Established in 1866, the San Francisco Fire Department is rich in tradition and history. From the Great Earthquake and Fire of 1906 to the Loma Prieta Earthquake of 1989, the Department has grown to meet the many challenges along the way. Today, the San Francisco Fire Department serves an estimated 1.5 million people, providing fire suppression, fire prevention and emergency medical services to the residents, visitors and workers within San Francisco's 49 square miles.

Under general supervision, an H002 Firefighter engages in firefighting and related activities for the saving of life and property; administers first responder treatment, including first aid; and responds to a variety of emergency situations involving public safety and medical care. A Firefighter also may be assigned duties in connection with fire prevention activities, including the inspection of businesses, schools, and homes to ensure fire safety; maintaining station quarters; and performing other duties as assigned. Firefighters are required to work 24-hour shifts, including weekends and holidays. During those shifts, a Firefighter lives and works in close quarters with three or more individuals at a fire station. A Firefighter must cooperate and work effectively with the other members of his or her team.

Age: Applicants must be at least 19 years old at the time of application and must be at least 20 years old at the time of appointment. [Civil Service Rule 310.15]

Education: Applicants must have a high school diploma or an equivalency certificate (e.g., G.E.D., California High School Proficiency Certificate) to apply.

Driving Record: Applicants must possess a valid Class A, B, or C California Driver License by the time of their appointment. Applicants will not be considered eligible to participate or to be appointed if any of the following occurred, or is in effect at any time, during the period from “one year prior to application up to the date of appointment”:

(a) Any offense that subsequently results in a conviction for driving under the influence, reckless driving, or hit and run with personal injury or property damage over $25.00.
(b) License suspension or revocation, three moving violations in 12 months, 5 moving violations in 24 months, or probation as a result of a driving-related offense.

1) Firefighter Candidate Testing Center (FCTC) Written Test
The FCTC Written Test was developed by the California Firefighter Joint Apprenticeship

Committee (Cal-JAC).
The FCTC Written Exam is a 100 question, multiple choice test consisting of the following four

sections:

• Section 1 – Recall and Comprehend Verbal and Visual Information. This section requires candidates to watch two short videos and answer questions based on the scenarios presented.
• Section 2 – Apply Mechanical Reasoning
• Section 3 – Solve Mathematical Problems
• Section 4 – Recall and Comprehend Technical Information from Written Materials

The FCTC Written Test is administered, at minimum, quarterly. Additional tests will be added as needed, so check this website frequently. FCTC does not administer online tests.

Scores will be added to a candidate's FCTC record within one week of the test date. Candidates must achieve a minimum passing score of 70%. The Public Safety Team will obtain candidate scores from FCTC.

2) Emergency Medical Technician Certification: Candidates must possess at minimum an NREMT certification verified through FCTC to be placed on the eligibility list. Candidates must possess or be in the process of obtaining their EMT - 1 Certification (EMT-1) issued by the State of CA in order to be invited to the Chief’s Interview. Possession of a current, valid CA Paramedic license [in good standing] may be provided in lieu of the EMT certification. Confirmation of your EMT-1 application with the SF EMSA will be verified by the SFFD during the Chief’s Interview. Candidates must be able to accredit with the local EMS Authority within the one-year probationary period if accredited in a different California County. 3) Candidates must have a valid CPAT with a testing date within one year during the Chief’s Interview and maintain their CPAT through the date background packets are due.

DEFINITION

To operate a computer aided dispatch system receiving calls and dispatching police, fire or other City services.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This is a journey technical level position in which incumbents are expected to independently perform the full range of duties assigned. This class is distinguished from the Communications Supervisor in that the latter provides technical and functional supervision over assigned communication personnel.

The Communications Center in the Support Services Division of the Hayward Police Department is responsible for dispatching both Police and Fire Services throughout the City of Hayward. The Hayward Police Department is one of 18 CALEA (Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement) accredited police departments in California and is committed to maintaining CALEA's high standards and broadly recognized excellence.
The Communications Center is frequently the first point of contact that a member of the public will have when requesting assistance from the City of Hayward. The information gathered by the communications operator during this contact is critical to a positive outcome. The Communications Center consists of six (6) stations with each communications operator assigned to a specific job.
 


 

Essential Duties

Duties may include but are not limited to the following: 

Receives emergency and non-emergency calls from the public, private companies and other jurisdictions.

Dispatches police and fire personnel or other City services in response to such calls.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION

Any combination equivalent to experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Experience: Two (2) years of heavy public contact experience while performing multiple tasks simultaneously. Public Safety dispatch experience is desirable.

Education: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth (12th) grade.

Licenses and Certificates: Completion of the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Basic Public Safety Dispatcher course is highly desirable.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Typing Certificate: A typing certificate with 35net words per minute must accompany your application.

THE POSITION

Under general supervision of a Police Sergeant, the Reserve Police Officer is a sworn position assigned to field operations to patrol for the prevention and detection of crime and enforcement of laws and regulations within the philosophy of community oriented policing.  Incumbents are normally expected to solve most work problems independently and to refer to supervisory personnel only those matters which involve policy decisions, technical questions and unusual problems at the entry level and make recommendations at the advanced level.

SELECTION PROCESS:

THE DEPARTMENT: The Suisun City Police Department is a progressive and proactive law enforcement agency. As a result of its proximity to neighboring jurisdictions, the employees of the Suisun City Police Department remain extremely busy as they address the needs of the community.

THE POSITION: Under general supervision of a Police Sergeant or other supervisory/management staff, performs a variety of duties related to the protection of public health, safety, and welfare and the enforcement of applicable federal, state, and local laws; provides traffic enforcement and control; and carries out special assignments in a particular phase of police work. The Police Officer is an entry/journey level class responsible for performance of the full scope of assigned law enforcement duties and responsibilities. New incumbents may have limited related experience but are expected to learn the full range of duties and responsibilities, perform duties with minimal direct supervision, and exercise sound judgment and discretion in making decisions.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.

• Patrols assigned areas of the City to preserve law and order, discover and prevent commission of crimes, and enforce traffic and other laws and ordinances; maintains awareness of and remains alert for wanted suspects, known criminals, stolen vehicles, missing persons, traffic violators, and crimes in progress; makes arrests; issues warnings and citations.
• Responds to calls for the protection of life and property, the enforcement of laws and ordinances, general public service calls, and complaints including those involving automobile accidents, traffic hazards, misdemeanor and felony incidents, domestic disturbances, health code and local ordinance violations, property control, civil complaints, and related incidents; responds to and provides assistance at a variety of public service type calls that are non-criminal in nature.
• Conducts initial and follow-up investigations at scenes of incidents to which summoned or observed; determines what, if any, crime has been committed; collects, preserves, processes, photographs, and books evidence; locates and interviews victims and witnesses; identifies and interrogates suspects. • Prepares and serves search and arrest warrants; apprehends and arrests offenders for crimes committed under federal, state, and local laws and codes; controls and mitigates people under the influence of drugs or alcohol or other potentially hostile situations.
• Directs traffic at special events or emergency situations; provides traffic and crowd control at community and emergency events.

Laterals may be eligible to receive a hiring bonus of up to $20,000 disbursed in four equal phases: the first phase upon successful completion of the testing process and acceptance of a final offer of employment, and the last phase two years after completion of the probationary period as a Police Officer.

Essential Duties

Duties may include but are not limited to the following:

• Patrols the assigned area on foot or in patrol vehicle, makes routine security checks, inspects places of possible disorder and keeps alert to discover suspect circumstances or persons.

• Provides information, directions, other services and assistance to the public.
• Inspects patrol cars/motorcycles, equipment and weapons to ensure proper operation.
• Prepares for and participates in planned events; stands and directs traffic at collision scenes and demonstrations; controls crowds; and cooperates with City, State and other agencies to secure areas at special events or crime scenes.
• Participates in special details and assignments.
• May serve as a field training officer.
• Perform related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION 

Any combination equivalent to experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Experience: One (1) year in a law enforcement agency within the last thirty-six (36) months and possession of a current Basic California P.O.S.T Certificate.

Education: High school diploma or equivalent (possession of an Associate's degree or Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution is desirable).

License
Possession and maintenance of a valid Class C California Driver's License.

Necessary Special Qualifications: 

- Free of any felony convictions.

- A citizen of the United States or a permanent resident alien who is eligible for and has applied for citizenship (Government Code Para. 1031).

- 21 years of age at time of appointment.

- Vision in each eye, correctable to at least 20/30.

- Must pass a background investigation.

- Must meet all Department medical, physical and psychological standards.

DEFINITION:

Under general administrative direction of the City Manager, plans, directs, manages, and  oversees the activities and operations of the Public Works Department including streets, utilities, water treatment and wastewater treatment, ensures all resources within each division are  properly allocated and managed; provides long range planning for department programs, projects, and needs; coordinates assigned activities with other departments and outside  agencies; and provides highly responsible and complex administrative support to the City  Manager.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS:

The Director of Public Works is considered a Department Director with responsibility for directing the activities of a Department within the City. Positions at this level serve as a member of the City's senior management team and provide advice and counsel to the City Manager regarding strategic policy and problem-solving issues relating to the assigned Department and the City overall. The incumbent is responsible for accomplishing the City's goals and objectives related to assigned program areas.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

• Assumes full management responsibility for all Public Works Department services and activities including streets, utilities, water treatment, and wastewater treatment.
• Manages the development and implementation of departmental goals, objectives, and priorities for each assigned service area; recommends and administers policies and procedures.
• Establishes, within City policy, appropriate service and staffing levels; monitors and evaluates the efficiency and effectiveness of service delivery methods and procedures; allocates resources accordingly.
• Assesses and monitors workload, administrative and support systems, and internal reporting relationships; identifies opportunities for improvement; directs and implements changes.
• Plans, directs, and coordinates, through subordinate level staff, the Public Works Department’s work plan; assigns projects and programmatic areas of responsibility; reviews and evaluates work methods and procedures; meets with key staff to identify and resolve problems.
• Selects, trains, motivates, and evaluates assigned personnel; provides or coordinates 

• staff training; works with employees to correct deficiencies; implements discipline and termination procedures.

• Oversees and participates in the development and administration of the Public Works Department budget; approves the forecast of funds needed for staffing, equipment, materials, and supplies; approves expenditures and implements budgetary adjustments as appropriate and necessary.
• Directs the activities and operations of the City's utilities, streets, and equipment maintenance programs; ensures maintenance activities are completed on time and within budget.
• Provides staff assistance to the City Manager; prepares and presents staff reports and other necessary correspondence.
• Represents the Public Works Department to other departments, elected officials, and outside agencies including community organizations; develops community resources; coordinates assigned activities with those of other departments and outside agencies and organizations.
• Explains, justifies, and defends department programs, policies, and activities; negotiates and resolves sensitive and controversial issues.
• Responds to and resolves difficult and sensitive citizen and business owner inquiries and complaints.
• Performs related duties as required.
