This is the journey level classification in the Mechanic series. The Mechanic performs a range of skilled tasks requiring journey level mechanical ability and aptitude. This is a seasonal, part-time position for the Parks & Grounds division.

Under the general supervision of a Public Works Streets Supervisor or Parks & Grounds Supervisor, and direction of a Maintenance II lead, incumbents in this classification assist with the cleanup and maintenance of City parks, streets, and satellite facilities including buildings, equipment, bus stops, parking lots, trails, flora and landscapes; and perform related work as required.

POSITION SUMMARY

Under supervision (Account Clerk I) or general supervision (Account Clerk II), performs a wide variety of responsible clerical and technical accounting work involved in performing financial record keeping and reporting duties in support of assigned accounting system, function, or program area including in the areas of utility billing, accounts receivable, accounts payable, payroll, business licenses, and revenue collection and cash management; provides information and assistance to the general public and City departments; maintains file and records; and performs a variety of clerical tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility.

This is a broad classification with individual positions assigned to specific functional areas; duties and assignments may overlap depending on the operational needs of the department and staffing levels.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Account Clerk I - This is the entry-level class in the Account Clerk series performing the more routine and less complex clerical accounting support and customer service assignments while learning City policies and procedures. Positions at this level are not expected to function with the same amount of program knowledge or skill level as positions allocated to the Account Clerk II level and exercise less independent discretion and judgment in matters related to work procedures and methods. Work is usually supervised while in progress and fits an established structure or pattern. Exceptions or changes in procedures are explained in detail as they arise. This classification is flexibly staffed with Account Clerk II. Advancement to the “II” level is based on demonstrated proficiency in performing the assigned functions and is at the discretion of higher level supervisory or management staff.

Account Clerk II - This is the full journey level class within the Account Clerk series. Employees within this class are distinguished from the Account Clerk I by the performance of the full range of clerical accounting support duties as assigned including performing the full scope of clerical financial record keeping transactions, customer service functions, and related support duties. Employees at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise, and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit. Positions in this class series are flexibly staffed and are generally filled by advancement from the “I” level, or when filled from the outside, require prior experience. Advancement to the “II” level is based on management judgment and/or certification or testing that validates the performance of the full range of job duties. This classification is distinguished from the Senior Account Clerk in that the latter is responsible for the more complex and difficult technical duties within the area of assignment and may provide lead direction to other Account Clerk positions.

1.       Perform a variety of responsible clerical accounting and financial office support duties in support of assigned accounting system, function, or program area including in the areas of utility billing, accounts receivable, accounts payable, payroll, business licenses, and revenue collection and cash management.

2.       Prepare, maintain, and/or verify a variety of accounting, financial, and statistical records, ledgers, logs, and files; gather, assemble, tabulate, enter, check, verify, balance, adjust, record, and file financial data; codes data according to prescribed accounting procedures; reviews information to ensure accurate reporting; resolve discrepancies; establish and maintain various files and records.

This recruitment is for an Electrician based at the City’s Water Reclamation Plant, with work focused on the plant’s industrial systems (please note: prior experience in solely residential electrical work is not qualifying.

THE POSITION

Under general supervision, the Electrician performs a wide variety of skilled work in the installation, maintenance and repair of electrical infrastructure systems and equipment in support of the divisions of the Public Works Department. 

Examples of duties include:

• Performs skilled electrical and electronic installation, repair, service and maintenance work on a variety of electrical installations, systems, pumps, meters, and other equipment in City facilities, which include working on and around high voltage, 480-voltage, and multi-phase motors
• Inspects and repairs motor control circuits and variable frequency drive systems
• Inspects, maintains, and repairs electrical switch gear, transformers, underground transmission power
• conductors, relays, motors, pumps, generators and a variety of other types of electro-mechanical equipment
• Reads and interprets electrical and mechanical drawings and specifications

Under general supervision, performs professional accounting work involving the City’s various grants, budget process, and other accounting work as required.

DISTINGUISING CHARACTERISTICS

This is a professional level accounting position in the Administrative Services Department.  Under general supervision, incumbents in this class perform the full range of accounting assignments in various areas of governmental, budgeting and accounting for grants.

Summary Description

Under immediate supervision (Water Distribution Operator I) or general supervision (Water Distribution Operator II), performs skilled maintenance, repair, and construction work on the potable water treatment and distribution system of the water utilities services division; operates maintenance and construction tools and equipment; performs a variety of maintenance tasks relative to water distribution and treatment.

Water Distribution Operator I: This is the entry level class in the Water Distribution Operator series. This class is distinguished from the Water Distribution Operator II by the performance of the more routine tasks and duties assigned to workers in this series. Employees at this level are not expected to perform with the same independence of direction and judgment on matters related to City established procedures and guidelines as are positions allocated to the II level. Since this class is typically used as a training class, employees may have only limited or indirectly related work experience. Employees work under immediate supervision while learning job tasks.

Water Distribution Operator II: This is the full journey level class within the Water Distribution Operator series. This class is distinguished from the Water Distribution Operator I by the assignment of the full range of duties assigned. Employees at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise, and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies within the work unit. Positions in this class are flexibly staffed and are normally filled by advancement from level I.

THE POSITION

Under general direction from the City Engineer, or designee, the Associate Engineer will perform moderately complex, professional engineering work, and serve as project manager for capital improvement projects under the guidance/direction of the City Engineer, or designee. Work involves responsibility for complex engineering duties associated with the planning, design, construction, inspection, and coordination of civil engineering and public works projects. This position may also exercise indirect supervision over professional and technical staff. The ideal candidate will possess strong ethics, be a problem solver with a service focus and highly responsive. They will thrive in and foster a team-oriented and collaborative environment. 

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Prepare all phases of engineering design, plans, and specifications and estimates for the construction of public works projects under the guidance/direction of the City Engineer.
• Inspect project sites to assist in the solution of difficult problems; interpret plans, specifications, City policy and prepare change orders.
• Review engineering calculations, plans, and specified materials for accuracy and compliance with regulations.
• Perform a variety of engineering calculations for hydraulics, street design, right-of-way, and grading.
• Provide information to the public on department operations and current and proposed projects.
• Conduct traffic and transportation studies; design, develop, and implement traffic signal timing systems; perform system analysis and provide recommendations to improve signal system effectiveness under the guidance/direction of the Transportation Manager and/or City Engineer or designee.
• Review and update City standard plans and specifications.
• Review plans, specifications, and engineering calculations for accuracy of design and completeness; review and recommend engineering requirements for minor subdivisions, commercial buildings, and residential projects; check traffic signal plans, lighting, and striping plans; oversee right-of-way engineering work; conduct final inspection of site improvements and public improvements for compliance with City specifications.
• Review and make recommendations on technical reports and studies.
• Coordinate engineering-related activities with other City departments, divisions, and outside agencies.
• Prepare preliminary and final cost estimates; assists in the preparation of the capital improvement budget and program; administer agreements and contracts for capital improvement projects; review payment requests; coordinate change orders and field directives under the direction of the City Engineer or designee.
• Preside over bid openings and pre-construction meetings with contractors and design firms; coordinate engineering work with other departments, consultants, public utilities, developers, and property owners; confer with City, State, and other officials to resolve problems involving engineering projects; resolve and assist others in the resolution of disputes between the City and contractors concerning plans, specifications, and extra work.
• Attend engineering meetings and conferences to keep abreast of current municipal engineering techniques.
• Perform related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of

• Principles and practices of engineering.
• Modern methods, materials, and techniques used in the design and construction of a wide variety of public works engineering projects.
• Applicable local, State, and Federal laws, regulations, ordinances, and engineering standards pertaining to the design and construction of public works and traffic control systems.
• Construction contract administration and estimating of construction work.

Ability to

• Make complex engineering computations and to check, design, and supervise the construction of a wide variety of public and private facilities.
• Communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing.
• Use computers to perform engineering calculations and designs.
• Read, evaluate, and interpret moderately complex plans, specifications, technical reports and electronic/electrical schematics.
• Prepare accurate plans, layouts, specifications, cost estimates, and engineering reports under the direction of the City Engineer or designee.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION

• Experience: Four years of responsible and relative experience in professional engineering work, including project design and project management experience.
• Education: Equivalent to a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in civil engineering or a closely related field.

LICENSE OR CERTIFICATE

Possession of a certificate of registration as a professional engineer in the state of California. Possession of an appropriate California driver's license and ability to maintain a satisfactory driving record.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

The City of Pleasant Hill offers a comprehensive compensation and benefits program. For detailed benefit information, please review the Memorandum of Understanding between the City and Professional & Confidential Employees Association. 

• Sign-on Bonus:  One-time $5,000 bonus.  $2,500 on hire and $2,500 after successful completion of one (1) year probation. The bonus is subject to taxes and is not reportable to CalPERS.
• Monthly Salary: $9,987 to $13,244, and appointment will be based on the qualifications and experience of the selected applicant. Effective 11/1/2025: 3.5% COLA ($10,337 to $13,708/month).
• Health/Medical Benefit: Choice of coverage with Kaiser or Blue Shield. The City pays 75% of the Kaiser monthly premium at each coverage level. In lieu of medical coverage, the employee may elect to receive $400 (employee only coverage) or $500 (employee + 1 coverage) or $600 (family coverage) in cash or a pre-tax contribution into a MissionSquare Retirement 457 deferred compensation plan.
• Dental & Vision Coverage: City-paid for employee and eligible dependents.

The City of Berkeley invites you to apply for the position of Advanced Practice Provider in the Health, Housing & Community Services Department! In this role, you will make assessments, provide treatment based on a patient's physical and psychosocial condition, provide patient counseling and guidance in the maintenance of health and the prevention of illness; and perform other related work as required.

In the Public Health Division, the Advanced Practice Provider provides health care at the Berkeley High School Health Center (BHSHC) and the City of Berkeley's Public Health Clinic. This position has overall responsibility for the delivery of clinical care and supports other clinical staff.

This is an hourly, part-time position working up to 19 hours per week. It is not a benefited position.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

A typical way of gaining the knowledge, skills and abilities outlined above is:

• Equivalent to graduation from a Physician Assistant program from an accredited institution approved by the Physician Assistant Board of California (PAB) and one year of clinical experience in a health-related occupation; OR
• Equivalent to completion of a graduate-level Nurse Practitioner program from an accredited institution approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN). Completion of an approved preceptorship and appropriate academic training in an area of specialization covering extended roles in traditional nursing and must meet all other requirements as an advanced practice registered nurse as specified in standards by the California Board of Registered Nursing.
