Deputy Fire Marshal
Salary Range: $6,750.00 to $13,383.33 Monthly
 

This position will report directly to the Fire Marshal. The Deputy Fire Marshal is an advanced level position. Duties include, but are not limited to reading, interpreting, and enforcing all State statutes and regulations under the authority of the State Fire Marshal (SFM), and all standards as adopted by SFM as well as UCDH policies. This position will act as a technical leader with a high degree of knowledge in the overall field and recognized expertise in specific areas. This position will regularly lead projects of critical importance to the organization; these projects carry substantial consequences of success or failure. May direct programs with organizational-wide impacts that include formulating strategies and administrating policies, policies, processes, and resources. In this position, the individual will perform detailed inspections of buildings under the authority of the UCDH Fire Marshal’s Office. Provide fire and life safety education to occupants. Analyze hazardous materials and functional use of space during construction plan review and validate post-occupancy use for compliance. This position may serve as State Fire Marshal (SFM) Designated Campus Fire Marshal (DCFM) for the UCDH Hospital and other UCDH medical¬ related facilities. Note, that SFM has the sole authority to approve a candidate as an SFM DCFM.

Additionally, persons in this position are expected to perform plan reviews, construction inspections, and existing building inspections, participate in the Incident Command System, and understand and apply Joint Commission and CMS requirements, NFPA Standards, and California Code of Regulations.

Required Qualifications 
Applicants are encouraged to upload license and certification if required of the position. 

• OSFM Fire Inspector 2A- 2D training class series and/or ICC Building Code Certification.
• Must possess a valid California Driver’s License
• Five (5) years of experience in building, fire, or hazardous materials inspections.
• College education/training equivalent to a BS level in Fire Science, Construction, Chemistry, or similar related field.
• Experience working within “Authority Having Jurisdiction” for enforcement of regulations, or someone who has completed an apprenticeship (time/experience) and is fully educated/experienced in construction.

Preferred Qualifications 

• OSFM Certification as a Fire Inspector 2
• ICC Building Code Official Certification
• Hazardous Material Inspection experience.
• Experience in hospital inspections &/or construction.
• Thorough knowledge and skill in one or more of the following fields: Hazardous Materials Inspections, Laboratories, Hospital &/or Construction Inspections.
• Demonstrates excellent working knowledge of the California Health and Safety Code sections under the authority of the Office of the State Fire Marshal, California Code of Regulations Title 24, NFPA, and other standards required for Fire Prevention activities within the state of California.
• The ability to manage programs that include formulating strategies and administering policies, processes, and resources while functioning with a high degree of autonomy.
• Decision-making is based on established procedures and integration/interpretation of relevant laws, regulations, and organizational policy; professional best practices; relevant science methodology, impact on other UCDH programs; and senior management approvals. Decisions may impact other programs, departments, segments of the organization, and/or organization wide.
• Knowledge and understanding of all aspects of the job; ability to intermittently analyze work papers, reports, and special projects; identify and interpret technical and numerical information; observe and problem solve operational and technical policies and procedures; determine compliance; identity, interpret, explain, and enforce violations; review and interpret codes and rules; maintain awareness of safety at all times.

• Ability to exercise independent judgment in solving issues and adhering to the UCDH Policies and Procedures.
• Analytical and problem-solving skills to handle a wide variety of assignments in different phases to determine appropriate action.
• Ability to recognize when a problem or emergency must have an immediate response and then be able to initiate action.

Special Requirements 

• Must participate in the department’s DMV Pull Notice Program. Must pass a pre-employment Live Scan Fingerprinting Background check.
• Administrative deadlines or emergency incidents will require the incumbent to work a certain amount of unscheduled non-paid overtime.
• Typically, this position provides services during normal business hours of operation; however, the individual must be able to work flexible hours that can include days, nights, weekends, and holidays. Occasional overtime as required to meet operational needs.
• Ability to work in a high-stress structured environment.
• Ability to maintain maximum confidentiality and professionalism while working with complex issues.
• Ability to work in a non-smoking environment.
• The incumbent will be exposed to alarms and other auditory warning devices. Must be able to function in a multi-disciplinary and fast-paced work environment while maintaining the need for quality, accuracy, completeness, and timelines.
• This position requires individuals to have the mobility to climb ladders and stairs and be able to differentiate between various alarm signals.
• This position may, at times require the incumbent to work with or be in areas where hazardous materials and/or infectious diseases are present and, as such, the incumbent will be required to participate in a medical monitoring program and other programs necessary to enter a hazardous materials environment.
• Will be required to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions; tolerate very hot and very cold temperatures; walk over rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces; work at heights greater than 10 feet; climb ladders or steps to reach objects; work in small, cramped areas; bend or stoop repeatedly or continually over time; discriminate among colors or match colors of wiring systems and color-coded valves and piping; stand or walk for extended periods of time with the inability to rest at will and use arms above shoulder level. When not performing duties in the field, incumbents work in an indoor office setting and are required to enter data into a terminal, PC, or keyboard device; produce written documents using proper grammar, punctuation, and spelling; use graphic instructions, blueprints, and layouts as part of the plan review process when checking for code compliance; and sit for extended periods of time with the ability to move at will.

The City of Menlo Park is seeking a Public Works Supervisor - Trees in the Maintenance Division of the Public Works department. The Maintenance Division provides many of the basic services that affect the daily lives of everyone who lives, works, visits and commutes within the City. The Maintenance Division provides support to all City departments and provides service 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to address emergencies during non-working hours. The Maintenance Division is located in the City's Corporation Yard.

Under general direction, assists the City Arborist with overseeing the City’s tree maintenance, planting, inventory, risk management, and emergency response programs. Makes assessments of work needs and responds to citizens requesting city tree inspections and service. Directs the work of tree crews involved in the planting, pruning, and removal of city street, park, median, and plaza trees. Inspects quality and quantity of work and act as the City’s liaison between work crews and the public. Maintains accurate records of work and schedules and ensure compliance with specifications and regulatory requirements. Assists in the enforcement of the City’s Heritage Tree Ordinance.

A position in this class is characterized by having a substantial background in arboriculture in order to make sound technical tree-care related decisions and strong communication skills in order to interact effectively with the public, work crews, and other City staff. This classification is distinguished from the City Arborist role in that the Public Works Supervisor – Trees directly oversees the implementation of the city’s tree programs on the ground and supervises employees and contractors assigned to that program. The City Arborist role, on the other hand, involves responsibilities such as overall program management, budgetary management, review of development projects and heritage tree protection plans, and the authority to issue heritage tree permits. The Public Works Supervisor – Trees role is distinguished from all other City maintenance classes through the specialized arboriculture knowledge required and its responsibility for all phases of work performed by tree maintenance crews.

The City of San Bruno is seeking one Principal Civil Engineer with a strong focus on Land Development (LD) and Traffic. Those with experience in Capital Improvements Program (CIP) are also encouraged to apply.  The LD/Traffic and CIP Divisions are within the Engineering Section of the Public Works Department.   

Under the supervision of the City Engineer, the Principal Civil Engineer will manage complex land development, traffic and CIP projects and will coordinate the activities of consultants and junior level staff in a variety of supporting disciplines.  The Principal Civil Engineer will be establishing Division processes and procedures and ideally have strong delegation and managerial capabilities.   

The Principal Civil Engineer of LD/Traffic will be responsible for overseeing private development, encroachment permits, Public Works Engineering plan review of building permits, and traffic engineering and coordinate with transportation planning.  This position will supervise junior staff including three engineers for land development and traffic.  The City currently has several transformative projects including Reimagining Tanforan, YouTube, Crestmoor Development, and Engvall School Development.

Other duties will include supervising the review of private development and/or subdivision plans for conformance to standards and participating in the development of capital improvement plan and projects and may from time to time be responsible for delivering key CIP projects. 

The City’s CIP budget for fiscal year 2025-26 totals $137 million and consists of 118 projects, including the replacement of Fire Station 52, the construction of water tanks, water and sewer mains and pump stations, railroad grade separation, and transportation projects.  The community additionally passed a local measure, which provides for enhanced funding for pavement treatment and storm drain infrastructure.  The breadth and depth of projects within a medium sized community provide endless opportunities for professional growth. 

The ideal Principal Civil Engineer candidate will possess the following:   

• Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in civil engineering or a closely related field 

• Possession of a master’s degree in civil engineering or public or business administration is desirable 

• Five (5) years of increasingly responsible experience performing program management and/or project coordination duties in engineering, two (2) years of which equivalent to a Senior Civil Engineer. 

• Possession of a valid California driver’s license or the ability to obtain one prior to employment. 

• Possession and maintenance of a valid registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of California, or possess Professional Engineer Registration in another state with the ability to obtain California registration within six (6) months 

• Municipal professional engineering and supervisory experience highly desirable 

• Experience in the development of standard operating procedures and policies

Compensation

The annual salary range for this position is currently $153,726 to $188,641. These are represented positions.

What You’ll Do
The Assistant/Associate Transportation Planner performs professional transportation planning work; conduct and review transportation impact studies; prepare plans, studies, and reports; and to do related work as required. 

Assistant Transportation Planner - The Assistant Transportation Planner is an entry level class in the transportation planning series. This class is distinguished from the Associate Transportation Planner by the performance of the less complex tasks and duties assigned to positions within the series including assignments in the fields of multi-modal transportation associated projects, master plans, specific plans, policies, and programs. Assignments are generally limited in scope and within the design and procedural framework established by higher level employees. However, as experience is acquired, the employee performs with increasing independence. Since this class is typically used as a continued training class, employees may have only limited work experience. This classification receives general supervision from the Parking Manager, or a higher-level position.

Associate Transportation Planner - The Associate Transportation Planner is a journey level class that performs duties relating to multi-modal transportation and associated projects, master plans, specific plans, policies, and programs. This class is distinguished from the Assistant Transportation Planner by the performance of the full range of duties as assigned including complex plans review, policy development, and advance report preparation. This position requires a high degree of independent judgment exercised on diverse and specialized assignments. It is further distinguished by its major program management responsibilities. This classification receives general direction from the Parking Manager, or a higher-level position. May exercise technical and functional supervision over lower-level staff as assigned.

Depending upon assignment, duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: 

• Review and analyze land development projects including but not limited to VMT, TDM, LOS, parking compliance and other transportation related issues.

• Assist the day-to-day operations of the City’s 3,000+ on and off-street public parking spaces in downtown San Mateo along with public parking spaces in other commercial areas such as 25th Avenue. Duties may include customer service for commercial parking areas, ordering parts for paid parking equipment, evaluating monthly permit parking programs and making policy recommendations, ensuring that signage in restricted parking areas is in good condition and correct for the restriction needed.

• Evaluate and make recommendations on technical aspects of transit planning, capital, or operating projects involving various transit modes such as rail, auto traffic, bicycle and pedestrian transportation and paratransit parking.

• Participate in the development of policies, procedures, and operational actions related to effective parking management, including periodic review of parking related policy issues such as rates, time limits, enforcement hours, loading zones, and other issues.

• Assist or lead in The City’s Residential Parking Permit Program and downtown parking permit program. Duties may include responding to resident inquiries, evaluating new RPPP program area applications, conducting parking occupancy studies, assisting in permit data analysis, establish new public/private lease agreements and participating in community meetings. 

• Provide recommendations resulting from the analysis of alternative transportation system improvements; forecast and prepare transportation capital improvement program project lists. 

• Assist in the compliance of the circulation element of the General Plan, and the City's component of any county or regional transportation plan; provide information and technical support necessary for the development of the City's Transportation Demand Management program. 

• Prepare and/or review reports and studies related to the functioning, improvement and impacts on the transportation system. This may include the evaluation of alternative network improvements and the impacts of proposed or forecasted land development projects.

• Provide support for grant-funding to deliver transportation capital improvements projects, in coordination with Caltrans, San Mateo County Transportation Authority, Metropolitan Transportation Commission, and other agencies; identify and pursue grant funding opportunities in support of transportation related goals for the City.

• May review and check the work of subordinate personnel on specific projects for technical accuracy. May obtain consultants and manage consultant contracts.

• Work with other jurisdictions, congestion management agencies, citizens, business, or professional organizations as necessary. 

• Assist other sections, divisions, or departments on matters related to transportation planning. 

• Develop requests for proposals for parking services, equipment, and technology in coordination with the Police Department. 

• Prepare administrative reports and make presentations to the Sustainability and Infrastructure Committee, City Council, various committees, and advisory boards as directed. 

• Research and draft ordinances and policy for review. 

• Prepare initial studies; coordinate the preparation or review of environmental impact reports; participate in coordinating City planning activities with outside departments. 

• Collect, record and summarize statistical and demographic information; establish and maintain a comprehensive database.

• Perform related duties as assigned.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This is the full journey-level classification in the wastewater treatment plant operator series. Incumbents independently perform the full range of wastewater treatment and reclamation and recycled water facilities and equipment operations and maintenance duties. Responsibilities include inspecting and attending to assigned areas in a timely manner to ensure the proper operation and maintenance of the City’s wastewater treatment plant systems and equipment. Positions at this level work independently, exercise judgment and initiative and receive occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise. This class is distinguished from the Lead Plant Operator in that the latter is responsible for providing technical and functional direction to operations staff and is capable of performing the most complex operations and maintenance duties assigned to the division.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED/EXERCISED

Receives supervision and direction from the Wastewater Treatment Plant Manager or designee. Exercises lead oversight, including provision of technical supervision, assignment of work and/or the training of less experienced staff.

ABOUT THE POSITION

The City Clerk plans, organizes, and directs all functions and responsibilities of the City Clerk's office as specified by the City Manager and as required by law. This is a Non-Represented Confidential Position. The incumbent reports directly to the City Manager.*

Important and Essential Duties

The City Clerk performs the following duties which may include, but are not limited to:

• Coordinates and prepares agenda for City Council and designated commission meetings. Reviews agenda items for compliance with legal requirements.
• Organizes completed staff reports. Reproduces and distributes agenda packages to appropriate individuals and organizations.
• Ensures the City Council meeting room is in proper order for all Council meetings.
• Attends City Council and designated commission meetings, acts as recording secretary and prepares minutes promptly following the meetings.

• Maintains the Municipal Code and establishes supplemental procedures in order to update and republish the Code as required.
• Coordinates, plans, and conducts regular and special consolidated municipal elections in coordination with the County of San Mateo Elections division. Oversees campaign and Fair Political Practices Commission related filings according to established procedures and State law for elected officials and designated employees.
• Coordinates and/or performs all clerical functions for the City Council.
• Certifies action taken by the City Council regarding conveying or receiving property. Files documents, as required, with the County Recorder.
• Manages the citywide records management program, according to the Council-adopted Retention Schedules.
• Serves as custodian of the official City Seal and archives.
• Maintains custody of official records including ordinances, resolutions, contracts, agreements, deeds, minutes, and certifies copies as required.
• Attests, publishes, indexes and files ordinances and resolutions.
• Oversees the publication of legal notices, bid notices, postings, and other mailings.
• Coordinates the appointments to city boards, commissions, and committees.
• Prepares, administers, and monitors assigned budget.
• Updates City Council-related web pages on City website, as needed.
• Trains, evaluates, supervises and disciplines staff assigned to the City Clerk function.**

About the Jack Drago Youth Art Internship:

The Jack Drago Youth Art Internship is a paid summer opportunity designed to support and elevate the next generation of artists in South San Francisco.  Open to one graduating senior residing in South San Francisco or attending school with SSFUSD, this internship offers an immersive experience working alongside City staff and arts professionals to explore, create, and contribute to the vibrant cultural fabric of South San Francisco.

Drago Youth Art Internship Highlights:

• Duration: Summer 2026
• Hours per week: 20 hours per week, approximately 4 hours per day between the hours of 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM (Monday through Friday), with occasional evening and weekend hours as needed.
• Project: The intern will have the opportunity to lead and contribute to a meaningful arts initiative that engages the South San Francisco community.
• Mentorship & Experience: This position will be able to collaborate with staff, engage with community members, and gain real work insight into careers in the arts. 

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (may include but are not limited to the following):

• Assisting with general office duties related to arts programming, including organizing files, organizing artist databases, preparing materials, emails, and phone calls.
• Conducting fieldwork and research related to public art.
• Creating and managing social media content and scheduling to promote arts initiatives. 
• Supporting community outreach efforts through special event participation, flyer creation and distribution, and in-person engagement.
• Practicing professional communication such as communicating with local businesses and community members to help build connections and promote the City’s cultural art initiatives.
•  Developing and distribution of surveys to gather public input and feedback for arts programs.
•  Contributing creative ideas to enhance public engagement and support the City’s Cultural Arts Program initiatives. 
• Performs other related duties as required. 

QUALIFICATIONS: Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities would be:

We are currently recruiting for three positions: Recreation Coordinator - Special Events, Senior Services, and Meals on Wheels. These positions are full-time, fully benefitted positions with the Parks, Beaches, & Recreation Department. Details follow below!

DEFINITION

Under general supervision, plans, organizes, publicizes, coordinates, and administers community and recreation services for various age groups; organizes and conducts special events.

Recreation Coordinator positions will be assigned to one or more of the following areas: administration; aquatics; contract classes, community rentals and facilities; senior services; Meals On Wheels, city-wide special events; youth and teen services, and community outreach.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This classification provides support to the City’s diverse range of recreation and community service programs.  This classification is distinguished from the Recreation Supervisor in that the latter is a full supervisory classification that has broader responsibility for a wider range of programs.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED/EXERCISED

Receives general supervision from higher-level supervisory staff and oversees assigned staff, contractors, and volunteers.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTION REQUIREMENTS

• Plans, coordinates, evaluates, organizes, and implements diversified recreation services and special events of assigned area(s).
• Ensures compliance of standards and regulations for assigned programs, as required by Agency, Contracts, County, State, etc.
• Recommends alternatives for improving services as needed, considering factors such as cost/benefit and marketing analysis, availability of resources, safety of personnel and effects on operations and level of service; recommends or implements improvements as directed.
• Keeps accurate records, maintains program budgets, completes city paperwork and other administrative tasks.
• Communicates with a variety of agencies, vendors, community groups, clients, governmental and members of the public in a courteous and professional manner.
• Responds and resolves inquiries and concerns from the public and escalates inquiries as needed.
• Schedules and assigns work,
• Trains, and instructs assigned volunteers.
• Recruits, orients, evaluates, and recognizes contractors, and volunteers.
• Initiates and collaborates to develop a range of marketing materials for various purposes, including programs, events, informational content, and educational initiatives.

• Coordinate the payroll process with any and all part time staff that are signed to them, including comparing schedules to timecards, entering timecard information into a citywide timecard and invoice system, monitoring staff hours, and auditing timecards for mistakes Senior Services Programs:
• Oversees the organization of all senior programs, encompassing drop-in activities, contracted classes, and social gatherings. Provides support in overseeing the Seniors In Action Council, including the organization of events, programs, and meetings.
• Perform related duties as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge of:

• Basic concepts and techniques for organizing, developing, implementing and evaluating recreational programs, services, and events.
• Advanced English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
• Business correspondence writing and report preparation.
• Basic budget and fiscal control procedures and techniques and basic cost recovery principles.

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINES:

Experience:

One year of experience in recreation and community services.

Experience coordinating and facilitating programs and special events is desirable.

Training:

Equivalent to a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in recreation, human services or a closely related field.

Licenses and Certifications:

Must possess and maintain a valid California Class C driver’s license and have a satisfactory driving record.

Must possess American Red Cross First Aid certificate and CPR Adult, Child, and Infant CPR within six months of appointment.

When assigned to Aquatics, must possess American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification including First Aid and CPR at time of appointment. Title 22 Certification required within one year of appointment.
