The Community Services Department is committed to providing quality programs, services, and spaces to benefit the health and well-being of the community. Within Community Services, the Parks Maintenance Division is responsible for the maintenance of all City’s outdoor recreation sites, including 20 parks covering 68 acres, 6 baseball fields, 128 acres of open space, all City owned facilities, over 7 miles of medians, and one dog park.   

Under the supervision of the Parks Field Supervisor, the Parks Maintenance Technician
performs semi-skilled, skilled and administrative work within Parks Division in areas such as general carpentry, electrical or plumbing repair, irrigation system installation, tree trimming, tree removal, root removal, the planting and care of new trees, and the care and maintenance of all related equipment. 

CORE DUTIES 

Examples of duties may include, but are not limited to: 

• Plans, carries out and evaluates preventive maintenance schedules for all designated mechanical equipment, either personally, or through outside vendors.  

• Inspects, diagnoses, and performs major and minor repair work on motors, hydraulic equipment, compressors, controls, valves and related equipment.  

• Operates a variety of diagnostic instruments and a variety of hand, electric, and air- driven tools. Tests, troubleshoots, services and repairs mechanical equipment.  

• Inspects, adjusts and replaces necessary units and related parts in the performance of repair and maintenance work.  

• Fabricates and modifies parts and equipment as necessary. 

• Evaluates status of mechanical equipment, and performs or schedules needed repairs. Provides emergency field assistance to disabled equipment as needed and appropriate.  

• Assists in the preparation of bid specifications for equipment.  

• Maintains records, prepares reports and other specialized maintenance records of equipment. 

• Operates aerial lift truck, brush chippers, stump grinders and chainsaws and related hydraulic pruning equipment.  

• Identifies tree pests, disease and structural weakness, removes diseased, dead or excess limbs, branches or trees.  

• As required, trims trees from the ground and with the use of aerial lift devices, picks up trimmings or wood and loads into truck, debris box or brush chipper for disposal.  

• Climbs and trims trees using ropes and saddle or other equipment.  

• Sets up rigging, slings and lines for lowering cut limbs and branches. Plants, stakes and installs new trees. 

• Performs lamp replacement on sports field lighting fixtures. 

• Performs other duties as assigned.  

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 

Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be: Parks Maintenance Technician I Graduation from high school or GED equivalent with possession of technical training in a specialized field of maintenance. Two (2) years of increasingly responsible repair and maintenance experience. Parks Maintenance Technician II Graduation from high school or GED equivalent with possession of technical training in a specialized field of maintenance. Four (4) years of increasingly responsible repair and maintenance experience. 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS  

Possession of a valid Class "B" Commercial Driver's License, or ability to successfully obtain prior to completion of probationary period; and Specialized certifications for functional work areas required:  

When assigned as a Tree Maintenance Technician I/II:  

Utility Line Clearance Certification, or ability to successfully obtain prior to completion of probationary period.  

Tree Worker Certification from the International Society of Arboriculture, or ability to successfully obtain prior to completion of probationary period (Tree Technician II only).  

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED  

Motorized vehicles such as pick-up, utility van, aerial and/or dump trucks; traffic control devices; mobile or portable radio; telephone; personal computer; hand tools; power tools; ropes, pulleys, winches; safety apparatus.  

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may work either indoors or in outside weather conditions. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and vibration. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock. The employee may be required to work night, early morning, or weekend hours, depending on workload factors, in addition to normally scheduled work hours.  

Employee is subject to call back after hours, weekend assignment and to respond to emergency situations on a 24-hour basis, seven days per week in addition to normally scheduled work hours.  

The noise level in the work environment can range from moderately quiet to loud.

About the Department

Senior Planner

Definition

Performs complex professional planning work and provides direction, coordination and supervision of planning studies in the areas of both current and long-range planning; assists in the administration of zoning regulations and the planning and land use activities of San Bruno; and to do related work as required. This is a Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) exempt position.

Examples of Duties and Responsibilities

• Performs duties and responsibilities of the Assistant/Associate Planner and:
• Manages complex land use applications, analyzing for compliance with Federal, State and local regulations, policies and guidelines.
• Prepares agreements and manage consultant work as needed for planning tasks.
• Implements Housing Element programs and policies.
• Assists in the administration, review and revising of the zoning ordinance, general plan, and subdivision ordinance.
• Plans, organizes, and implements activities related to land use and planning for the future development of the City, including population estimates and demographics, economic growth, land use, zoning, and social statistics.
• Coordinates planning activities with other City departments and other planning agencies.
• Serves as technical advisor, including both verbal and written presentations, to the Planning Commission.

Qualifications

Knowledge of:

Theory, principles and practices of governmental planning and zoning; State and County laws and regulations relating to municipal planning, zoning and development; statistics and statistical analysis as applied to land use, transportation, zoning and master plan studies; principles and techniques involved in the development, implementation, and maintenance of the City’s long range plans; and current trends in federal, state and local planning.

Ability to:

Collect and analyze complex data and formulate well-developed recommendations and alternative courses of action for difficult planning and land-use problems, including revisions in a General Plan consistent with State Law and local needs; review and evaluate architectural plans for compliance with zoning regulations and other local, State, and Federal requirements; demonstrate sound professional judgment and logical reasoning using both creativity and pragmatism; establish and maintain cooperative and effective relationships with public and private officials and with members of the public; and speak clearly, forcefully, and effectively before professional, governmental, civic and business groups.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

• Graduation from an accredited college or university with a major in planning or related field. At least four (4) years of increasingly responsible experience in public planning work. A Master's degree may substitute for one year of the required experience.

THE POSITION:

The City of Sunnyvale is seeking an effective and skilled communicator, and highly motivated problem solver for the position of Principal Transportation Engineer/Planner.  This management position reports directly to the Transportation and Traffic Manager in the Public Works Department and will be responsible for:  assisting with planning, organizing and coordinating the activities of the Division of Transportation and Traffic; and perform professional traffic engineering, transportation planning, designing, and project management.

This position will supervise a small team within the Division to accomplish specific tasks and high-level, community-oriented projects. Current projects include: East Channel Trail study; Mary Avenue Overcrossing over highways 101 and 237; Bernardo Avenue railroad undercrossing; Sunnyvale Avenue and Mary Avenue railroad grade separations, liaison with the County for the Lawrence Grade Separation project; and coordinating with VTA as part of the delivering Measure B transportation projects. The position will manage multiple consultant contracts and will be expected to coordinate and work closely with other staff within the Division and with staff within other departments such as Public Works, Community Development, Environmental Services, and Public Safety, and represent the City with outside agencies such as the Valley Transportation Authority, Caltrain, High Speed Rail, Caltrans, MTC, County of Santa Clara, and adjacent cities.

The position will focus on advancing the projects mentioned above, assist with oversight of the design and traffic signal operations, implementation of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS); assist with the coordination of Division of Transportation and Traffic activities with other divisions and departments; oversee and assist with oversight of the grant application preparation, reporting, and management for transportation projects; assist with planning and coordinating division workload and budgets; creating and sustaining cooperative and collaborative working relationships across the City, with the development community, and residents; attend and present at public meetings/City Commissions; and provide assistance with highly complex traffic engineering work. The City of Sunnyvale is seeking a Library Services Manager, Lakewood Branch Library, at the Sunnyvale Public Library. Under general direction of the Deputy Director of Library Services, the Library Services Manager develops, implements, and evaluates public services at the Lakewood Branch Library and Learning Center with a focus on community engagement, access, equity and innovation. They provide strong leadership for adults, children, technology, and outreach to deliver services, programs and resources in response to community needs. They manage a multifaceted team of full- and part-time librarians and support staff.

The Library Services Manager is a coach, mentor, and guide with proven skills in leading people and managing programs and budgets. They will be a highly collaborative, motivated and customer-focused individual with excellent communication skills. The ideal candidate will want to be part of a dynamic leadership team, a risk-taker, solve problems with a growth mindset, and promote new initiatives in Sunnyvale’s first-ever branch library facility. They will have experience in at least one or more major public library functional areas and the ability to apply their skills across all ages, community and operational needs. Previous experience demonstrating successful collaboration with school and community partners, and bilingual skills are valued.

The Library Services Manager position is in the Library division of the Department of Library and Recreation Services (LRS). LRS encourages the growth and development of a strong community by providing life-long learning opportunities, safe and welcoming spaces for community engagement, and life skills support for people of all ages and abilities. This position works occasionally on nights and weekends in support of library programs and services.
