THE POSITION:

This can be a stressful and demanding job located within the Police Department requiring shift work, weekend and holiday duty.  Although hours vary, this is an on-call, as-needed position that is paid hourly.  Using RIMS (Records Information Management System), per diem dispatchers dispatch police and transfer calls to Fire & EMS under emergency conditions; receive residential alarm calls and take calls of an emergency and non-emergency nature from citizens; greets public and assists at the front counter.  Dispatchers must remain calm and tactful under trying conditions, remembering detailed information, and thinking clearly while performing several tasks at once.

To maintain familiarity with the Atherton Police Dispatch Center, we can offer guaranteed 16 hours of shifts spread over a few days per month. You'll provide break relief while also getting a chance to work with another dispatcher. Since we may not always have many shifts available, expectations would be that you would also assist with open shifts/sick calls as needed and not just rely on the 16 hours.

Qualifications

DEFINITION

Under direct supervision, performs a variety of manual, semi-skilled and skilled tasks in the construction, maintenance, repair and operation of the City’s streets, sidewalks, signs, sewers, storm drains, pump stations, parks, tot lots, medians, gardens, irrigation systems or municipal buildings. Tasks often require considerable physical strength and stamina and may be performed in inclement weather and/or potentially hazardous conditions. CLASSIFICATION CHARACTERISTICS

Utility Maintenance Worker is the entry level to the following classification series: Building Maintenance Worker I/II, Collection System Maintenance Worker I/II, Groundskeeper/Gardener I/II, Street Maintenance Worker I/II, and Water Maintenance Worker I/II. Candidates from the Utility Maintenance Worker Employment List may be appointed in any one of several City departments. They will initially be under close supervision, performing the least skilled and most repetitive tasks while learning to use and apply the methods, materials, tools and equipment involved. Incumbents normally advance to Level II after at least two years of successful experience and demonstrating proficiency for the Level II work.

Position Summary
