Minimum Qualifications for consideration: Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Education/Training: Equivalent to graduation from an accredited U.S. high school; passing score on the General Education Development (GED) test; or possession of a two-year, four-year, or advanced degree from an accredited college or university. College course work in police science, criminal justice, or a related field is desirable.

Experience: Completion of a P.O.S.T.-certified training academy.

License or Certificate: Possession of a valid California Class C driver license with an acceptable driving record. Possession of a California Basic P.O.S.T. certificate within one year of employment.

Special Requirements: Must be 21 years of age as of the date of hire. Must be a United States citizen or meet citizenship requirements. Must be of good moral character with no felony convictions.

The Police Officer Trainee position is the entry-level role for those who have not yet attended the Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certified academy.

The academy lasts six months and is the first step in your law enforcement career. Upon successful completion, officers perform a variety of law enforcement duties to protect life and property in accordance with applicable laws.

Starting salary for trainees is $30.68 per hour while attending the academy, plus excellent benefits.

After successfully completing the Police Academy, trainees are promoted to Police Officer with a salary increase to $35.06 per hour. Officers also receive additional pay incentives such as educational pay and POST Intermediate or Advanced Certification pay. There are many opportunities for advancement.

• Upon passing a written examination, candidates will be contacted through email to complete a Personal History Questionnaire (PHQ). 
• Candidates who complete PHQ's in an appropriate and timely manner will be invited for an oral interview with Background Detectives and placed on an eligibility list based on interview ranking.
• Top Candidates will undergo a thorough background investigation including a medical, psychological, polygraph, and drug/alcohol screening.
• A Physical Agility testing will include:
  • One Mile Run (time limit 10 minutes).
  • Solid Fence (time limit 13.5 seconds).
  • Chain Link Fence (time limit 10 seconds).
  • Body Drag (165 pounds) (time limit 14 seconds).
  • 99 Yard Obstacle Course (time limit 25 seconds).
• Chief's Final Oral Interview.

THE POSITION:

The Newark Police Department is a modern, progressive law enforcement agency with 59 sworn and 27 professional staff employees.  The Newark Police Department values and rewards prior police experience.  Well qualified lateral officers have enjoyed specialty assignments and promotions based upon total law enforcement experience. For well qualified officers, the Newark Police Department offers accelerated hiring and training programs, as well as numerous lateral entry incentives.  Our program is designed to recognize and reward your skills and experience, to include: $2500 academy reimbursement and $2500 for moving expenses. Well qualified laterals may be appointed to top salary range, and may transfer 120 hours of vacation and 100 hours of sick leave to Newark upon hire.

Numerous specialty assignments, most with premium pay incentives, to include: Detectives, Field Training Officer (FTO), Crisis Negotiation Team (CNT), Traffic Division, School Resource Officers (SRO), Major Crimes Task Force, K-9, S.W.A.T.
