POLICE OFFICER TRAINEE

PAY: $34.13 Hourly

The City of Sebastopol is looking for a respectful, compassionate, empathetic Police Officer Trainee. The selected candidate must be currently enrolled or enrolled at a future date as a self-sponsored recruit in a certified Peace Officer Standards & Training Council (P.O.S.T.) Police Academy. The Police Officer Trainee is a non-sworn, training-level classification requiring no prior law enforcement experience. The incumbent performs a variety of entry-level police support duties in a learning capacity. The selected candidate will assist and observe Police Officers and civilian police personnel.

The successful candidate will attend the Police Academy to obtain a Basic P.O.S.T. Certificate of Completion, and perform related work which may require public contact but not the enforcement of laws. Police Officer Trainees attend a POST certified Police Academy, which follows a standardized curriculum in order to provide them with basic training in various aspects of policing, many of which are prescribed by law and/or statute.

The Police Academy training is designed to provide the candidate the necessary skillsets to prepare them for consideration for promotion to a probationary Police Officer position within the City and begin the Sebastopol Police Department’s Field Training Officer program. Attendance and successful completion of a Police Academy is a legal requirement to be hired as a Police Officer within the State of California and is a requirement for a City of Sebastopol Police Officer Trainee to be considered for promotion to probationary Police Officer with the City of Sebastopol.

The selected self-sponsored academy candidates will receive a conditional offer upon a qualified application and full hourly pay while attending the police academy. 

The City will hire at the Police Officer Trainee or Police Officer rank, depending on the qualifications held by the pool of qualified applicants. Please see our concurrent Police Officer recruitment for more information.

The Police Officer Trainee will demonstrate cultural competency working with all community members regardless of cultural differences or circumstances, including race, ethnicity, religion, language, gender identity, age, marital and familial status, sexual orientation, diverse physical and learning abilities, socioeconomic status, and other identities.

A Police Officer serves under general supervision, performing essential law enforcement duties to protect life and property while enforcing applicable laws. Officers may also carry out special assignments as needed, along with other related duties.

Requirements:

• Candidates must have completed a California P.O.S.T. Certified Police Academy
• Must be 21 years of age as of the appointment date
• High school graduate or G.E.D., (as recognized by the U.S. Department of Education)
• U.S. citizen or a permanent resident alien who is eligible and has applied for citizenship

Out-of-State Candidates:

The California Commission on Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST) will conduct an evaluation of all out-of-state training. POST is the sole authority on applicable training and determines whether the candidate must attend an abbreviated academy, or a regular police academy. If an academy is required, the candidate will be hired as a Police Officer Trainee. Upon completion of the academy, promotion will be made to Police Officer.

Selection Process:

All qualified applicants will be invited to appear before an Oral Appraisal Board. Applicants passing the Oral Board examination will be placed on the eligibility list based on their Oral Appraisal Board rankings. Prospective employees will be required to pass a physical agility examination and undergo a thorough background investigation including a medical, psychological, polygraph and drug/alcohol screening.

Phase I Includes:

• 99 Yard Obstacle Course (time limit 25 seconds)
• Body Drag (165 pounds) (time limit 14 seconds)
• Chain Link Fence (time limit 10 seconds)
• Solid Fence (time limit 13.5 seconds)
• One Mile Run (time limit 10 minutes)

Phase II: For candidates progressing to the Chief’s Oral Interview process

• 1.5 Mile Run (time limit 15 minutes)
• 15 Military Style Push-ups without stopping

The Police Officer Trainee position is the entry-level role for those who have not yet attended the Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certified academy.

Starting salary for trainees is $30.68 per hour while attending the academy, plus excellent benefits.

The Novato Sanitary District is seeking a highly motivated, and goal-driven individual to join our Collection System team as a Collection System Worker (CSW). The District will hire at the level of CSW I or CSW II depending on skills, certifications and licenses held by candidates in the pool of qualified applicants. 

The CSW performs a wide variety of tasks associated with the maintenance of wastewater collection and reclamation systems, including inspection, cleaning, maintenance, and repairs on lines, pump stations, and treatment facilities. The successful CSW I candidate will possess experience in general maintenance tasks, including the safe and effective operation of a variety of hand and power tools and equipment. Possession of a commercial driver's license is highly desirable. Experience working with sewer cleaning trucks and equipment is also a plus. The successful CSW II candidate will have three or more years of experience in collection system maintenance. Experience in pump station maintenance is highly desirable.
