The City of Patterson is seeking to fill one (1) part-time Recreation Specialist position in the Recreation Department for their sports program and to establish an eligibility list.  Duties include, but are not limited to: implement a wide range of programs that foster community development that include youth/adult sports, special events, open gym, and youth development activities.  This position will require assistance of general office duties and may include supervision of volunteers and staff, and performs related duties as assigned.

This position is established for 19 hours a week, but will vary depending on programming needs, and will be working weekdays, evenings, weekends and holidays.

Part-Time – Multiple Positions Available (10 to 20 Hours per Week)

The City of San Bruno Recreation and Aquatic Center is hiring for Fitness Instructors/Personal Trainers, with a particular focus on strength and conditioning. Position Summary
Fitness Instructors/Personal Trainers play a key role in supporting clients’ health and fitness goals by:

• Leading group strength and conditioning classes and personal training sessions.

• Monitoring client progress, ensuring proper form, and providing feedback.
• Creating a motivating, positive environment for participants.
• Delivering excellent customer service and addressing fitness-related inquiries.
• Ensuring the fitness facility is safe, clean, and fully operational.

Minimum Qualifications

• Graduation from high school or GED equivalent.
• Current certification in personal training or group fitness instruction (e.g., ACE, NASM, or other recognized certification).
• At least one year of experience in fitness instruction, personal training, or related field preferred.
• Experience in strength and conditioning, group instruction, and one-on-one training is highly desirable.

Knowledge and Skills

• Knowledge of strength and conditioning techniques, fitness principles, and wellness practices.
• Ability to motivate and instruct individuals and groups effectively.
• Strong communication skills for clear instruction and positive feedback.
• Skill in assessing client needs and designing individualized programs.
• Ability to safely operate and maintain fitness equipment.

Special Requirements: 

• Current certification in First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). 

• Fitness certifications (e.g., Personal Trainer, Group Fitness Instructor) from a nationally recognized organization.

POSITION

To assist in planning, implementing, coordinating, and evaluating recreation programs and events, including but not limited to Teen Programs, Youth Programs, Aquatic Programs, Senior Programs, Adult Programs, promotional events, special events and excursions. Create activity schedules, budgets and promotional materials. Train, schedule and assign program staff and volunteers; assist in the development of staff evaluations. Assist with coordination and scheduling of the recreation or aquatics programs. Promote and maintain safety in the workplace. Maintain records and statistical data on programs. Issue, secure and maintain program equipment and supplies. Ability to work flexible hours. Ability to drive a large van to transport materials, and participants to various activities. Regular, predictable, consistent and timely attendance is an essential function of the position, in that employee must be present to work to complete assigned tasks.

OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS

For all work assignments:

• Enforce all rules and regulations and lead youth programs as assigned.
• Teach aquatic programs and perform lifeguard duties as assigned.
• Certify lifeguards when requested.

QUALIFICATIONS

When assigned to Aquatics:

The Recreation Coordinator will be responsible to perform lifeguarding duties, ensuring the safety of patrons, enforcing pool regulations, and responding to emergencies as needed. Additionally, they will need to train, certify, supervise and schedule lifeguards. During operating hours, on-site presence is required to ensure smooth operations and safety compliance.

When assigned to Youth Program(s) (i.e. Teen Programs, Youth Programs, etc.):

The Recreation Coordinator will be responsible for developing, coordinating, and supervising youth-oriented programs. Specific duties include: Planning and implementing recreational, educational, and enrichment activities tailored to different age groups. Recruiting, training, scheduling, and supervising program staff, volunteers, and instructors. Ensuring a safe and inclusive environment by enforcing program policies and addressing behavioral issues, as needed. May be required to perform lifeguard duties, as needed.

Minimum Education and Experience:

Education: High School diploma or equivalent. Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in recreation or a related field is preferred.

Experience: Two (2) years of increasing responsible experience in the delivery of recreation services. A bachelor’s degree may be substituted for one (1) year of experience.

Licenses or Certificates: Required upon hire: Valid California Driver’s license

Required within six (6) months of hire:

Possession and maintenance of a current American Red Cross First Aid Certificate or equivalent.

Current American Red Cross Community CPR Certificate (or equivalent)

When assigned to aquatics (in addition to recreation programs), the following are required and must be maintained during the course of employment:

Required upon hire: Valid California Driver’s license, American Red Cross Lifeguard Training with CPR and First Aid (or equivalent)

Required within six (6) months of hire: American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (or equivalent), American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor Trainer, First Aid for Public Safety Personnel (Title 22 equivalent).

DEFINITION: Under general supervision the aide assists in planning, organizing, and implementing preschool programming for children ages 3-5 years old. Program hours are M-F PM 8:30am – 1:00pm and/or MWF 8:30am - 1:00pm. Approximately 15 – 30 hours a week. Substitute and floating positions also available 8:30am - 1:00pm. 

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

• Assists in the development, coordination, planning, implementing and supervising the day-to-day activities, themes and special events for an ongoing preschool program.
• Create and maintain a safe, challenging and creative environment.
• Supervise and engage preschool students during preschool hours.

Summary:
Under general supervision, plan, conduct, and participate in recreational program activities according to established programs, schedules, and standards, in accordance with District policies and procedures.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

• Develop, conduct, and participate in various athletic, craft, social, cultural, and instructional activities
• Prepare facilities for programming, special events, or rental group usage
• Greet visitors, direct participants to the appropriate location, and respond to general inquiries
• Ensure safety of environment and equipment for staff, volunteers, participants, and visitors
• May open or close and secure facilities in compliance with District policies and procedures
• Issue and collect recreation equipment and supplies used by instructors, participants, or visitors

Minimum Qualifications:

Education and Experience:

• First Aid & CPR/AED within 90 days of employment with ability to maintain certifications thereafter as a condition of employment.
• Valid California driver’s license with a good driving record and current automobile insurance.
• Department of Justice fingerprint clearance.
• Proof of a negative TB skin test.

Ability to communicate effectively in English in both written and oral form. Ability to write routine correspondence using correct spelling and grammar. ABOUT THE POSITION: This position will receive immediate direction from the Management Analyst II. They provide a variety of clerical support and perform a wide range of customer service-related tasks in a fast paced, high touch environment.
