the input of technical staff.
• Construct and/or modify communications equipment and perform research on new equipment.

POSITION DESCRIPTION, DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS, AND QUALIFICATIONS:

Under immediate supervision, the Customer Service Technician performs a variety of customer service and billing support duties, including processing payments, maintaining customer accounts, responding to billing inquiries, and coordinating service orders. The position also provides administrative support to an assigned supervisor and performs related work as required.

This is the entry-level class in the Customer Service series. Employees in this class typically have little or no directly related work experience but demonstrate the ability to perform the full scope of duties and meet performance standards. Incumbents work under close supervision while learning job tasks, progressing to general supervision as procedures and processes are learned.

• Two (2) years of responsible experience similar to Customer Service Technician is desirable

• Equivalent to completion of the twelfth (12th) grade supplemented by coursework in business or accounting is desirable

• Valid California Class C Driver’s License may be required. A satisfactory driving record is required.

Position and Duties

Senior Maintenance Workers perform under direction, plans, schedules, assigns, and reviews the work of large crews engaged in semi-skilled and skilled work in the maintenance and repair of parks, landscaping, and public facilities. • Plans, schedules, organizes, and assigns work based on work requests and the results of facility or field inspections, and requisitions materials for work completion. The salary range listed above reflects the full compensation potential for this position. However, initial salary placement will typically be at the lower end of the range and will not exceed 97% of the range maximum. Placement within the range will be based on the candidate’s relevant experience and qualifications. Progression through the range may occur over time, subject to continued service, good performance evaluations, and the City’s administrative policies.

This is a grant funded position that is funded through February 4, 2029. 

Opportunity to work a 9/80 work schedule with every other Friday off.

This position is full-time on-site position that actively supports department operations.  

Future MOU salary increases: 2.5% on 7/1/27.

Desirable Qualifications

• Depending on position assignment, the required experience and certification may be required in a particular specialty such as building inspection, electrical inspection, or plumbing and mechanical inspection.
• MEP plan review experience.  
• Certified Access Specialist (CASp) certification.
• Minimum one (1) year of supervisory experience that includes supervising building inspectors.

Licenses/Certificates
 The following are required at time of appointment and for the duration of employment:

• A valid California Class C driver's license.
• Certification as a Building Inspector, Electrical Inspector, Plumbing Inspector, Mechanical Inspector, or Combination Inspector by the International Code Council (ICC) or International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials (IAPMO), or equivalent.

Other Requirements

• Required to file a Conflict of Interest statement upon assuming office, annually and upon leaving office, in accordance with City Manager's Directive 100.
• May be required to occasionally work evenings and weekends.

The San José - Santa Clara Regional Wastewater Facility (RWF) is one of the largest advanced wastewater treatment facilities in the nation and treats water from homes and businesses in the cities of San José, Santa Clara, Milpitas, Campbell, Cupertino, Los Gatos, Monte Sereno, Saratoga, and unincorporated areas within Santa Clara County. Position Duties

The Environmental Services Department is currently seeking to fill multiple full-time Wastewater Operator I/II/III vacancies at the San José - Santa Clara Regional Wastewater Facility (RWF).

Job Classification Overview - Wastewater Operator I/II/III

Under general supervision, performs a variety of work of routine difficulty involved in operation of the San José/Santa Clara Regional Wastewater Facility. 

Typical duties include but are not limited to:

• Inspects, operates, adjusts and maintains equipment in one or more areas of the wastewater treatment plant sections.
• Operates pumps, valves, motors, blowers, internal combustion engines, vehicles, and other related wastewater treatment process equipment.
• Reads and interprets SCADA (supervisory control and data acquisition) system, gauges, dials and other process instruments; recognizes and diagnoses alarms and other warning indicators and makes necessary process and equipment adjustments to maintain process integrity.
• Maintains records of instrument readings and performs process computations and graphing as required.
• Performs routine laboratory tests used in sewage treatment process; takes samples and performs various simple tests for process control.
• Removes solids, pollutants, and harmful bacteria from wastewater to make it less objectionable and more stable.
• Reviews and provides improvements to wastewater facility SOP and processes.
• Accurately completes work orders for use in the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
• Other duties as assigned.

Assignments may be made to any shift in an around-the-clock operation, and incumbents must also be available for work on Saturday, Sunday, and holidays.

Position Duties

The Fleet Management Division in Public Works Department is responsible for the management of the City’s fleet including comprehensive inspection, maintenance, repair, acquisition, and disposal. The City’s vehicle and equipment fleet currently consists of over 2,700 assets.

The Department of Public Works Fleet Management Division is recruiting to fill one (1) Equipment Mechanic Assistant I/II (EMA I/II) position. The EMA I/II is responsible for performing inspections, communicating with other staff and customers, servicing, installation of electronic electrical equipment, ordering parts, entering data in the fleet management system, road testing and diagnosing problems to make various repairs and adjustments on automotive, heavy truck and/or heavy equipment. While working under general supervision, the EMA I/II will be expected to perform safely and follow all rules required by the City of San Jose. These positions, depending on facility assignments, will require working various shift hours and overtime.
