$5,215.33 – $7,338.42 Monthly, Plus Excellent Benefits
Salary steps—Steps F, G, and H, within the range listed above—are available after 5, 10, and 15 years of service, with one year at the prior step and a satisfactory performance evaluation. Initial placement is typically at the entry step, though candidates with relevant public agency accounting or finance experience may qualify for a higher step based on qualifications and job alignment.
 

Opportunity to work a 9/80 work schedule with every other Friday off. This is a full-time, on-site position, designed for direct collaboration with the team and active participation in daily operations.

ABOUT THE POSITION

The City of Gilroy is recruiting for a full-time Accounting Assistant I in the Finance Department. This position will primarily be assigned to the Utility Billing/Information Desk area, providing excellent customer service to internal and external customers, and performing cashiering and accounting-related work. The Finance Department’s goal is to provide timely and accurate financial information to City Management, City Council, and the public, while responsibly managing the City’s assets, including cash and investments.

Under the direct supervision of the Finance Manager or Supervising Accounting Technician, the Accounting Assistant will perform a wide variety of accounting and statistical record-keeping assignments related to maintaining financial and statistical records. This position may provide support in one or more of the following areas: accounts receivable, accounts payable, utility billing, and/or the front information desk.

This role offers opportunities to build foundational experience in municipal finance and may serve as a steppingstone to the Accounting Assistant II classification, depending on performance and experience gained.

As an entry-level Accounting Assistant, you'll be supported with the tools and training needed to succeed and contribute to the department’s goals.   You’ll work closely with the Finance team, other departments, and members of the public, developing strong customer service skills along the way. This role offers valuable exposure to municipal operations and the potential to advance to an Accounting Assistant II position.

• Learn the new Utility Billing/ ERP System – Tyler Munis 
• Support implementation and rollout of new Utility Customer water usage reports and portal. 
• Assist customers with billing inquiries and account support

WORK SCHEDULE 

The Internship is for 11 weeks and can start as early as May 26, 2026, and end as late as September 30, 2026. This paid internship is offered at 32 hours per week. The official start and end date of the internship will be determined at the time of hire. Work hours are generally Monday – Thursday between 8:00am – 5:00pm. 

WHAT YOU’LL DO: 

• Assist Planning with Greenhouse Gas Reduction/Climate Action Plan, including research and community outreach
• Capture project photos for department’s year-end video 
• Create a housing portfolio of Below Market Rate (BMR) properties for office use 
• Support the Building Division by developing permit examples for website 
• Assist Fire Prevention with entering firework code cases and processing booth permits
• Research and collect data for Public Records Act (PRA) requests 

POTENTIAL PROJECTS: 

• Grant Funding Research for Housing and Community Services Division
• Greenhouse Gas Reduction/Climate Action Plan for Planning Division 
• Website Improvements for all divisions

The Coordinator is responsible for providing the highest quality of guest service to all visitors. The Coordinator will be responsible for administrative duties and assist at various City facilities, as assigned. In addition, the Coordinator will monitor facility rentals and support the special events. This is potentially a year around part time position.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES (This is a general description of duties and is not all-inclusive)

• Provide excellent customer service while performing assigned duties and have strong telephone and follow up skills
• Maintain a high degree of confidentiality in performing all aspects of assigned duties
• Process financial transactions and maintain accurate accounting records
• Communicate facility/program features to potential clients/groups
• Complete all daily opening and closing tasks in a timely manner
• Assist in protecting and safeguarding all property assets
• Resolve guest/participant concerns as needed
• Attend training and staff meetings as assigned

• Supervise part-time employees in Supervisor's absence and update employees on schedules and other essential tasks

• Perform other duties as assigned

SUPERVISION EXERCISED AND RECEIVED

General supervision is provided by Recreation Supervisor or Assistant Recreation Supervisor

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Must be a minimum of eighteen (18) years of age
• Must have high school diploma or GED equivalent and have one year college or volunteer / paid experience that would qualify the applicant to perform all duties
• Must have reliable transportation to and from job assignments
• Must possess strong organizational skills and be able to multi-task
• Must be able to establish and maintain productive relations with others
• Must be willing and able to work days, nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime as required
• Depending upon assignment, may need to possess Class C Driver's License

REQUIREMENTS FOR EMPLOYMENT

• Must be able to handle sensitive and/or stressful situations or information with tact, discretion and significant awareness of confidentiality
• Must effectively communicate with adults and children from a variety of cultural backgrounds
• Willingness to comply with suspected child abuse reporting (11166.5 PC)
• Employees are required to be certified in Adult/Child CPR, First Aid, & AED from American Red Cross, American Heart Association or supervisor approved equivalent. Employees must be certified within 30 days of hire date or prior to the first day of work, whichever occurs earlier.
• Fingerprinting and TB test are required
• Must submit verification of legal right to work in the United States as a condition of employment

SELECTION PROCESS

Qualified application will be evaluated on the basis of related experience and quality of presentation.

The most highly qualified applicants will be invited to an oral interview. Applicant evaluations may include a written and physical test. Satisfactory candidates will be placed on an eligibility list. Placements are anticipated immediately after the list is established. Some placements may be assigned to emphasize public education as the City's needs require.

Some positions may require a health evaluation.
