AVAILABLE DEPARTMENTS

Police Department
Get an inside look at law enforcement from the ground up! Based in the Investigations Bureau, interns will explore all facets of the Department including patrol, dispatch, records, and code enforcement while gaining hands-on experience through ride- alongs, data analysis, and direct engagement with Department personnel and the community.

Constituent Services/City Clerk
Gain hands-on experience converting physical government records into digital files and learning how local government keeps its official documentation accurate and accessible.

Community Development – Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, 9am – noon. 
You'll observe permit counter operations, conduct research on zoning and sign ordinance amendments, support a residential design review project, and tour key areas of the city including commercial districts, residential neighborhoods, and the Harbor Industrial Area.

Public Works
Help the Public Works Department modernize its records by digitizing paper and legacy documents using Questys, while gaining hands-on GIS experience creating shape layers linked to digital records and supporting staff accessibility, public records requests, and the preservation of institutional knowledge.

Information Technology
Gain broad exposure to how technology powers local government by assisting with end-user support, IT ticketing, desktop and laptop setup, inventory management, e-waste procedures, and contributing to the launch of the new city website

• Detective / School Resource Officer – 2.5% of base salary

• Motorcycle Officer – 2.5% of base salary

• Field Training Officer – 2% of base salary

• Bilingual Pay – Up to $150/month

• K-9 Handler – Receive 7 hours of overtime per pay period

• IT Super User – 5% of base salary

The Position

Reporting directly to the City Manager, the Administrative Services Director provides strategic leadership and operational oversight of the City’s Human Resources and Information Technology Divisions.

San Mateo Consolidated Fire Department

The San Mateo Consolidated Fire Department commenced operations on January 13, 2019. The Fire Department is proud to serve the Cities of Belmont, Foster City and San Mateo as a Joint Powers Authority. The Department collectively has ten engines and two trucks operating out of nine fire stations.  There are 164 full-time employees assigned to one of the following divisions:  Administration, Community Risk Reduction, Training, Emergency Preparedness, Fire Operations and EMS.  The Department serves nearly 164,000 residents daily with a day-time population around 230,000.   Additionally, the department participates in a mutual aid program throughout the county, helping to serve a million people daily. Building Attendant I/II

Part-Time Position - No Benefits

The Belmont Parks and Recreation Department is recruiting for part-time Building Attendants. Building Attendants provide operational supervision of facilities during the absence of full-time staff.

Building Attendant I - This is the entry level class in the Building Attendant series.  Incumbents in this class work under close supervision.  As experience is gained, incumbents may be granted more independence of action under established guidelines.

Building Attendant II - This is the journey level class in the Building Attendant series. Incumbents are expected to work independently in the absence of close supervision.

The Opportunity:

To perform technical inspection and investigative work in enforcing compliance with laws, ordinances and regulations pertaining to the prevention and control of fires; and do related work as required. The Fire Prevention Inspector I/II position is flexibly staffed based on experience.

This is the entry level class in the Fire Prevention Inspection series. This class is distinguished from the Fire Prevention Inspector II by the performance of the more routine tasks and duties assigned to positions within the series including weed abatement and smoke detector inspections, which do not require prior specialized experience. Generally, work is observed and reviewed both during performance and upon completion, and changes in procedures and exceptions to rules are explained in detail as they arise. Since this class is typically used as a training class, employees may have only limited or no directly related work experience.

What You’ll Do:

• Interpret and enforce provisions of fire prevention and fire safety laws, ordinances, and other regulations.
• Perform periodic inspections of new and existing buildings, structures and installations requiring fire clearances; identify fire hazards; recommend corrective actions; perform follow-up inspections to see that corrective actions have been taken.
• Investigate complaints pertaining to violation of fire prevention laws; issue correction orders as necessary.
• Investigate fires; secure fire scenes; identify types of fires; investigate causes of fire; collect, prepare, and present evidence; interview witnesses and suspects; write fire investigations; testify in court when required.
• Provide information to the public concerning the fire prevention practices and procedures; develop and conduct training programs and group presentations relative to fire prevention and fire investigation.
• Instruct fire suppression crews about code interpretation and inspection techniques regarding fire prevention.
• Draw and prepare diagrams of buildings for pre-fire planning and fire inspections.
• Check building plans for code compliance, consult with architects and developers regarding problems and solutions.
• Perform tests on water flow, sprinkler and fire alarms and elevator return systems; certify smoke detectors.
• Prepare records and reports.
• Provide information to the public in forums and meetings.
• Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

Qualifications

Education: 
Master of Library Science or recognized equivalent degree, from an American Library Association-accredited college or university, is required. We also encourage recent graduates, or those expecting to graduate no later than June 2026, to apply.

Experience: 
Any combination of experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to qualify for a Librarian II is two years of librarian experience.
 

Knowledge of:

• Library procedures.

• Principles of a modern library.

• Principles of intellectual freedom.

 Skill/Ability to:

• Develop library programs/projects.

• Establish and maintain cooperative relations with staff, the public, and community groups.

• Communicate effectively, orally and in writing.

• Instruct others in the use of library materials.
