The Department

The Finance Department provides accurate, transparent, complete, and timely financial information to support the City’s operations while ensuring South San Francisco long-term fiscal sustainability. The department is responsible for safekeeping, management, and accounting of the City’s financial assets. The department is responsible for payroll administration, accounts payable processing, business licenses issuance, risk, and debt management, while acting in a fiduciary capacity for assessment districts.

POLICE OFFICER - Academy Graduate - $8,134 to $11,030 per month (up to $12,684 with incentives)

The City of Pleasant Hill is currently seeking applicants for Police Officer Academy Graduate. We offer excellent pay, benefits, opportunities for promotion, as well as the opportunity to serve a great community that values the services we provide.

Police Officers can serve in patrol, traffic, investigations, and K-9 assignments. Other collateral opportunities include instructor positions (Firearms and Force Options Team), Regional SWAT, Mobile Field Force, 10851 Task Force, CSI, Regional Major Accident Investigation Team, Driving Team with firearms and force options team, Crisis Intervention Team (CIT), FBI Safe Streets Task Force, SET Team, Drone Team, Social Media Team, Community Resource Officer, School Resource Officer, and Field Training Officers. Specialty assignments may add an additional 5% pay. 

Officers work 12-hour shifts as part of a team concept. Shift schedules include 4-10 and 3-12, which may be changed periodically as job assignments may be rotated among patrol, traffic, and criminal investigation.  Night shifts include 5% additional pay. 

EDUCATION:

Academy Graduates (no sworn experience) - High school diploma and a minimum of 45 units of college-level course work, in addition to graduation from a P.O.S.T. basic academy.

Academy Graduate candidates with an honorable discharge may be credited with up to 15 semester units for a minimum of 3 years of active duty in the U.S. Armed Services (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard).

Facilities Maintenance Technician II (journey-level class in the classification series)

Responsible for performing the full range of maintenance duties at City buildings and facilities in order to ensure that all are maintained in a safe and effective working condition and provide the highest level of safety for City and public use. Incumbents are responsible for performing maintenance and alterations on buildings and facilities, electrical and mechanical systems, identifying and evaluating construction-related problems, and performing installation and repairs on plumbing systems. Incumbents are expected to work independently and exercise judgment and initiative. Positions at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit. This class is distinguished from Senior Facilities Maintenance Technician in that the latter is responsible for technical and functional supervision of lower level maintenance staff and is capable of performing the most complex duties assigned to the series.

Senior Facilities Maintenance Technician (advanced journey-level class in the classification series)

Responsible for providing lead supervision and training to facilities maintenance staff. Incumbents regularly work on tasks that are varied and complex, requiring considerable discretion and independent judgment, including performing the most complex duties required to ensure City buildings, facilities, and grounds are maintained in a safe and effective working condition and provide the highest level of safety for public use. Responsibilities include training, developing and scheduling Facilities Maintenance Technicians, inspecting and attending to assigned areas in a timely manner, and performing a wide variety of tasks in the maintenance and repair of City buildings, facilities and grounds. Positions in this classification rely on experience and judgment to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the assigned section. The work involves problem-solving of unique issues or increasingly complex problems without precedent and/or structure. Assignments are given with general guidelines and incumbents are responsible for establishing objectives, timelines, and methods to deliver work products.

Positions in the Facilities Maintenance Technician class series are flexibly staffed and positions are normally filled by advancement from the previous level; progression to the next level is subject to management approval and is dependent on the incumbent (i) performing the full range of duties assigned to their current level, and (ii) acquiring the knowledge, skill, and experience necessary to meet the minimum qualifications for the next level of the series.

About the Position

The City of San Mateo Library Department is looking for a highly qualified Deputy City Librarian

The Position

The City of San Mateo is seeking a qualified and experienced Deputy City Librarian to serve in a key leadership role within the Library Department. Reporting to the City Librarian, the Deputy City Librarian acts as the Library’s chief operating officer and directly supervises division managers overseeing Children’s/Literacy Services, Information Services, and Circulation/Technical Services. The Deputy City Librarian also plays a lead role in cross-divisional project management, operational oversight, strategic plan implementation, and in representing the Library at meetings and public events.

• Prioritizes work of staff; develops and trains staff; conducts performance evaluations; approves actions regarding hiring, promoting, and disciplining; and approves recommendations on all employee actions.
• Reviews changes in laws, regulations, and guidelines for their effect upon Library activities; evaluates the effect of such changes, and recommends and implements changes to policies and procedures as required for compliance.
• Assumes management responsibility for all daily operations, departments, programs, and services of the Library.

• Reviews the work plan for the Supervising Librarians and Supervising Library Assistant; meets with each to identify and resolve problems.

• Assists in the coordination of library activities with other City departments and outside agencies.
• May participate in the delivery of library services.
• Be a community liaison and lead in fundraising relating to service outreach and marketing.
• Assists in the preparation of the annual budget for the library; estimates staffing, equipment, and supply needs based upon recent trends and planned activities; monitors monthly expenditures after budget adoption; oversees disposition of surplus materials; and approves purchase requisitions.
• Prepares a variety of reports and correspondence; reviews internal policies and procedures; develops content for press releases and other material for dissemination to the public.
• Represents the City and Library in the community, within the Peninsula Library System, and at professional meetings and committees, as necessary.
• Responds to citizen inquiries; investigates and resolves patron complaints and concerns; applies the principles of good customers service and instills it in staff members.

Under general supervision, provides clerical and administrative support to a department head, division head, section supervisor and/or supervisory and professional staff within a variety of City departments.  Typical functions may include, but are not limited to reception, word processing, record keeping, and filing.  May also perform related work as assigned.

CLASS CHARACTERISITICS:

Office Specialist I – This is the entry-level class in the Office Specialist series.  Initially under close supervision, incumbents learn office and City procedures.  As experience is gained, there is greater independence of action within established guidelines.  The Office Specialist I class includes part-time and temporary positions with incumbents available to provide relief support to a variety of City departments.  This class is alternately staffed by the Office Specialist II class.  Full-time incumbents may advance to the higher level after gaining experience and demonstrating proficiency which meet the qualifications of the higher class.

Office Specialist II – This is the journey-level class in the Office Specialist series.  Requires the competency to independently perform a variety of office support duties.  All positions are characterized by the presence of fairly clear guidelines from which to make decisions and the availability of supervision in non-routine circumstances.  Specific duties, including the amount of typing, word processing, and use of on-line of personal computers will vary with the organizational unit to which you are assigned.  This class is distinguished from Office Specialist III, which is the working lead-level of the series, because that class performs more complex and/or specialized office clerical support functions.  Full-time incumbents may advance to the higher level after gaining experience and demonstrating proficiency which meet the qualifications of the higher class.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES (illustrative only):

• Types correspondence, reports, forms and specialized documents related to the functions of the organizational unit to which assigned from drafts, notes, dictated tapes, or brief instructions, using a typewriter, word processor, or personal computer.
• Proofreads and checks typed and other materials for accuracy and completeness; compliance with departmental policies; and correct English usage, including grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
• Enters and retrieves data and prepares reports from an on-line or personal computer system, following established formats.
• Prepares and updates a variety of reports, which may require the use of arithmetic calculations and maintains records and processes forms, such as payroll records, purchase requisitions and orders, and others specific to the organizational unit.
• Establishes and maintains office files; researches and compiles information from such files.
• Provides factual information regarding City or unit activities and functions.
• Reviews computer-produced reports for accuracy and makes corrections as required.

The City of Menlo Park is currently recruiting for two city planners to join the Community Development Department. The planner series (assistant and associate) provides an excellent opportunity to gain technical and project management skills and experience in both current and long range planning. As a small city department with a wide variety of projects, our city planners have the opportunity to work closely with an interdepartmental team on a variety of projects and subject areas.

The Community Development Department works to ensure a sustainable and vibrant community that supports economic wellbeing and a high quality of life for Menlo Park’s residents, businesses, and visitors. It performs numerous vital core services that include long-range planning, current planning, and building permitting and inspection services.

The Community Development Department includes the Building, Housing, and Planning Divisions. The Planning Division includes a current planning and long range planning team. The current planning team generally focuses on project management at multiple levels ranging from building permit reviews to environmental analysis of complex development projects. The advanced planning team currently focuses on the implementation of the City’s long range and policy documents.

As part of the recruitment, the City will evaluate candidate interests, experiences, and education to determine which level the candidate could fill and whether the candidate would be on the current or long range planning team.
