Depending on the City’s operational needs as well as your skillset and experience, the City could adjust the responsibilities of the Deputy Directors within the Public Works Department.

What You’ll Do

The Deputy Director of Public Works is responsible for directing and managing all programs within the Divisions for which they are responsible. This may include capital improvement program development and implementation, traffic engineering, private development review, regulatory compliance, solid waste management, operations and maintenance, asset and data management, construction management, fleet coordination, downtown coordination, and building maintenance; and the position may serve as the City Engineer and/or the Director of Public Works in their absence.

ABOUT THE POSITION

Under the direction of the Custodial Services Supervisor, the Maintenance Custodian serves as the worker in the duties of care and cleaning of assigned buildings and related facilities.  The incumbent will be required to travel between several City buildings during their scheduled shift. Custodial services are provided seven days a week with shifts starting at 5pm and ending at 1:30am. Please note that schedules for this role could vary Monday-Sunday and will be determined prior to appointment.

Typical duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

• Sweep, vacuum, shampoo, and mop
• Dust fixtures and equipment up to twelve feet from floor.
• Wash windows and doors up to twelve feet from floor.
• Clean desk and countertops if cleared of items.
• Empty and clean waste receptacles, place in appropriate outside bins. Move recycle bins in and out of assigned buildings as assigned.
• Clean and maintain restrooms in assigned buildings and facilities.
• Replace light bulbs up to twelve feet from floor.
• Lock and unlock doors; turn light and machines on and off; set alarms.
• Pick up papers and other debris and place in appropriate container.
• Operate light duty equipment and machinery.
• Maintain effective communication utilizing email and phone during each assigned shift.
• Perform related duties as assigned.

What You’ll Do

The Assistant Planner/Associate Planner performs professional level work in the field of current planning and/or advance planning to promote the City’s Mission and Values. The current vacancy may be filled at either level based on experience.

Assistant Planner - is the entry level class in the professional planning series and is distinguished from the Associate Planner by the performance of less complex tasks and duties in the fields of current or advance planning, which require the application of fundamental planning principles. Assignments are generally limited in scope and within the design and procedural framework established by higher level employees. However, as experience is acquired, the employee performs with increasing independence. Since this class is typically used as a continued training class, employees may have only limited work experience.

Associate Planner - is the journey level class in the professional planning series and employees within this class are distinguished from the Assistant Planner by the performance of the full range of duties as assigned, which require the application of professional knowledge and skills to various municipal planning, zoning, and environmental problems and the preparation of specific reports and plans. The position provides opportunity for independent judgment in planning work details and making technical determinations. Work in this class is distinguished from that of Assistant Planner by the greater complexity of assignments including preparing zoning code and general plan amendment studies, and by the greater independence with which the incumbent is expected to operate. Employees at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise, and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit. Positions in this class are flexibly staffed and are normally filled by advancement from the lower class of Assistant Planner or, when filled from the outside, require prior professional planning work experience.

The Assistant Planner receives general supervision from a Senior Planner or higher level department personnel. The Associate Planner receives direction from a Senior Planner or higher level department personnel and may exercise technical and functional supervision over lower level staff as assigned.

The City of Belmont Public Works Department is recruiting for the position of Mechanic.

The City’s Mechanic position is responsible for maintaining, servicing, and repairing all City-owned vehicles and light and heavy equipment; troubleshooting and diagnosing vehicle malfunctions; performing preventive maintenance on vehicles and equipment; and performing a variety of tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility.  The Mechanic receives general supervision from the Senior Mechanic.

DESCRIPTION:

The City of Santa Clara is seeking to fill multiple Principal Engineer positions to perform high-level civil engineering tasks to manage and support capital improvement projects. Projects can range across water, sewer, storm systems, public-right-of-way infrastructure, transportation infrastructure planning and implementation, parks and recreation facilities, and other city-owned infrastructure. Under direct supervision of the Department Director or Assistant Director, the Principal Engineer will work independently as a hands-on contributor to the engineering team’s work and will be in charge of engineering, construction, maintenance, and related activities. Principal Engineers may also have responsibility for the quality and quantity of the work of an engineering unit, as well as other supervisory duties, as distinguished from the lower level of Engineering classifications.  

 

Water and Sewer Utilities Department

The Water and Sewer Utilities Department plans, designs, constructs, maintains, and operates the City’s water distribution system, sewer collection system, and recycled water system. These three utilities operate independently and charge rates to recover the costs of providing these services to Santa Clara residents and businesses, including capital investment in City infrastructure and funding needed for adequate reserves.

In 2023, the Water Utility produced and distributed approximately six billion gallons of water to approximately 26,000 service connections, delivered through approximately 335 miles of water main. Of the total potable water supply, 62% is obtained from City wells, 18% and 20% treated surface water is provided by wholesalers Valley Water and San Francisco Public Utilities Commission respective.  Recycled water delivered through the South Bay Water Recycling system makes up 20% of the total water supply in the City. 

The Sewer Utility operates and maintains 270 miles of a sanitary sewage collection system that collects and conveys wastewater to the San Jose-Santa Clara Regional Wastewater Facility (RWF) for treatment and disposal. Santa Clara is a 20% owner in the RWF with the City of San Jose owning 80% of the facility.  The Sewer Utility maintains 7 sewer pump stations, assists the Department of Public Works in the operation and maintenance of 22 storm pump stations, and performs other critical services. The Principal Engineer will be responsible for staff supervision, budget preparation and monitoring, project oversight, consultant and contractor management and administration, project database oversight, community outreach, project programming and reporting, presentations at the City committees, commissions, and Council, staff mentoring and training and assuring all projects are being implemented and constructed in accordance with plans, specifications, and standards. The qualified candidate will have experience both supervising and working in a team environment on major construction projects, including working collaboratively with contractors, technicians, utility operations staff, outside agency staff, and the public.

 

 

Department of Public Works

Minimum Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree in engineering or closely related field, and Four (4) years of increasingly responsible experience in engineering office and field work, two years of which shall have included supervision of professional and paraprofessional staff.

License/Certifications: 

• Registration as a Civil Engineer by the California State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers is required.
• A Water Distribution Operator's Certification (Grade D-3) must be obtained within two years of appointment. 
• Pipeline Assessment and Certification Program (PACP) certification must be obtained from National Association of Sewer Service Companies (NASCO) within one year of appointment.
• Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license is required at the time of application and for the duration of employment.

Desirable Qualifications: 

• A Water Distribution Operator's Certification of Grade D-4 or higher is highly desirable.
• A Collection System Operations and Maintenance Certification (Grade 2 or higher) is highly desirable.

Education and experience equivalent to a Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering from a college or university that is accredited by the Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology; and

The Department:

The mission of the Finance Department is to ensure that the financial/fiscal activities of the City, its Agencies and Corporations are performed, recorded and presented in compliance with professional and ethical standards. The Finance Department administers the financial affairs of the City, including City-owned public utilities. These functions include: budget administration and control; maintaining a general accounting system and the preparation of comprehensive annual financial reports; collection of taxes, fees, special assessments and utility charges; investment of City funds; procurement of supplies, materials, equipment, and services; operating the City Warehouse; issuance of bonds and debt management; internal auditing; and financial management of contracts, including leases.

The Accounting Division resides in the City's Finance Department and is responsible for providing relevant, accurate, and timely transaction processing and financial reporting services for the City. 

The Position:

This is a paraprofessional position in the classified service and is distinguished from the next lower level of Accounting Technician II in that positions at this level require the frequent use of a high degree of independent judgment and interpretative ability related to a technical knowledge of accounting, computer applications, on-line financial systems, and applicable laws and regulations. While a Senior Accounting Technician can perform work in all areas of the Accounting Division, the current recruitment is within the Accounts Payable section. Incumbents in this class use computer applications on a daily basis in accomplishing their work. Incumbents in this class are expected to supervise and provide technical guidance to staff.

The Department: 

The Purchasing Division resides in the City's Finance Department and maintains a "centralized purchasing system" that is responsible for all purchasing and contracting activity for supplies, materials, and equipment as well as general and professional services.  The Division also operates a Central Warehouse, with over 3,000 inventory items primarily to support the City's utility departments (Silicon Valley Power and the Water and Sewer Departments). The Division is also responsible for the disposition of surplus property and the City mailroom.

The Division will soon expand its warehouse operations with the opening of a second warehouse to support Silicon Valley Power’s infrastructure projects. This recruitment is to fill the Chief Storekeeper position that will manage operations at the current central warehouse, as the incumbent Chief Storekeeper will be transitioning over to the new warehouse.

The Position: 

The Chief Storekeeper is a classified position responsible for overseeing day-to-day warehouse operations, including:

• Oversee a wide variety of materials, supplies, and related equipment 
• Receiving, storing, and issuing supplies, tools, and equipment 
• Ensuring accurate inventory tracking and efficient material handling
• Providing direction to departments for orders of materials
• Supervising a team consisting of two Material Handlers and one Senior Materials Handler in the efficient requisition and issue of materials and supplies
• Obtaining quotes, preparing requisitions, and entering purchase orders in PeopleSoft in accordance with the City’s purchasing policies and guidelines.

The ideal candidate will have strong supervisory, communication, and organizational skills to ensure efficient, consistent, and service-oriented warehouse operations.

The annual salary range for this position is $110,602.20 - $141,461.52. This position may be filled at or near the minimum of the salary range. 

Minimum Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Minimum Qualifications:
 • Graduation from high school or possession of a GED
 • Three (3) years of experience in storekeeping, warehousing or inventory control, at least one (1) year of which shall have been in a supervisory or lead capacity
 
Desirable Qualifications:
 • Graduation from an accredited college or university with an Associate or Bachelor's Degree in Business, Public Administration, Finance or related field is highly desirable
 
LICENSE
 Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license is required at time of appointment and for the duration of employment.
 
OTHER REQUIREMENTS

Are you looking for an exciting new opportunity to work every day in a well-established preschool?  The City of Belmont is recruiting for a Full-Time Head Teacher who will lead and provide a safe, enriching, and challenging learning environment for children aged 2-5 years old at our licensed preschool program, the Belmont Community Learning Center.  

In this full-time role, you’ll be the lead for our 2–3-year-old classroom, helping our youngest learners grow through play, learning, and exploration. You’ll create a safe and engaging space, support toilet training and diapering, and build meaningful connections with children and families. Depending on program needs, your work hours will be either 7:30 AM–4:30 PM or 9:00 AM–6:00 PM.
