The Opportunity:

To perform technical inspection and investigative work in enforcing compliance with laws, ordinances and regulations pertaining to the prevention and control of fires; and do related work as required. The Fire Prevention Inspector I/II position is flexibly staffed based on experience.

This is the entry level class in the Fire Prevention Inspection series. This class is distinguished from the Fire Prevention Inspector II by the performance of the more routine tasks and duties assigned to positions within the series including weed abatement and smoke detector inspections, which do not require prior specialized experience. Generally, work is observed and reviewed both during performance and upon completion, and changes in procedures and exceptions to rules are explained in detail as they arise. Since this class is typically used as a training class, employees may have only limited or no directly related work experience.

What You’ll Do:

• Interpret and enforce provisions of fire prevention and fire safety laws, ordinances, and other regulations.
• Perform periodic inspections of new and existing buildings, structures and installations requiring fire clearances; identify fire hazards; recommend corrective actions; perform follow-up inspections to see that corrective actions have been taken.
• Investigate complaints pertaining to violation of fire prevention laws; issue correction orders as necessary.

DEFINITION

Under general supervision of the Code Enforcement Officer, the Code Enforcement Inspector facilitates compliance with City Municipal codes, ordinances, California Codes, conditions of approval and resolutions relating to public nuisances, planning, zoning, construction, business licensing, animal control and other associated disciplines. Works collaboratively with other City Divisions and Agencies and actively participates as a member of the Code Enforcement Task Force. Tracks, updates and maintains investigations, complaint information and official records. Attends training to maintain or achieve Code Enforcement Officer Certification. Performs related work as required.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES

Investigate reported or suspected violations of City or California codes, and implement enforcement activities to gain compliance. Issue written notices and warnings, and criminal citations. Educate the public regarding code requirements. Conduct field inspections, gather-supporting evidence, maintain case files (both computer and hard files) and, as necessary, prepare investigation reports regarding violations. May assist in preparing and presenting information to the Planning Commission, City Council, Administrative Hearing Board and courts of law. Participate in and often coordinate joint code enforcement activities with other agencies. Speak before neighborhood and civic groups about the Code Enforcement Program and work closely with such groups to solve neighborhood problems.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of: Basic code enforcement and investigation techniques; common California Codes relating to property maintenance, municipal codes, ordinances and resolutions related to public nuisances, planning and zoning. Effective and efficient techniques of public education, field inspections for code compliance, gathering and analyzing evidence and data, and preparing and presenting reports.

Ability to: Read, understand, interpret and apply laws, regulations, ordinances, resolutions, policies and other documents associated with enforcement duties. Maintain a positive attitude and work as a highly effective team member of the Code Enforcement Program, Economic and Community Development Department and the Code Enforcement Task Force. Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing. Prepare and make verbal presentations to small and large groups, the Administrative Hearing Board and other official bodies. Prepare factually clear, concise and complete written reports and correspondence. Exercise good customer service skills with the public, outside agencies and staff. Interact tactfully to gain voluntary compliance with City codes. Identify code violations and exercise proper judgment in determining the degree of compliance with various laws and determine appropriate course of action. Assist City staff with interpretation and application of the codes used. Coordinate enforcement and inspection functions with other City departments. Competently use a desktop computer with a main program base such as Office 2010, to record, organize, and monitor all code enforcement activities. Follow established work procedures and practices, including adherence to sound safety practices. Drive a vehicle. Work under stressful and uncomfortable, cold, foggy and rainy climatic conditions. Perform inspections on substandard or unsafe properties, which may require climbing, crawling, kneeling, and bending. Interview witnesses and violators in a highly effective and professional manner. Interact positively and cooperate with co-workers, respond politely to customers, work as a team member, function under demanding time pressure, respond in a positive manner to supervision, and attend work and perform duties on a regular and consistent basis.

Education: Possession of an AA degree in a related field. Additional education and training in writing, public speaking and areas related to code enforcement are desirable.

Experience: A minimum of one year of full-time, relevant public contact experience, with occasional public speaking, requiring problem solving and/or field investigation in code enforcement, law enforcement, investigations, or a comparable field that would provide the requisite knowledge needed to succeed in this position. Experience in the enforcement of municipal, planning and zoning codes and working with building or planning permits at a public or private agency is desirable.

Certifications: Possess, or obtain within 12 months from hire date, current certification as a Code Enforcement Officer from the California Association of Code Enforcement Officers (CACEO); or certification as a Housing Inspector from the International Conference of Building Officials (ICBO- through the American Association of Code Enforcement). Certification under Penal Code 832 Module A (California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training) or similar police training is desirable.

License: Possession of a valid Class C California Driver's License.

The Public Works Department is responsible for operating, maintaining, and improving the City’s public infrastructure – streets, water, storm, public buildings, the City’s fleet, trees, parks, and traffic signals. The Department also reviews plans and inspects construction of public improvements to serve private residential and commercial development and plans the capital and operating budgets.

The Department is seeking to hire engineering and public administration interns to provide support for several programs as described below:

The City of Burlingame Department of Public Works is currently recruiting for a Senior Civil Engineer.  This is a senior level position that manages staff and major program areas in the Engineering Division; performs professional engineering work, project management and coordination of a variety of public works and transportation projects. Performs difficult, professional civil engineering work in the planning and design of street, water, sewer and other public works facilities. Coordinates with City Departments, private engineers, inspectors and contractors on technical details of public works facilities. This is a full-time position that requires significant administrative, analytical and technical skills acquired by advanced professional training and experience. Incumbents of this classification are expected to have a breadth of knowledge and experience to successfully manage complex projects with considerable independence.

Essential Functions (including but are not limited to the following)

• Must be able to work independently with minimum supervision and guidance from the Assistant Director of Public Works;
• Must be able to plan and manage complex projects, perform difficult and complex engineering work, project management and represent the engineering division at City Council and Commission Meetings in the absence of the Assistant Director of Public Works;
• Strong written and verbal communication skills for preparing Engineering reports and making presentations to the public and agencies;
• Supervises and participates in the design of engineering plans and specifications for the construction of streets, street lighting, traffic signals, parks and recreation facilities, building facilities, storm, sanitary sewer and water systems, parking facilities and other structures;

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge of:  Principles, practices and methods of civil engineering as applied to the planning, designing and construction of streets, storm drainage water systems, building facilities, traffic operations and analysis and other systems; design principles, strengths of materials, stress analysis and principles of mechanical, electrical and structural engineering and surveying as they apply to the design of public works structures; city codes and ordinances; principles of supervision, training and performance evaluation; applicable laws, legal issues and regulatory codes related to design and construction; principles and practices of municipal management including personnel, budget planning and preparation and public relations.

Ability to:  Plan, assign and manage division priorities; effectively supervise and train professional, technical and clerical support staff; learn and retain City administrative, budgeting, purchasing and personnel processes and procedures; perform complex civil engineering studies, transportation studies; analyses and design; identify problem areas and develop alternative solutions and recommendations; determine adherence to engineering, specifications on a wide variety of improvements and construction projects; express technical information to non-engineering staff, maintenance personnel and consultants; develop plans and programs responsive to current mandates and needs; communicate clearly orally and in writing; manage a wide variety of projects simultaneously; develop and maintain cooperative working relationships with others to coordinate public works activities with other city departments, divisions and outside agencies; operate computer system and associated engineering applications; learn, retain and apply various laws and regulatory codes relevant to assigned area of responsibility.

Skills:  Make accurate engineering computations and drawings; familiarity with Computer-Aided-Drafting is desirable; ability to operate survey equipment, e.g., experience with spreadsheets and word processing computer programs.

License/Registration:  Possession of a valid Class C California Driver’s License. Valid registration in the State of California as a Professional Engineer in Civil Engineering.

Education and Experience:  Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or a closely related field from a recognized college or university. Six years in professional civil-engineering work involving engineering design, plan checking, project management and two years of supervisory responsibility. Additional related experience may be substituted for formal college education on the basis of two years’ experience for each year of formal college education.

Physical, Mental, and Environmental Working Conditions

Physically able to perform functions that would allow sufficient mobility to negotiate difficult construction terrain where crouching, climbing, and/or kneeling would be required. Ability to maintain cooperative working relationship with all those contacted in the course of work; remain calm during emergencies and when talking to irate citizens; exercise good judgment at all times; to enforce regulations with tact and diplomacy; to explain technical matters simply and patiently; to analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action; to sit for long periods of time at a desk or in a car; a self-starter with good judgment, sufficient vision, hearing and stamina to perform the above functions. The Selection Process

Woodside Fire Protection District has an exciting opportunity to join our Fire Prevention Department.

Under the supervision of the Fire Marshal or their designee, the Wildfire Defensible Space Inspector (Per Diem/Part- Time) supports wildfire prevention efforts across the District. This position is seasonal and ideal for those interested in public service, environmental safety, or fire prevention.

This part-time, per diem role is responsible for inspecting properties to ensure compliance with wildfire prevention and fuel mitigation requirements. You'll engage with residents, educate the public, and help reduce wildfire risk across the District.

Police Officer

Description:  Performs law enforcement and crime prevention work, controls traffic flow and enforces state and local regulations. Some essential duties are:

• Makes arrests, issues citations, and gives warnings when appropriate

Qualifications: Must either be currently employed as a sworn Peace Officer in California and have successfully passed an FTO program, or have completed a Certified POST Basic Academy.

Education: Graduation from a U.S. High School or equivalent is required.  Additional education at the college level is preferred.

Licenses:  Possession of or the ability to obtain a valid California driver’s license by the time of hire, and ability to maintain the valid license.

Physical Requirement: Meet standards of adequate physical stature, endurance and agility. Vision: • 20/100 correctable to 20/30, with adequate depth perception and color vision. If soft contacts are worn, no limit on uncorrected distance visual acuity provided soft lenses have been worn for at least six months prior to the physical examination.

SALARY:  Step A ($120,598.79) to Step E ($146,552.90) annually. Officers can earn up to an additional 27.5% above the base salary through qualifying incentives, such as specialty pay (5%), evening differential (5%), bilingual pay (5%), Master Officer pay (2.5%), and Master's degree incentive (10%). This results in potential annual compensation of approximately $153,763 at Step A to approximately $186,851 at Step E. 

THE DEPARTMENT
The Burlingame Police Department is a municipal, full service, community oriented department.  We offer a variety of investigative, preventative, and community policing programs to both protect and serve a community that spans five square miles and is home to more than 28,000 residents.

The Burlingame Police Department is divided into two divisions: Operations and Administration.  The force currently consists of 40 police officers, made up of the Chief of Police, 1 Captain, 2 Lieutenants, 6 Sergeants, 6 Corporals, 2 Inspectors, and 22 Patrol Officers.

POSITION
Burlingame Police Officers are responsible for preventing crime, arresting law violators, directing traffic, etc.  In that capacity, officers may also serve in special assignments such as K-9, detective, SWAT, hostage teams, FTO, and motorcycle patrol.

What You’ll Do

The Senior Engineer supervises and participates in the conduct of complicated engineering planning, design, and investigation activities.

Some duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Supervise and participate in the development of designs, plans, specifications, and estimates for the construction of public works projects related to the WWTP.
• Coordinate with contractors, construction managers, construction inspectors, and the design engineers to resolve issues during construction.

Interview Process

All applications, résumés (required) and responses to supplemental questions received will be reviewed for minimum qualifications. A fully completed application is required; a résumé does not replace the information required on the employment application, including work history. Applications with "see résumé" as a substitution for the work experience description, those with none or unclear current/past employment information, or those with insufficient information to evaluate possession of minimum qualifications will not be considered; missing information cannot be assumed. A limited

number of the most highly qualified applicants will be invited to participate in the examination process, which may consist of an oral panel interview, written exercise, training and experience application review, or in the form of a practical demonstration of skill and ability, or any combination of these; a Teams oral panel interview is tentatively scheduled for May 13, 2026.

An employment list will be established from those who pass the examination process. Current and future vacancies may be filled from this list. The list will remain in effect for at least six months with the possibility of an extension for an additional six months. Once placed on an employment list, and at the time a vacancy occurs, eligible candidates may be contacted by the hiring department and scheduled for additional department interviews.

The Skywalker Fire Brigade Fire Chief (FC) position will supervise, lead, and train the Skywalker Fire Brigade (Department). This is a management position for 9 employees that staffs one private fire station and has the opportunity to build and direct a motivated staff of firefighters. The Fire Chief will oversee three duty Captains and their projects, providing guidance and leadership for the organization. The Fire Chief will oversee daily schedules with regard to standard prevention activities, training, and special events. Oversee fire prevention inspections, lead vegetation management projects including pile burning, shaded fuel breaks, and interact with the property insurance agent and facilities manager for future projects. The Chief will represent the Skywalker Fire Brigade during county-wide meetings for Operations and Training. Skywalker Fire employees provide an extraordinary level of customer service and hospitality to Skywalker Properties' clientele. While this role operates within a Brigade fire department, the position itself is mostly comprised of prevention and training. This is a great opportunity to train and develop individuals in a unique, private environment with a dedicated and passionate team to support our mission.

Skywalker Holdings has several locations. The Fire Brigade operates at The Skywalker Ranch in Marin County, Nicasio, CA. Skywalker is a private organization that operates 5,000 acres of wildland urban interface land with various types of infrastructure within it. At the Presidio (San Francisco, CA) there are numerous buildings that are also included in the prevention responsibilities. The Ranch operates numerous buildings, smaller organization and other operations within the that support the greater vision of Skywalker Properties Ltd.  

Schedule:

This position will work a semi-flexible 40hr work week as to oversee and manage 3 shifts who are on a 48/96 work schedule. Flexibility is determined by the President and subject to department need as well attending any critical meetings with leadership teams. Remote work hours may be included in the flexibility.

Although rare, there are times when the Chief might have to back-fill staffing and/or provide staffing on apparatus due to non-fillable vacancies or training needs.
