What You'll Do

Key Responsibilities

• Inspect public works and capital projects – including streets, storm drains, sidewalks, grading, and related infrastructure – for compliance with plans, specifications, codes, and safety standards
• Review construction plans, specifications, and permit applications
• Administer encroachment and transportation permits from issuance through closeout
• Prepare daily inspection reports and maintain project documentation, including support for payments and change orders
• Guide contractors on proper construction methods, materials, and standards
• Oversee field testing for soils, asphalt, and concrete
• Perform survey work and assist with traffic engineering studies
• Investigate resident concerns and coordinate solutions with contractors and City staff
• Serve as a liaison among the City, contractors, utilities, businesses, and property owners
• Support interns and assist with training related to permit processing
• Perform light maintenance tasks such as traffic signal timing adjustments

The City of Newark is seeking an Urban Forest Supervisor for the Public Works Department. The Urban Forest Supervisor leads the City’s forestry and landscape maintenance programs. This role blends strategic planning, technical expertise in tree health, and hands-on project management to ensure a safe and well-maintained urban environment.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES

• Participates in the preparation of the operating budget for the landscape and tree program; participates in the forecasting of additional funds needed for materials and supplies and gathers cost estimates as directed. 
• Provides skilled and technical direction on care, maintenance, disease prevention, and removal of trees; plans inspection and maintenance of all trees in appropriate cycles; assigns priorities and special projects as needed.  
• Inspects work sites before, during and after completion of work to assure that required work is completed in a satisfactory and thorough manner; inspects work sites, equipment and tools for compliance with safety standards; and inspects and approves work done by outside contractors. 

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

Any combination of education and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:

• Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent, and four (4) years of increasingly responsible experience in landscape and tree maintenance, including two (2) years of lead responsibility or other qualifying higher level public works maintenance experience.

This position oversees the work of the Building Division, inclusive of managing permit technicians, plan checkers, building inspectors, and support staff, they are responsible for enforcing the adopted building codes as well as ensuring construction projects comply with federal and state laws and ordinances. • Maintains close coordination between various City departments for the plan check and building inspection functions.

Education: Equivalent to a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university with major work in structural, mechanical, or civil engineering, architecture, or a closely related field. 

License: Possession and maintenance of a valid Class C California Driver's License. Possession of Certification as Building Official by International Code Council (ICC) is required within one (1) year of appointment. Possession of a Certificate of Registration as a professional engineer in the State of California is desirable.  

OTHER REQUIREMENTS 
Essential duties require the mental and/or physical ability to: work in a standard office environment and use standard office equipment and current software; safely drive to various locations throughout the City and County to manage, direct, coordinate and/or participate in meetings and community events in a variety of community settings and weather conditions; make effective presentations to public audiences; perform building inspections in the field on an infrequent, as-needed basis; conduct City business during day and evening hours, including occasional weekend and irregular hours; grasp, perform repetitive hand movements and fine coordination to prepare documents and data using a computer keyboard and mouse/trackball; sit for prolonged periods of time; stand, walk, reach, bend and safely lift and move equipment and materials weighing up to 35 pounds; converse by telephone, by email, in person, and before small and large groups, and be clearly understood; read and comprehend legal, technical and complex documents; interact with the public and all different levels of City staff in an effective and professional manner. PAL (Police Activities League) Program Attendants work in the formal Suisun City classification of Recreation Specialist I. Starting hourly rate will depend on qualifications. This position works on average 19 hours per week.

The Department: The Recreation, Parks and Marina Department is responsible for the operations and programs of the Suisun City Marina, the Senior Center and the Joseph A. Nelson Center, including preschool, after-school programs at various sites, recreation classes and sports leagues, community events and special event rentals.

The Position: PAL Program Attendants work with Suisun City’s PAL Program and with area teenagers ages 13-19 to implement educational and recreational activities: tutoring, sports, games, mini-excursions, competitions, contests, seminars, and special events, and provide general support to the program’s Recreation Supervisor. The City of Berkeley invites you to apply for the position of Mechanic in the Public Works Department! In this role, you will have the opportunity to work on a variety of equipment including heavy and light trucks, construction equipment, automobiles, other vehicles, and small gasoline engines. The City maintains over 550 vehicles. You will operate a variety of hand, power and shop tools in order to perform maintenance, repairs and overhauls. There are two Equipment Maintenance Shops – one focusing on smaller light duty vehicles and the other focusing on heavy duty vehicles including refuse and recycling trucks.

The Department of Public Works has over 300 employees. In this role, you will work primarily with other Mechanics, Service Technicians, a Lead Mechanic, an Equipment Parts Technician, and administrative and management staff. The Equipment Maintenance Division launched a new asset management software system last year to better manage inventory and repairs.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

A typical way of gaining the knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position is:

Equivalent to graduation from high school and three (3) years experience at a journey level in the maintenance and repair of vehicles or heavy construction equipment. Course completion in appropriate trade school or technical coursework in electric, diesel, or gasoline powered mechanics leading to journey certification can be substituted for up to one (1) year of the required experience.

Other requirements include possession of a valid California driver’s license and a satisfactory driving record. Must possess a valid class "B" California driver's license with no air brakes restriction, Smog Check Inspector license, and Smog Check Repair Technician license before completing probationary period. ASE Certifications are preferred. A class "A" driver's license is desirable.

The General Maintenance Worker plays a vital role in keeping our communities and centers clean, safe, and visually appealing. This position focuses on a specific set of tasks tailored to meet the needs of the Recreation & Community Services Department, differing from the broader responsibilities of a full General Maintenance Worker under the Public Works Department. The Recreation Coordinator or Recreation and Community Services Supervisor is the key point of contact for this position, providing general direction and/or supervision.

1. Field Preparation: Assist t with basic field preparation for baseball and softball, including tasks like dragging the infield play area, marking chalk lines, and other essential setup activities.
    
2. Groundskeeping: Support keeping the exterior areas of community centers clean and presentable by removing trash and maintaining general tidiness. Assist with watering and care of indoor plants within recreation centers as needed.
    
3. Facility Cleaning: Perform light janitorial duties, including cleaning restrooms, fitness centers, and lobbies.
    
4. Events & Equipment Support: Assist with event setup and teardown once events are completed. Maintain special event equipment, furniture and supplies and promptly report any damaged or broken items to a supervisor for replacement.

The Human Services Department (HSD) delivers and supports services by forging long-term community partnerships, engaging with and building the capacity of the community to do its own problem-solving, and leveraging financial and volunteer resources.

The Position

The Program Coordinator will provide supervision and oversight of the Fremont Family Resource Center (FRC) Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA). In addition, this position will be responsible for overall FRC communications, marketing, and event planning. This position will be required to work a varied work schedule which will include weekdays, evenings, and Saturdays.

Examples of Job Duties

• VITA program design and implementation. Duties include, but not limited to:
  • Ensure VITA site compliance as outlined by the IRS.
  • Manage and update calendaring system.
  • Manage day-to-day operations of VITA site(s) to include set-up (moving furniture, setting up laptops and printers, preparing food, clean-up, and washing dishes). Must have the ability to lift up to 50 pounds with help from other staff.
  • Meet with VITA coaches to develop, coordinate, and deliver training curriculum.
  • Maintain program documentation and write reports.
  • Recruit volunteers and attend county-wide meetings as appropriate.
• Serve as marketing, communication, and service integration lead for the Fremont Family Resource Center. Must be comfortable with public speaking, creating and delivering presentations.
• Plan, coordinate, and implement the Fremont Family Resource Center annual Day Away Conference and other FRC events.
