Summary:
Under general supervision, performs a variety of custodial tasks and provides oversight of rental groups, in accordance with District policies and procedures.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Assist patrons and prospective participants on the phone and in-person
• Assist permit groups with set-up and breakdown of tables, chairs, and other equipment
• Promptly open and unlock facilities or close and secure facilities as scheduled
• Complete facility condition forms following permit group use and incident reports as needed
• Notify management concerning need for major repairs or additions
• Turn athletic field lights off and on for sports groups
• Sell and scan admission tickets special events and/or theater performances

Other Duties and Responsibilities:

• Sweep floors, vacuum carpets, and dust or polish furniture, fixtures, and equipment
• Wash windows, clean restrooms, replenish supplies, and sanitize high touch areas often
• Empty waste receptacles and remove any trash or debris found throughout facility
• May assist with conducting recreation classes
• Perform other related duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

Education and Experience:
Minimum age of 18 years old with a High School Diploma (or GED). At least 250 hours of experience in customer service or a related field preferred.

Summary:

Join San Bruno Community Services, Parks Department as a Lead Maintenance Worker! 

The Community Services Department is committed to providing quality programs, services, and spaces to benefit the health and well-being of the community. Within Community Services, the Parks Maintenance Division is responsible for the maintenance of all City’s outdoor recreation sites, including 20 parks covering 68 acres, 6 baseball fields, 128 acres of open space, all City owned facilities, over 7 miles of medians, and one dog park. 
 

Under the supervision of the Parks Field Supervisor, the Parks Lead Maintenance Worker performs a variety of skilled tasks and complex assignments in maintenance, repair, and construction work. The Lead Maintenance Worker is a working supervisor position. The position exercises direct supervision over crews engaged in service, maintenance, and repair. Work assignments may also involve considerable skill in various construction and mechanical crafts and the operation of heavy construction and maintenance equipment. 

CORE DUTIES

Examples of duties may include, but are not limited to:

• Assigns and reviews work of Maintenance Workers I/II and seasonal staff; trains, supervises, and reviews work of assigned staff; provides input into performance evaluations and performance issues.

• Inspects and repairs equipment at frequent intervals to ensure that all aspects of the systems are safe and functioning properly; maintains a variety of records relating to inspections, maintenance activity, materials supply, athletic field layouts and surfaces, base positioning and installation, and layouts of field markings.

• Determines and marks the locations of irrigation system wiring and water lines from the appropriate sources prior to excavation.

• Responds to complaints and resolves problems regarding functional areas such as tree conditions, ball field conditions irrigation system problems, park, building and ball field lighting, water leaks, parks facility issues.

• Ensures the proper maintenance of equipment and tools assigned to their area of responsibility by checking equipment and tools and maintaining maintenance records, and refers defects to supervisory staff.

• Safely operates vehicles/equipment of various sizes and weights in the loading, hauling and unloading of various equipment, soil and sand, concrete, performance of tree work; and other job functions; operates pneumatic tools and power tools.

• Oversees and participates in construction and maintenance projects as part of a crew, including laying pipe, trenching and backfilling, determines safety and playability of sports fields and reports information to their supervisor, prunes trees and shrubs in conformance with established professional practices and safe working methods.

• Applies pesticides and utilizes best Integrated Pest Management practices for assigned areas of responsibility.

• Performs set up of traffic safety work zones utilizing traffic safety control devices as needed for work performed in areas such as medians, right-of ways, streets, and parks.

• Performs other duties as assigned. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Any combination of education, experience, and training that would provide the best qualified candidates. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be a high school diploma or GED, and two (2) years of increasingly responsible experience performing field maintenance work similar to that of a Maintenance Worker II with the City of San Bruno. 

HIGHLY DESIRABLE

• Possession of a valid California Class B driver’s license. 

• Possession of a Qualified Pesticide Applicators Certificate.

The Ranger is a sworn peace officer who provides visitor services and resource protection on MRCA owned and/or managed parkland.

This position performs a wide variety of duties including park maintenance, law enforcement, first aid, wildland firefighting, and public safety patrol. The Ranger assists the public in natural resource interpretation and performs other duties as needed.  

This is a professional position that requires a highly motivated, responsible, and organized individual. Candidate must be a self-starter who can handle an array of tasks, has good judgement, and can work independently or as part of a team.

This is a full-time, non-exempt, at-will position.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS

The starting hourly rate for Ranger Trainee is $22.58 – $27.45 per hour.  At the completion of all training requirements and upon appointment as a Ranger by the Executive Officer, the wage increases to a range of $33.47 - $40.69 per hour.

Existing MRCA employees may be compensated at a higher rate if they can demonstrate, to the satisfaction of the Chief Deputy Executive Officer, that appropriate additional duties will be performed in addition to the position’s essential duties. This provision does not apply to applicants who are not currently employed by MRCA and may be exercised only at MRCA’s discretion and as budget allows.

The Department:

The Parks and Recreation Department provides planning, development, operation, maintenance, and rehabilitation of the City's neighborhood parks, open space, water sites, recreation buildings, and trails.

The Position:

Under supervision, to perform a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled tasks in connection with the development and maintenance of City parks and recreational facilities.

As an As-needed Laborer, the successful incumbent will work in the department, performing routine maintenance on various parks and facilities including the city-owned cemetery. This position will assist in maintenance and repair using a variety of tools and specialized equipment. 

The Laborer position performs varied, unskilled and skilled manual tasks related to landscape maintenance and sanitization. Typical tasks include cleaning and sanitizing restrooms and buildings, loading trash and leaves in truck, litter abatement, mowing, edging, cleaning park sites, graffiti abatement, and operating a variety of hand/power tools and heavy equipment as needed. This position may require working weekends, holidays, and after hours. Must be able to read, speak, and write English at a basic level, follow written and oral instruction, and perform heavy lifting.  

As an as-needed employee, this is an "at-will" position and there is no guarantee of hours. Hours are limited to 999 in a fiscal year or 960 hours in a fiscal year for retired CalPERS annuitants.

The Position:
Providing customer service at Recreation Facility Front Desk (CRC, YAC, Senior Center, Reed & Grant Sports Park, Warburton and ISC Pools). The job responsibilities include data input, processing program registrations, opening and closing the desk reception area and keeping accurate records of daily sales. Daily check in of patrons, adhering to established protocols and ensuring the safety of customers as they enter and exit the facilities. The Recreation Leader II will supervise children, youth, teens, and other program participants in many facilities, including but not limited to the Reed & Grant Sports Park, Youth Soccer Park, Youth Activity Center & Teen Center, and Community Recreation Center. In this role, the successful incumbents will help conduct health and safety checks, open/closing facilities, serve as Disaster Service Worker while adhering to COVID-19 protocols.  Recreation Leader IIThe Recreation Leader II is an intermediate-level classification in the Recreation Leader series.  This classification is designed for high school graduates whose skill level in several broad types of recreational activities and is sufficient to assume responsibility for an entire recreation program or area. Under general supervision, an incumbent is responsible for the promotion, organization, and leadership of a variety of recreation activities. This class is distinguished from the Recreation Leader III in that the latter holds responsibility for planning and developing recreation activities. 
 Recreation Leader IIIThe Recreation Leader III is an advanced-level classification in the Recreation Leader series designed for college students who are skilled in several broad types of recreational activities.  Under general supervision,  an incumbent in this classification is responsible for the planning, organization, development, and leadership of a specific recreation activity or group of several closely related activities in specialty areas such as athletics/sports, aquatics, drama, arts and crafts, music, dance, therapeutics, nature, and camping . The Recreation Leader III may oversee the work of lower-level personnel and may lead and/or conduct clinics, programs, seminars, and similar gatherings in the specialty area.   The Recreation Leader III is distinguished from the Recreation Specialist in that the latter  exercises a higher degree of independence and holds greater overall program responsibility.

Recreation Leader III

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
 Minimum Requirements:

• Completion of forty-five (45) semester units of coursework, or equivalent, from an accredited college or university, preferably with an emphasis in Recreation, Physical Education or a related field; or
• Six hundred (600) hours of recreation leadership experience equivalent to the level of Recreation Leader II with the City of Santa Clara; and
• Must be at least 18 years of age at time of application

LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATES
 Possession of the following is desirable:

• A valid California Class C driver's license
• A valid American Red Cross First Aid certificate 

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

• As a condition of employment, incumbents will be required to be fingerprinted in accordance with State of California law
• Must be able to perform all of the essential functions of the job assignment

 

Meeting the minimum qualifications does not guarantee admittance into the examination process.  Only the most qualified candidates who demonstrate the best combination of qualifications in relation to the requirements and duties of the position will be invited to test.   Candidates must attain a passing score on each phase of the examination process to qualify for the Eligible List. A department interview will be required prior to appointment.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Recreation Leader I 
Knowledge of:

• Techniques, rules, and equipment used in a variety of recreational activities and games• Recreation hazards and safety precautions
Ability to:• Lead and conduct several broad types of recreation activities• Learn and apply activity rules and regulations•  Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work, including children• Provide and follow oral and written instructions• Physically lead and coordinate assigned recreation activities• Work in a team-based environment and achieve common goals• Exercise tact and maintain poise in resolving disputes and differences arising with the public and employees• Communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing 

Recreation Leader II

Knowledge of:• Techniques, rules, and equipment used in a variety of recreational activities and games• Recreation hazards and safety precautions
Ability to:• Lead and conduct several broad types of recreation activities• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work, including children• Provide and follow oral and written instructions• Physically lead and coordinate assigned recreation activities• Work in a team-based environment and achieve common goals• Exercise tact and maintain poise in resolving disputes and differences arising with the public and employees• Communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing 

Recreation Leader III

Knowledge of:• Techniques, rules, and equipment used in a variety of recreational activities and games• Recreation hazards and safety precautions
Considerable ability to:• Demonstrate proficiency in a specialty recreation activity• Promote, organize, lead and conduct a specialty recreation activity for participants of all skill levels• Instruct and coach participants in a specialty activity• Physically lead and coordinate assigned recreation activities• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work, including children• Work in a team-based environment and achieve common goals• Exercise tact and maintain poise in resolving disputes and differences arising with the public and employees• Communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing
Physical ability to:• Assist participants in and out of wheelchairs• Restrain and/or lift program participants
