The Department: 

The Department of Public Works (DPW) constructs, maintains and improves various components of the City’s infrastructure and provides quality, cost-effective, timely services to the residents and businesses of Santa Clara. DPW is responsible for a wide variety of programs throughout the City which include implementation of solid waste and urban run-off pollution prevention programs, design, construction management, inspection and maintenance of City streets, bridges, storm drain systems, traffic signal systems, building facilities, fleet, street trees, landscaping and the closed landfill. The Mechanical Maintenance Position is in the Facilities Division of the Public Works Department.

The Position: 

The Mechanical Maintenance Worker is a journey level technical classification. This classification operates, lubricates, cleans, adjusts, and makes repairs to heating, ventilating, refrigeration, emergency generators, solar systems, and other stationary building equipment, and installs and troubleshoots electrical systems up to 480 volts. The Mechanical Maintenance Worker is distinguished from the Mechanical Maintenance Foreman/Forewoman in that the latter is a supervisory position responsible for supervising Mechanical Maintenance Workers and Utility Workers in the maintenance and repair of the mechanical equipment found in City buildings.

The annual salary range for this position is $104,936.40 - $133,560.72. This position may be filled at or near the minimum of the salary range. 

Minimum Qualifications:

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Minimum Education Requirements: 

Graduation from high school or possession of a GED

Minimum Experience Requirements: 

Two (2) years of experience in the maintenance, operation, installation and troubleshooting of diesel and gas engines, centralized heating, ventilation, emergency generators and air conditioning units, related mechanical equipment and electrical systems (up to 480 volts) found in heavy duty machinery or large buildings, such as manufacturing plants, office buildings, or public buildings.

Acceptable Substitution: 

None. 

License/Certifications: 

• Possession of a valid Class C California driver's license is required at time of appointment and for the duration of employment.
• California State issued Forklift Certification by the end of the probationary period.
• HVAC/Refrigerant certification required at time of appointment and for the duration of employment.

Desirable Qualifications: 

Experience with building management systems, such as Direct Digital Control (DDC), Variable Air Volume (VAV), and other related electrical control systems is desirable.

Other Requirements:  

• May be required to work odd and unusual hours in the performance of duties and in emergency situations.
• Must be able to perform all of the essential functions of the job assignment.

Assistant Engineer I - Civil: $112,985.60 - $144,539.20 Annually
Assistant Engineer II - Civil: $124,696.00 - $159,619.20 Annually

Overview:

The Assistant Engineer I/II in the Construction Management Services Unit performs essential execution-level civil engineering and construction management support functions for Valley Water capital construction projects. This position performs professional engineering tasks related to managing construction contracts, including reviewing and processing contractor submittals and requests for information (RFIs), interpreting contract documents, evaluating design changes, and supporting change orders and construction claims. The Assistant Engineer I/II provides continuity during the transition from pre-construction into construction by supporting constructability review, contract administration setup, early contractor coordination, and issue resolution as work progresses. The role supports project delivery by providing timely technical analysis and coordination support under the direction of Associate and Senior Engineering staff to manage construction risks related to cost, schedule, and compliance.

Key Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

• Perform professional civil engineering duties in support of construction contract management for various capital projects, including technical review of construction activities, evaluation of construction issues, and coordination with construction management, inspection staff, and contractors to support issue resolution.
• Review, track, and respond to contractor RFIs, submittals, shop drawings, and design clarifications; interpret contract documents and coordinate with design engineers and construction management staff to support timely resolution of construction issues.
• Support evaluation and documentation of construction contract changes, including change orders, force account work, and claims; assist with technical analysis and preparation of supporting documentation.
• Review plans, specifications, and contractor-submitted work products for conformance with professional codes, standards, and Valley Water requirements as part of quality control and constructability support efforts.

Ideal Experience:

Ideal Knowledge:

• Principles, practices, concepts, and standards of engineering as applied to the assigned field/specialty of engineering.

Ideal Training and Education:

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in civil engineering or a related field.

OR

Possession of a valid California Engineer-in-Training (EIT) Certificate with two (2) years of associated paraprofessional engineering experience.

Best qualified candidates, depending on level (Assistant, Staff, Senior), will have a Bachelors Degree and between at least one (1) to three (3) years of previous experience developing affordable housing using Federal and State funding sources, pro formas and financial model analysis, and reviewing and negotiating real estate development transactional documents. Strong problem-solving and effective communication skills to work with all cross-functional partners through the project.
