The Department

The Parks, Beaches and Recreation Department within the City of Pacifica works closely with the community providing programming to youth, seniors and all citizens.  We strive to foster a collaborative and collegial atmosphere among staff while providing high quality programs, activities and events to the community and neighborhoods. DEFINITION

Under immediate and general supervision, classes in this three level series provide a wide variety of responsible and complex administrative, secretarial and clerical duties for an assigned department and department head, to coordinate and participate in office functions in support of the department's goals and objectives; to provide information and assistance to employees and the public regarding departmental policies and procedures.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

The emphasis of the Administrative Assistant series is on the accomplishment of general clerical and administrative support duties.

Administrative Assistant I

This is the entry level in the series. Employees perform routine duties under immediate supervision.

Administrative Assistant II

The is the journey level in the series. Employees perform both routine and more complex duties under general supervision.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Immediate supervision is provided to the Administrative Assistant I. General supervision provided to the Administrative II and III is provided by the department head of designee. The Administrative Assistant III may lead or supervise assigned staff.

ABOUT THE POSITION

Under the direction of the Custodial Services Supervisor, the Maintenance Custodian serves as the worker in the duties of care and cleaning of assigned buildings and related facilities.  The incumbent will be required to travel between several City buildings during their scheduled shift. Custodial services are provided seven days a week with shifts starting at 5pm and ending at 1:30am. Please note that schedules for this role could vary Monday-Sunday and will be determined prior to appointment.

Typical duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

• Sweep, vacuum, shampoo, and mop
• Dust fixtures and equipment up to twelve feet from floor.
• Wash windows and doors up to twelve feet from floor.
• Clean desk and countertops if cleared of items.
• Empty and clean waste receptacles, place in appropriate outside bins. Move recycle bins in and out of assigned buildings as assigned.
• Clean and maintain restrooms in assigned buildings and facilities.
• Replace light bulbs up to twelve feet from floor.
• Lock and unlock doors; turn light and machines on and off; set alarms.
• Pick up papers and other debris and place in appropriate container.
• Operate light duty equipment and machinery.
• Maintain effective communication utilizing email and phone during each assigned shift.

The Superior Court of California, County of San Mateo, is seeking qualified and experienced candidates for the position of Court Staff Attorney I/II - Superior Court of California. The incumbent will perform a wide variety of legal research duties, primarily for the Civil Law and Motion Calendars.

Court Staff Attorney I ($101,192.00 - $126,152.00 Annually) is the entry-level attorney position for the court.

Court Staff Attorney II ($122,220.80 - $152,318.40 Annually) is the experienced-level attorney position for the court.

The ideal candidate will be a member of the California State Bar (required) and will possess extensive working knowledge of California civil law and procedure, as well the functions of a California Superior Court. In addition, the ideal candidate will possess:

• Provide independent legal research to the judges and commissioners of the County of San Mateo Superior Court bench.
• Research matters and provide written memoranda for those motions set on the Civil Direct Calendar Judges’ Law and Motion calendars.
• Review and make recommendations on any civil ex parte motions presented to the court on the daily ex parte calendar(s).
• Research, prepare memoranda, draft orders, and meet with the designated judge on specially set matters.

Other Requirements: Membership in the California State Bar Association, County of San Mateo Bar Association, and specialty section memberships as determined by the Court Executive Officer.

About the Department 

The Library and Community Services department is responsible for providing excellent customer service through recreational, educational, and cultural programs for children, adults and seniors. Our facilities include 221 acres of parkland distributed among 13 parks, two libraries, two community centers, two public pools, three childcare centers, two gymnasiums, and one gymnastics center. Included in the parks and recreation areas are tennis and pickleball courts, dog parks, softball diamonds, picnic areas, playgrounds, soccer fields, a skate park, shared use of a performing arts center and open space.  The City of Menlo Park opened a state-of-the-art new facility that incorporates a community center, gymnasium, aquatics center, senior center, youth center, and branch library in May 2024.

The San Mateo County Attorney's Office is seeking candidates for the 2026 Michael P. Murphy Public Law Fellowship.

In 2014, the County of San Mateo established a Fellowship position in honor of former San Mateo County Counsel Michael P. Murphy. Mr. Murphy served in the County Counsel’s office from 1982 to 2011, the last four years as County Counsel. Vacancies in Bay Area county counsel offices typically attract many qualified applicants and new attorneys are generally not considered for these positions. This Fellowship provides an opportunity for new attorneys to receive training and experience in advising and litigating on behalf of government agencies as they begin their legal careers.

Attorneys in the San Mateo County Attorney’s Office (previously known as the County Counsel’s Office) are generalists. We provide legal advice to County departments, school districts, and special districts; litigate civil cases in State and Federal courts and before administrative agencies; and manage calendar assignments in Dependency, Probate, Lanterman Petris Short Act, and other specialized areas of law. Fellows are given the opportunity to experience a wide range of public sector work, in litigation, public policy, and advice roles. The goal is to provide each Fellow a year in the life of a Deputy County Attorney.

The one-year Fellowship position is focused on providing opportunities to recent law school graduates and judicial clerks. This Fellowship will begin in the Fall of 2026. Law School graduates who will be sitting for the 2026 July Bar Exam are encouraged to apply.

The Organization

The City of Pacifica is a general law city and operates under the Council/Manager Form of Government. Legislative authority is vested in a five member City Council elected at large, one of which is appointed Mayor by the Council. Key City Council commissions and committees include: the Planning Commission, Parks Beaches and Recreation Commission, Open Space and Parkland Advisory Committee, Library Advisory Committee, Beautification Advisory Committee, Economic Development Committee, and the Emergency Preparedness & Safety Commission.

The Department

The Public Works Department is responsible for maintaining and repairing the City’s infrastructure and wastewater treatment operations in an efficient and cost-effective manner while providing a high level of customer service and a safe work environment for city employees. The Department maintains parks, playing fields and medians and keeps streets and trails clean and well-maintained. The Department also coordinates the tree program, cleans beaches and coordinates the City Beautification program. 

The Public Works Department is organized into three divisions including Wastewater Treatment Operations, Field Services and Engineering. The Wastewater Treatment Operations includes the operation of the wastewater treatment and water recycling treatment plant and management of the collection system. Field Services oversees the maintenance of city streets, parks, trees, vehicles and public facilities. The Engineering Division manages public infrastructure projects, transportation planning and maintenance and repair of the City’s infrastructure. The Public Works Department is supported by 56 full-time staff with 29 in the Wastewater Division. The Wastewater Division has an annual operating budget of $14 million along with a FY2022-23 CIP appropriation of $ 10.1 million.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience:

• College level course work in chemistry, engineering or related field. Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four-year college or university with major course work in Civil Engineering, Chemistry, or related field is desirable.
• Five years of progressively responsible administrative and supervisory related experience in Wastewater Treatment at a public agency. Extensive experience in operations and maintenance of pump/lift stations highly desirable.

Licenses Required:

Must possess a valid California Class C driver’s license and have a satisfactory driving record. Possession of a current Grade IV Wastewater Collections System Maintenance Certificate as issued by the California Water Environment Association is required.

This is a journey-level class in the Police Records Specialist classification series responsible for maintaining information in specialized departmental databases, preparing and assembling reports, processing payments, and preparing and processing subpoenas, requests for information, and other documents. All activities are performed within specified legal guidelines. Incumbents are expected to work independently and exercise judgment and initiative. Positions at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit.

DEFINITION

Under general supervision, inspects a variety of construction projects to ensure conformance with contract plans, specifications, standards, laws, and regulations; performs work related to plan checking, issuing permits, providing construction recommendations, and other technical functions; and performs related work as assigned.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Provides field inspection of public and private improvement projects that involve grading, underground utilities, encroachments, curbs, gutters, sidewalk, paving, facilities, structures, and park construction; ensures conformance to approved plans, specifications, and schedules; stipulates correction of defective work; recommends approval of acceptable work;
• Performs technical functions, such as plan checking, issuing permits, and answering construction questions, preparing checklists, guidelines and specifications;

JOB-RELATED QUALIFICATIONS

Ability to: Evaluate quality of construction; detect and locate faulty materials and workmanship and determine the stage of construction; read and interpret codes, standards, details, plans, and specifications; make oral and written presentations for meetings with consultants, contractors, property owners, staff, and project teams; communicate effectively and tactfully, both orally and in writing; provide excellent customer service to the public, other agencies, and other City employees; evaluate CCTV footage for sewer lateral assessments; estimate and calculate amounts and costs of materials used in construction.

EDUCATION AND TRAINING GUIDELINES

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities. A typical way would be:

Education: High school diploma or equivalent (GED).  Technical training and/or a degree in building inspection technology, civil engineering, or a related field is desirable.

Experience: Two (2) years of progressively responsible experience as a Building Inspector with a Municipal Building Department performing combination inspections.

Licenses: Must possess and maintain a valid Class C California Driver’s License issued by the State Department of Motor Vehicles and a satisfactory driving record. Certifications such as Combination Inspector or related are preferred.  

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Physical agility adequate to inspect construction sites. Requires physical flexibility and dexterity, including the ability to continually stand, bend, stoop, reach, and crouch.  Must be able to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, hear voices, and operate telephones.  Must have ability to quickly and accurately see, review, and interpret plans and diagrams and make inspections.
