This is for individuals that have no prior law enforcement experience and have not received POST certified police academy training. Trainees are paid while attending a POST-certified Police Academy. The Fellow will assess current storage and inventory practices and help implement a more efficient, organized system. Responsibilities may include developing labeling structures, organizing storage areas, establishing inventory tracking procedures, and improving material accessibility for staff. In collaboration with Service Center personnel, the Fellow will identify opportunities to enhance efficiency, organization, and accountability.

This fellowship offers practical experience in warehouse logistics, operational system design, and cross-functional collaboration, while building skills in organization, problem-solving, and process improvement within a public sector setting.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

The successful candidate will demonstrate strong problem-solving skills, a willingness to learn new systems, and the ability to think critically about processes. Interest in organization, data tracking, or hands-on operational work such as inventory or warehouse systems is desirable. Experience with spreadsheets or data entry is helpful but not required.

THE POSITION OBJECTIVES/GOALS

1. Accurately assess and document current inventory of parts and materials within the WJUSD Service Center, including storage locations, item categories, and current organizational practices.

2. Review existing storage systems to identify inefficiencies, inconsistencies, or gaps, and coordinate with Service Center, Maintenance, and Transportation staff to improve organization.

3. Develop and implement a standardized organizational structure for parts and materials, including clear storage locations, labeling practices, and logical grouping of inventory.

4. Improve inventory accessibility and efficiency by helping establish procedures that allow staff to quickly locate, store, and track commonly used materials.

5. Create simple documentation and reference materials to support consistent inventory organization practices, including basic procedures for storing and locating materials.

The Department

The Public Works Department is comprised of the Engineering and Facilities Services Division (EFSD) and the Environmental Services Division (ESD). Each division is led by a Deputy Director reporting to the Director of Public Works. The department is responsible for the City’s major capital projects and infrastructure including streets, street lights, traffic signals, sewer and storm conveyance systems, wastewater treatment plant, pump stations, a major lagoon, and dams and levees. The Position

The Traffic and Lighting Technician performs skilled electrical and mechanical work in the maintenance and repair of traffic control signage, traffic signal equipment, and street lights; and guides the work of and trains other maintenance personnel, and performs related work as required.  Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Guide and participate in the work of other maintenance personnel.  Ability to set-up work zone safety and prepare traffic control work plans.
• Inspect, install, remove, and repair signal controls and auxiliary equipment such as light standards, control boxes, light fixtures, lamps, and circuitry; diagnose malfunctions; adjust and replace electronic and mechanical components.
• Inspect, install, remove and repair street lights and auxiliary equipment.
• Repair, replace or modify electric and electronic components, controllers, relays, switches, fuses, timers and other parts; design and construct special test equipment for shop testing of electronic components.
• Investigate complaints and reports of signal and traffic light malfunctions; adjust, repair or remove defective equipment; make field repairs of damaged equipment.
• Identify, locate and indicate with appropriate identification markers underground utilities (USA); respond to USA work orders within regulatory requirements; and document services accordingly.
• Be available for standby assignments in accordance with Department policies and procedures.
• Assist in the design of electrical circuits and systems for street lighting and traffic signals.
• Inspect the work of contractors during the course of construction and upon completion.
• Monitor traffic control computer and make adjustments as necessary.

The Traffic and Lighting Technician receives general direction from the Field Maintenance Manager and direct supervision from a Public Works Supervisor or higher level department staff and may exercise technical or functional direction over and provide work review to a Traffic Safety Worker or Maintenance Worker I/II.

Job Description:  

The City Manager’s Office has a full-time, 40 hours per week, non-benefited summer internship opportunity. The main function of the job is to perform municipal research and analytical work on an entry-level professional basis.

 

The workload will be a balance of assisting in daily municipal operations and special projects. PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The City of Woodland is seeking a motivated, resourceful self-starter to join the Community Development Planning team in a dynamic fellowship role that bridges municipal planning and historic preservation. This position offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in core planning functions while contributing meaningfully to the preservation and celebration of the City’s historic character.

In this role, the Fellow will serve as a key point of contact for residents, property owners, and community stakeholders seeking information on general planning inquiries, zoning standards, and land use regulations. The position provides practical exposure to municipal planning processes, including development review, interpretation of zoning codes, and customer service within a public-sector framework.

A central component of the fellowship will be leading a comprehensive revamp of the City’s historic preservation education and outreach efforts. This includes researching and developing accessible educational materials, enhancing digital resources, and expanding community awareness of preservation programs and incentives. The Fellow will gain experience working with state and federal historic preservation documentation requirements and processes, strengthening their understanding of regulatory compliance and cultural resource management.

Applicants should be a current student or recent graduate in Urban Planning, History, Public Administration, Architecture, or a closely related field. This individual is comfortable conducting technical research and collecting data to inform planning initiatives, policy analysis, and outreach efforts. THE POSITION OBJECTIVES/GOALS

The primary goal of this fellowship is to provide hands-on experience in the daily operations of a municipal planning office, preparing participants for expanded career opportunities in urban planning, historic preservation, and community development. Key objectives include:

1. Public Engagement: Serve as a front-line resource at the Planning Counter, providing clear, professional guidance to residents, property owners, and developers on zoning, land use, and permit inquiries.
    
2. Inquiry Management: Respond to phone and email inquiries regarding City codes, permitting processes, and planning regulations, ensuring accurate and timely information.
    
3. Technical Research: Conduct site-specific research, data collection, and documentation to support historic preservation projects and planning initiatives.
    
4. Heritage Home Awards: Assist with the planning, nomination review, coordination, and promotion of the City’s annual Heritage Home Awards program.
    
5. Website Revamp: Audit, update, and redesign the Historic Preservation section of the City’s website to create a comprehensive, user-friendly educational hub for homeowners and the community.
    
6. Interactive Story Map: Develop an engaging Historic Resource Story Map using GIS tools, featuring photos, architectural descriptions, and cultural context to enhance public understanding of Woodland’s landmark sites.
    
7. Historical Resource Development: Create and curate downloadable resources—including preservation guidelines, tax credit information, and step-by-step educational content—to support property owners in restoring and maintaining historic properties.

Working closely with Public Works and Finance staff, the Fellow will help develop streamlined data management processes within the RTA fleet management software, improving operational efficiency and reporting accuracy.

The ideal candidate communicates clearly and professionally, both verbally and in writing, and thrives in a collaborative environment, working closely with Finance and Public Works staff. • Organizing and tracking inspection reports, testing results, invoices, and other construction documentation
